@tjf4375 I agree with you, although Renault espace isn't really a new model but it has been out on sale long time ago like 2005 or something since then... The espace is really popular, in my place 3 of my neighbors have an espace or more than 3, Volvo xc90 has also became a popular suv, so there the test shud have been Volvo xc90 vs Renault espace!
What the hell is the point in comparing a 10 year old 4x4 with a brand new MPV? We all know that safety standards have improved substantially in that time - I don't see the merit of this test at all. Pitch a brand new Disco against the Espace, and that might give you some meaningful data.
I think if they wouldn't run them into each other they would find there would be far less damage to both vehicles. What I do is drive carefully, keeping alert and calm and I have walk away safely every time. Works well for me; I'm sticking with it.
I had a crash in a 99 Disco, was hit head on by a guy in a VW Passat. He was close to 60mph and I managed to slow to a near stop before he hit me. Regardless of what this video shows, I walked away from the crash and the paramedics told me that if I had been in anything else I wouldn't have survived!
New Disco is heavier than the old one...and much safer.
Old 4x4 are not so safe as modern cars, but look at one thing. I drive LR defender, old car wittout ABS, ESP...and i slipped from road once...at 35mph! And hit the wall. Car was intact(big, nasty bull bar), wall crushed(brick)If i had all those electonic gizmos, i would not slip from road at that speed, but if i slipped at 55m/ph it would be much worse...
So, keeping in mind veichle limits, old cars are not less safe. Just drive slowly
The only place you will find an espace like that is at the fucking scrap yard. That explosion was all those shitty french electrics exploding. That usually happens when you are driving down the motorway at 80mph, when its only two years old. Id rather have the discovery at least its worth something second hand.
@townace957 oh well when you crash on the motorway next, just explain it was unfair you died, becuase the oncoming car was far newer than yours... sigh.
@jeep4jeep I don't think the venerable GC is up to those standards...north american cars, even good suvs like the GC are not the best performers on crashes like this one
Well, first hand experience - I had a crash in a WJ year 2000 GC in SanFrancisco, totally demolished the Honda, and the Jeep only lost the number plate.
The Unibody which the Grand Cherokee has always had since launch in1992 offers very dependable occupant protection, and personally would favour that over the Discovery's relatively weak body on ladder chassis.
Overall, it's personal preference - and I actually think LR and Jeep make some of the better 4x4's in Europe and North America
@ijaen The Grand Cherokee is based off the Mercedes ML. Modern SUV's are safer than minivan's and cars because of weight, the bumper heighth(typically the SUV overrides the other), and because it has a much larger crumple zone to absorb more energy(so not only does the passeneger compartment hold up, but the forces inflicted are far less). This isn't 1992, it's 2011.
@ijaen Whatt? Geographic origin means absolutely nothing in these tests. We have the same tests that other countries/regions do, and a few they don't.
@ijaen so many variables in a crash, like weight comparisons, material of engine block construction, sunroof or on, deformation of crumple zones. Jeeps Cherokees have their roots from Renault...since Renault did own them then..when the original XJ Cherokee in 1984 came out. Suburban vs Cherokee,Espace, Range Rover. 6000lbs will tear right through those . And the occupants in the Suburban might survive but badly scarred..but pickups do crumple up badly against themselves. No brainer!
Like I said, I crushed a Honda in a 1999 Grand Cherokee.
Also LOTS of cars score 5 stars, but that is crushing under its own weight.
Think if u drop an egg box from 12 inches to the floor, everything will be fairly safe and secure, then
drop a brick on top of the egg box from the same height.. You have scrambled egg.
In the 3 years i've owned my new shape grand, 3 cars including an audi have crashed into mine, all of them women drivers not paying attention, all three cars. WRECKED!
@jeep4jeep You still wouldn't win, 4x4's are losers when it comes to safety, it's myth that the bigger the car the safer you are, stats haven proven that.
Id stick to the Renault, large SUV`s are by far the worst cars inside for a crash, where as family cars are designed on safety, your GC would end up just like the discovery here,
@hazzatori <<-- Clearly you know nothing about Grand Cherokee.
UNLIKE the Discovery - which is flimsy body on ladder chassis.... all
Grand Cherokees since launch have always had a unibody (same as Renault MPV) - and as we all know a unibody absorbs impacts better that a STAND NORTH AMERICAN LADDER CHASSIS - like Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, RAM, F150, Land Cruisers etc etc...
I suggest you get your facts straight about Jeep GC before comparing the outcome to an old discovery.
