  • It is very similar to the "lemon song" which itself is a rip-off from a early blues standard called "killing floor"recorded a decade or more before Zep "sampled/borrowed"it.

Zeps first album was comprised of mostly"re-worked"blues standards which is how they managed to go out or tour without even having a album or a released single as of yet, they just did alot of Yardbirds stuff from before and after the Jimmy Page era. I being a HUGE Zep fan was a little put-off at first but it faded fast.

  • A list price of over $5,000 is absurd for this instrument. I built one with all factory Fender USA parts, electronics and a nitro finish for less than $800 including a new tweed G&G case and final setup by one of the best luthiers in the country.

  • That bass sounds incredible. Great playing, man.

  • Hey Fender, here's an idea, Make all your P basses this way, offer a variety of colors and pickguard options, and sell em for about $1800. C'mon, whatdayya say???

  • @herrdruhl You can put one together using all OEM Fender USA parts for about half that all day long.

  • FONKY!!!

  • nice sound

  • nice bass and nice playing

  • beautiful bass and very nice sound...also well played XD

  • i am a huge palladino fan im 37 so i got to hear him with paul young and don henly and all that, i actually own a stingray fretless because of him. When i see this bass it does nothing for me..he didnt make his name on a P bass anyway..and to pay all that money for this thing when you could get the dimensions and find the parts and make it yourself..it just seems ridiculous for a p bass this price..i love the guy ALOT what he did with paul young helped make me into the player i am today.

  • a suckers bass for that price.

  • We got ourselves a regular old JPJ

  • ey but the squier precision bass is another sound ¿?

  • Ebony fretboard?

  • @clocke55

Btw i know a Squier ain't a Fender but still

there is a Squier 60's precision bass in fiesta red

(i sold that one last week to a pino palladino fan here in toronto)

i thought i let you know

  • @Thommislav yeah i was looking at that bass but i wanted a fender. so i ended getting the 'Fender Precision Bass in Candy Apple Red' the difference between a Fender and a Fender Squires THE FEEL! sure it doesnt sound much different too each other but the feel of the Fender is just amazing!

  • enough about the bass... what about this awesome playing...

  • He's not Pino (nobody...) But it's the sound !

  • he's not Pino but it is his sound !

  • Oh my gosh.. I would die if i can get a fender bass. :'( i almost cry when i think of it

im a bass player. but fender bass here in the philippines is so expensive.. to all good hearts there can u send me some.. even scrap fender bass guitar. :'( please have mercy.. :'(

  • The Lemon Song - led zeppelin

  • what cap do they put in there? thats the key to Pino's tone. just the ordinary .047uf green chiclet? since Pino plays with the tone knob at 0, all the highs and some mids are filtered out through the cap

  • good groove , old school , I love it !

  • yea the bass is sweet......but that was a great cover of a GREAT bass line. CHEERS!!!!!!

  • Didn't JPJ play a Fender Jazz? Don't know about this recording in particular, but I'm almost certain that every time he played out with a Fender, it was a tobacco-burst Jazz. Later, he got something weird like an Alembic, possibly . . .

  • I purchased this bass for $1750 from a store that was going out of business. Turned around and sold it on eBay to a Brit for $3500. I owned if for about a month. Yes, nice bass, but certainly expensive.

  • This bass is rediculously expensive. An Amrican Standard P Bass would do the same job at a 1/4 of the price. At the price Fender puts on this bass, Pino Palldino should be obligate to come over to your house, cook you veal scalla[ini and set the bass up with a blind-fold on. Exact specifications? Whaaaaaaaaat! The guy cut his teeth on a fretless.

  • How much does this bass run?

  • you played this superbly.

  • Pino Palladino made a name for himself long before john mayer...i first heard him in 84 and 85...he did don henlys (sunset grill) which was beautiful and then in 85 he did paul youngs no parlez album which included to huge songs..(everytime you go away) and also (come back and stay for good this time) some people think jaco when it comes to fretless..for me it was pino

  • Comment removed

  • Great tone, but honestly, this bass is not worth the money.

  • yeah you coul throw this bass together rather cheaply...see i have a differnt perspective on pino all together..i recall him playing his musicman fretless alot with paul young and don henly in 84 85-ish..there is a vif of paul young at love aide (everytime you go away) and pino is playing the musicman...i think im going to go this direction as well..ive had a few musicman bongos and wish i still had one..im curious to hear your thoughts also so e-mail me

  • That bass sounds great! You really nailed the Lemon Song vibe and groove. Great job!! I love the sound of the bass with the flats!

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, great basslines! Love it! Thanks for sharing!

  • aww yes led zep! :]

  • Are there the famous dead spots on the neck with this model? On the G string, the C# or D#, maybe the C or D? Please tell me!

