This freeway, and the 427, are HUGE. They built he ETR 407 tollway "to take the strain off the 401", but instead IT too is handling about 300,000 vehicles/day, even with a toll...
I hate to say it, but driving here in Canada or anywhere on the 401 is a joke, compared to driving overseas in Europe. Give me a break, 100 kph on the 401?? How much slower can we drive here in Canada?? In Europe they move people both by road and rail 2 to 3 times faster, than we do here in North America. How are we supposed to compete with that on a global economic basis?? Wake up Canada, the rest of the world is travelling much faster than you are.
It wont be a joke after you witness how busy the 401 can get. How can you drive fast in the busiest highway in the world with a vast amount of cars driving in 28 lanes including shoulders?
"It won't be a joke after you witness how busy the 401 can get"
Trust me, I have seen it plenty of times 28 lanes wide at a stand still. It's a joke of a highway system here in Ontario, Canada.
Why?? There's just one major highway connecting Ontario from east to west, Highway 401.
Go to Europe (try the Autobahn) if you want to see highway transportation in motion and when you're there, try out the public transportation system in Berlin.
Well your comparing to a transportation system that has no speed limit. Of course your going to see people drive really fast. The speed limit on the 401 ia 100km...but almost everyone goes between 120 to 140km. My question is how is the 401 a joke? Just because theres a speed limit?
Oh and I wouldnt be surprised if someone gets killed on the Berlin roads...smashing the car headon the concrete going at 220 km.
Hummm, did you know that Ontario, Canada has virtually the slowest speed limit on it's freeway system of the entire developed world.
Even Pakistan has higher speed limits on their roads and they drive faster. LOL
Slightly embarrassing I would say.
Hwy 401 is a dog of slow highway.
Btw, the Autobahn has less than 1/2 of the fatalities mile per mile, vehicle per vehicle, person per person than we do here in Canada. Please check the facts.
@EinSturm Just because its faster...its better? Your determination is the fastest is the best. Thats just your perspective. Everywhere pretty much in North America speed limit is 65m or 100km...110 if your on the countryside.
I would say 100km is slow yes..but almost everyone drives between 120 to 140km.
If you drive 120 kph on the 401, you really are risking a ticket. Without a question, 140 kph will get you a ticket on the 401 in this part of Ontario where I live.
Footnote:
Hummm, well it's a global economy now. If you're not better (as in quality), faster or cheaper, you're not going to compete.
Europe is faster and better in many cases, while Asia does it cheaper.
Please feel free to visit my U-tube channel and see how the Europeans drive (doing it faster and better).
QEinsturm...buddy I live in Toronto, I driven on the 401 for over 3 years now and I go at 130k and pretty much everyone else does as well....Your only going to get ticketed if you go beyond 140km. Oh and what does speed have to do with the economy?
130 kph west of Toronto gets you a ticket here. The OPP here are beyond the word "strict" and they are quite nasty when they pull you over in these parts.
Actually the OPP here need to learn a few pointers when dealing with the general public.
"What does speed have to do with the economy?" Time is money for most business. Therefore if business can do it faster, they make more money and they can also save you money by getting the work done faster with lower total labor costs for a project.
That section shown is 10 lanes, they didn't have enough right of way to build a local-express setup. If they want to build express lanes there and widen it, they'd either have to expropriate many houses and businesses or double-deck the highway above the current lanes.
most of the time the highway is divided into 4 sections, 2 eastbound and 2 westbound. the outter section for local traffic (off ramps to roads every mile or so) is called the collectors, and usually has between 4 and 5 lanes in it. the inner section, express, connects to the collectors every 5 miles. it has about 4 or 5 lanes aswell.
@gorgydan what do you mean? If you mean Canada doesn't need those many lanes, then think again because over half a million cars pass through some parts of the 401 daily.
@gorgydan: each direction is divided into "express" and "collectors'" lanes...the inside lanes are express lanes used for those driving through toronto without exiting...the collectors lanes are the outer set of lanes used for local drivers...
what do you expect in a country of 3 people per sq km. everything is huge and wide here. an american exclaimed seeing the canadian closet - omg this is the size of my bedroom.
Actually, Toronto is one of the densist populated towns in the world. Traffic is dead stopped, every time I go. Average communte in here in Montreal is the longest in North_America and we have half the pop. of TO.
Citymayors statistics says Toronto is at position 97 with a density of 2650. Top spot is Mumbai with 29,650. Please thank God that at least you can drive in Toronto ! In Mumbai you will have time only to curse !
Hehe you couldn't be more wrong - Highway 401 (the one in this video) is usually completely jammed, and is the busiest in North America, even though it is also one of the widest in the world. This is indeed uncharacteristically low traffic :)