@jeep4jeep I'd hardly call a Discovery Flimsy. Not only does it have it's extremely ridged ladder chassis, it has a steel subframe on witch to attach the body panels. As a result, it weighs 4,500 Lbs. It was made to be as ridged as possible for off-road use, but unfortunately doesn't do as well in a crash. The Jeep keeps it's weight down by using light weight plastics, and budget electronics. (That's why you take it to your local bottle depot to recycle it), and save costs by making it uni body.
And, once again, with the misfiring of the airbags on the Discovery, the test is not 100% relevant. Just a couple more perfectly good solid cars destroyed. Like they like it on British car TV shows.
SUV's are not driven by school run mums because they are safer, rather its because they are bigger, and therefore force other vehicles out of the way.
i reckon the renault was designed at in the 90s when crumple zones were well known. mk1 discovery is built on a classic range rover chassis which was originally designed in the late 60s. like counterclockwise says, i'd rather die in a land rover than live in a renault. from experience most car impacts are at low speed, if you have a landrover ypu end up with some scratched paint on a girder where the other guy ends up with a 12" engine bay. on the other hand at 70mph in the landy you die :-)
@gggiscool - Bull bars, since they mount only at the bottom, would be far weaker than the chassis and simply have bent out of the way. They are used to protect expensive lights and bumpers (which in a frontal collision would be designed to absorb a fraction of the impact). The Sump guard only protects the oil pan from being pierced too easily from below when driving on rugged terrain.
Neither would have improved the Land Rover's performance.
I REALLY hate when they crash an old+heavy vehicle and a small+new one with 50% overlap. New vehicles are designed for euroNcap rating which is an % overlap test. Old ones do not have a chassis component in the front to transmit crash energy through the chassis. However, if you test them with %100 overlap, both vehicles would use 100% of their chassis strengths and the result would be a lot different.
@AndraxxusNephilem Hey, the reasoning behind these types of test is that a lot of UK residents own old 4x4's.
It's all well and good crashing a car into a deformable barrier, but it really helps to see how slightly older cars fair in protecting their occupants.
This inst that fair to be honest, it's an old 4x4 without much safety. If you crash tested a newer Landcruiser or Landrover in to your Joe Blogs car you will see the differnce.
There trying to show how an older car would fair in a car with a newer safer car.
Not everyone can afford to buy brand new cars from the show room. So this test is valid in the sense that most people will buy a used and slightly older second hand car.
I'm not one for defending the French (who in the right mind would) but the flame is the airbag deploying. It's a small explosive devise installed on all Airbags.
Free energy has been here all along ,But the big oil corporations don't want that technology revealed,Get a REAL working magnet motor at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,take part in the revolution!
The time has come for Free energy to be revealed ,But the Establishment doesn't want ppl to know this,Get a real free energy motor at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,The revolution begins!
Actually this video demonstrates that two tons of momentum are stopped by one ton. Think not! This just isn't right and obviously the tow lines changed the result. The Discovery would have seriously damaged and trampled the Espace and would not have stopped dead where the damage was done. Very poor, agree that SUV are safer unless you hit something bigger!
big SUV's are very safe its been proven over and over again, the only thing safer than a big SUV is something bigger like a H1, or a truck where you have 5 feet of steel in front of you, and you also have 3 tons on you side. So when you crash into a truck or a h1 you win every single time
Big SUV's can be safer in direct head on collisions. BUT They tend to do badly in side impacts do to body on frame designs. Also they have tended until very recently to have weak roofs that collapse when they roll over.
The other aspect is accident avoidence... again they are better recently with Stability control etc. But in icey snowy weather.. its SUV's I see upside down on the side of the interstate. So as in all things it depends on a lot of factors.
@Sherwin930 It depends on design and strength of the SUV;the Disco I and Disco II were made before EuroNCap was even born and those weren't tested for EURONCap, and merely tarting up an old design cosmetically and putting airbags on it but not changing the mechanicals and chassis design(because the Disco II is just a cosmetic makeover not a full revamp)doesn't necessarily the crash safety performance of it.