  • Guess Pino bass was a 1964 precision....

  • great groove line baby!

  • love this song. love zeppelin, love pino

  • im pretty sure that pino does use the TI flats. either way, both la bella and TIs sound great! :P

  • Nice bass. It is interesting that Fender chose Thomastik's for this bass over LaBella. From what I've read, Pino uses LaBella's when using flat wounds strings.

  • I wanna ask you guys something should I trade my Fender 2006 Standard Jazz Bass in for a FleaBass or a Sterling by Musicman Bass?

  • Yup, absolutely, trade it fo Flea Bass

  • sterling stingray would be better

  • fleabass is terrible! go for a Sterling!!!

  • have you checked to see what the flea has inside such as preamp and pickup

  • Dude, are you talking about the Modulus or Flea's new bass? The modulus is a groove machine, but I'd get a warwick personally ;p

  • sorry for the late reply umm the modulus is what im refering too i played the new flea bass that he made and there not bad worth the money but i love my mod:)

  • Modulus basses are good and you get can some nice phat tone. Downsides as far as I'm concerned is that the bass is quite body heavy- for the same money you can get an equally weighted bass of the same standard. The other thing I'm not too sure about with modulus basses is their high end- it can end up sounding guitar like. For the same cash you can get basses that sound good all over the neck. I have a modulus and I'm selling it for those reasons. That said it still is a bloody good bass.

  • yea dude umm to be honest m five string flea is one of the lighted basses i have ever held it ballences nicely yea i get what your saying

  • in my opinion the string spacing is too large. I owned a 1997 flea bass

  • flea bass as in modulus, or the new ones?

  • Real nice woody tone very close to my '64 Very nice clean execution and timing.

  • Oh yeah the Thomastik-Infeld strings are awesome, I got a 62' Jazz RI that had those on it and they have the growl of a really good roundwound set, and the infamous tonality of a flatwound set. You can't beat them unless you go hard-core and got the Labella's, but i think you'll miss that growl.

    Sweet chops! Sweet Bass! Funky!!!!

  • I found the Thomastiks too light and floppy.

  • Just right for me. The perfect flatwound if ever there was one.

  • Great sound! I use flatwound strings in my bass, too, they help to get this kind of sound.

  • is it strung with flatwound strings?

i love precisions with flatwounds :D

  • Cool Led Zep bassline

  • damn man very impressive. Most of your awesome tone comes from the way your playing with you left hand. You're a really solid musician. Good stuff and beautiful bass...

  • Great tone, great playing. Thanks for sharing!

  • holy shittt sounds sooo sickk

  • dude thats nice. the sound is amazing. whats strings are you using?

  • Thomastik-Infeld Flatwounds (.043 .056 .070 .100)

  • does anyone know what song this dude is playing on this amazing bass if you dont mind me asking

  • sounds like some of the licks from The Lemon Song by Led Zeppelin

  • He's playing the Lemon Song by Led Zeppelin! Go listen to it. It's a blues bass masterpiece, much like all of Zeppelin's music which are masterpieces.

  • @archie91s jpj is a genius

  • @archie91s love lemon song.

  • Who said flatwounds have no "growl"?! ;-)

    Good job, mate!

  • Loving your Lemon Song :D

  • damm sound sooooooo great....what kind presicion pickup you use it??

  • I love the look, specs, and sound of this bass. Too bad it's a Custom Shop. Total b.s. If they just made it a normal artist series, I'd be more than willing to spend up to $1200 or so on it!

  • they've relic'ed it out with the aged plastic an faux rust crap on it.

i'd pay 1200 for a new artist series that wasn't though.

  • I like this vintage bass tone alot.

  • when i saw the who he never used this its worth 5000 yet he was using a black jaguare bass worth 650 odd dont you think

  • Yeah, I have a Jaguar! It's a bit more punchy and versatile than a P-bass, though I would give mine up any day for this one!

  • Haha its funny when you guys over the pond complain about how expensive gear is over there.

In England this bass costs about £2500 so about $5000!

  • Really nice playing! The low strings are a bit mushy -- I can only assume you still have the TIs. Any other brand of flats will sound better, IMHO, but won't have the ladies/childrens gauge/flex.

  • "ladies/childrens gauge/flex"

    ???

    Be more specific, please.

  • I meant they are so light, that a child or lady would be able to easily play them! I was just kidding around -- sorry :). Actually I find TI flats way way too light to play comfortably. Because they are so flexable/flimsy, they tend to mush up on the low notes, whereas a string like a La Bella flat, or a Fender flat will sound nice and tight down low. Still, you made them sound about as good as they can sound!

  • @bssprofundo I think the "ladies" gauge comments refers to the light gauge strings. However, remember these are Pino's choice. Can anyone argue with that?