this video is way biased....the land rover driver was way closer to the wheel than the renault's driver and they showed no footage insade of the land rover during the test and they showed nothing of the kids car seat in the land rover yet they 'claimed' it had worst results and the land rover also had a tech difficulty with the airbags not deploying which would obviously give the driver of it higher impact readings......assholes
@felando2002 Yes but you can see from the pictures alone that his legs would have been destroyed.
They said that the driver in the renualt could have walked away, the other bloke wouldnt have. The Renault and most other modern cars are crash tested and designed for safety, a land rover may be bigger, but it is in no way safer.
They also perform poorly in stability tests, the center of gravity is much higher.
If you want to be safe, change your car every 3 years, and buy a merc S-class... Of course your financial security will suffer... Why don't they crash a lorry and a Mini? I bet the experts will be divided on that one ;p
@counterclockwise123 if it makes you jizz to die in that coffin called a 4x4 at age 35 with a 3 year old kid you obviously have serious problems.... I d get that boring "bus" instead and get a good chance of being spared and walk away from the wreck with my kid. Life 's too short bro, and all that "fancy stuff" ain't makin' it.....
@jlo4evaxxx It is in fact a "MIRA" winch means it is one owned by MIRA
(Motor Industry Research Association) a test centre near Nuneaton in Warwickshire, England, and was the site of a former Airbase in World War 2 called RAF Norton Lindsay - hence the long runways to do all kinds of testing.
well this is stupid, people don't buy old disco 1s to ferry their kids about, they buy range rovers or disco 2s both of which have better protection, you can't test an old 4x4 against a new, more expensive MPV, not really a fair test is it, an old espace would have disintergrated. I'm not convinced
@14th20thKRHkickass The disco 2 is only a facelift, much of the mechanicals are basically the same as disco 1-so even in a disco 2 you would still have been seriously injured even with the airbags fitted.
a bit unfair, old verses new, of course modern people carriers would do better, but try a modern discovery and then see the outcome. I hate when shitty programs like 5th gear don't do fair tests to 4x4's. only reason they didn't was probably because they cant afford to buy and smash up a discovery 3?!
No, the point of this test was to show you, that most family's in the UK have a second hand car. these cars are clearly allot more un-safe than modern cars. It was to show you that, if you drive a second hand 4x4 (which most people do) and you had a crash with a modern car, the people in the second hand 4x4 are worse off.
Why does it not surprise me that Land Rover's airbags didn't work? They do have nice seats and walnut trim on the interior, so you can comfortably rest while dying on the side of the road.
these paranoic videos make me laugh. wanna be safe in an automobile. drive carefully.! and do your best to avoid idiots.. these tests are always subjective... i am sure if you did these tests ten times with the same conditions it would never work out the same way twice.. especially with older cars .renault are undoubtably the worst of a bad lot of french made junk! the shonky electrics in them are more likely to insure you burn to death before you manage to crash it by yourself.
@aaron681 dude you are stuped like an ass.renault - junk !! you probably ride a bike this renault is the most safest car in the world - EuroN'cap haven't test more safe car ever. do idiot like you know that since 2003 every new renault have 5 stars from crash test and this is the MAXIMUM + Renault is the first brand with 5 stars for pasenger security in crash. the older espace also was the most safest car in the world for it's time. so F U C K you and have a nice day
@bobsan5784 You have got me there! i do ride a bike!! However you are clearly an ignoramis and an aspiring volvo driver. Learn how to use syntax better and you maybe able to get a job that would allow you to afford one. Then you can better fit in to the stereotype which motorcyclists like myself can more easily avoid...i am glad that i have managed to rile you up so much. perhaps your head will explode and save some poor soul from being mown down by a flaming espace.
You said it! my mum had a second hand Renault once. NEVER AGAIN! we went out one day to look at cars, and half way down the road . . the cam belt snapped! sure, Renaults are safe, but my god they are soo unreliable.
If renault suddenly started putting so much safety features in their cars, more so than British and Japanese cars it says somthing about the Frenh driving standards.
i own a landrover defender 110, its 20 year old and built like a tank, but its obviously not going to be as safe in a high speed crash, but its safer than most of them , at the end of the day you gotta be driving like a numpty to have a head on at 60, ill stick with my defender thank you.
Same here, its hardly a fair test to compare a 2003 espace against a disco built ten years previous anyway. Lets see a disco 3 smashed into that espace, thats just as fair a comparison.