  • @toddgakk ok Bass Masta... with your thick strings...fuckin child

  • was this bass worth 3000+ dollars?

  • I purchased it for $1800 from a music store that couldn't find a buyer ($3500, yikes) and after making this video sold it on ebay to a guy in the UK for $3000.

I've played many real vintage 60's P-basses which are listed well over $3000 and yes, this plays like or even better than those. These Custom Shop Pinos are amazing. The only condition (from my wife) was that I resell it for a profit at some point. I've financed all of my bass gear doing this.

  • So in your opinion, is there a better sounding production P Bass or is this it in terms of tone?

  • That must suck.

  • JPJ dude, Go zeppelin and Pino is rad

  • No. Thats past tone. Thats just... Pino.

  • that's tone.

  • word.

  • Nice work! Beautiful tone! One of my favorite songs as well.

  • Good Job , Mate.......

  • Cool...had to get the guitar out and play along. I always like the Lemon song.

  • This clip is just wonderful!!!!

Fantastic vintage tone, and great playing as well - I loved it!

  • Hey, thanks a lot. I miss that bass. I sold it to a guy in the UK to get another Jazz.

  • Great playing, nice sound. For those who have asked the p/u is a fender P-bass vintage series, same one they install on the 62 or 57 re-issues...not expensive or boutique. The striungs have alot to do w/ the tone...Thomastic Infeld Flatwound Jazz bass come stock on these. I use them on my 65 precision...serious tone. A good set-up and these strings on a 62 re-issue or vintage Precision will give u this sound if you know how to bring it out w/ your hands.

  • you shook me...

  • lemon song

  • i wanna see more of this bass! great playing.

  • what effects you use? echo? reply pls

  • The "THUMPER" setting on my Korg PX4D headphone amp has no effects but is EQed to bring out a lot of low end. It also digitally models a 1x15 cabinet (I think).

  • i have one of those Korg PX4Ds they are great for practise i didnt know that they worked this good for bass too!

  • your bass is a little bit to quiet

  • Does your computer have a sub-woofer? If not, try using headphones. The bass is very strong when I use either method from any machine.

  • Hey are you still looking 4 a band?

  • i love the lemon song, and pino rocks with the who, hes just a bit quiet

  • A bit quiet? when I saw his amp was turned up so high that when hit the low notes I could feel my organs rearraging.

great vid, love the sound of that bass.

  • i love the lemon song, and pino rocks with the who, hes just a bit quiet

  • Well done!

  • HAHAHA lemon song!

  • nice bass! and nice playin too man!

  • I totally agree

  • bssprofundo: Have you seen Pino with the Who on a Jag bass? I was lucky enough to see the Who on the Endless Wire Tour, with Pino, my no.2 fav bassist. I plan on seeing them next year if possible. Great playing, by the way.

  • I have not seen him with the Jag. Sounds pretty cool. Thanks for the comment.

  • I saw them too. By the way, I'm also in Illinois last year. Did you happen to see it March 5 at the Sears Center?

  • Hey have you ever heard or seen someone play the Fender Custom Shop Bass VI N.O.S? I really want it, but I'm unsure if it's just a six string bass with three single coils, or like, really heavy duty guitar strings and octave down or what. Any help would be great. Thanks.

  • I have never seen nor heard one, but I think it's more of a baritone guitar than a bass. Mostly used in country music in the midrange with a twangy Tele on top of the mix (someone, please correct me). Seems like a fun toy, but frankly, I wouldn't know what to do with one if I had it.

  • The neck finish is deliberately worn when they relic it at the Custom Shop. It's not sticky at all. Nice fast neck. I have a '77 Stingray that feels like flypaper.

  • I know that the pickups are custom wound but do you know any of the specs of the pickups? Are they Fender or some other company? Do they use alnico or ceramic magnets? I have a p bass and would love to replace my pickups with these. They sound awesome.

  • This is what found on the Fender site:

1 Vintage Precision Bass Split Single-Coil Pickup (Middle)

Made with Alnico 5 magnets and enamel coated magnet wire, this P-Bass pickup provides the humbucking punch and boom associated with the electric bass. OEM on American Vintage and many Custom Shop basses. Each pickup comes with a copper shield and black covers.

  • lemon song?

  • Yup.

  • curious but my classic 50 pbass has the same sound!!! so i'm happy because it's a lot cheaper, anyway your bass sounds good

  • Useful, thanks. I am seriously considering a P Bass and this is the sound I was waiting for.

  • If you have a good set of speakers with your computer or are using headphones the sound is very rich. I'm very pleased with the bass. Just remember, not all P-basses are going to sound like this. The Pino is a Custom Shop model that has been fussed over by some serious guitar geeks. So don't rush out for a P-bass after hearing just THIS one.

    Thanks for your note.