@AndraxxusNephilem Hey, the reasoning behind these types of test is that a lot of UK residents own old 4x4's.
It's all well and good crashing a car into a deformable barrier, but it really helps to see how slightly older cars fair in protecting their occupants.

@Porsche1080 Thats the original disco.

@EnterMyUserNameHere i know, but i'm just saying, the new ones surely would have made a difference
Porsche1080 1 year ago
@Porsche1080 More than definitely. I think its a little unfair too.

@gardmans1 I think the flame is the car setting off the airbag.

@valibmwe92
I'm not one for defending the French (who in the right mind would) but the flame is the airbag deploying. It's a small explosive devise installed on all Airbags.

Experts are wrong!!! You rock!!
Rafael1977Nico 1 year ago
big SUV's are very safe its been proven over and over again, the only thing safer than a big SUV is something bigger like a H1, or a truck where you have 5 feet of steel in front of you, and you also have 3 tons on you side. So when you crash into a truck or a h1 you win every single time
Sherwin930 1 year ago
@Sherwin930
So as in all things it depends on a lot of factors.
kens97sto171 1 year ago
@Sherwin930 It depends on design and strength of the SUV;the Disco I and Disco II were made before EuroNCap was even born and those weren't tested for EURONCap, and merely tarting up an old design cosmetically and putting airbags on it but not changing the mechanicals and chassis design(because the Disco II is just a cosmetic makeover not a full revamp)doesn't necessarily the crash safety performance of it.

this video is way biased....the land rover driver was way closer to the wheel than the renault's driver and they showed no footage insade of the land rover during the test and they showed nothing of the kids car seat in the land rover yet they 'claimed' it had worst results and the land rover also had a tech difficulty with the airbags not deploying which would obviously give the driver of it higher impact readings......assholes
felando2002 1 year ago
@felando2002 yeah thats so true.
deadheat007 1 year ago
@felando2002 Yes but you can see from the pictures alone that his legs would have been destroyed.
They said that the driver in the renualt could have walked away, the other bloke wouldnt have. The Renault and most other modern cars are crash tested and designed for safety, a land rover may be bigger, but it is in no way safer.
They also perform poorly in stability tests, the center of gravity is much higher.

That's an old SUV, introduced in 1989. Versus a brand new minivan. Why not test a 1989 Espace against a new Discovery IV.
You proved nothing useful. Except that money buys safety.

well this is stupid, people don't buy old disco 1s to ferry their kids about, they buy range rovers or disco 2s both of which have better protection, you can't test an old 4x4 against a new, more expensive MPV, not really a fair test is it, an old espace would have disintergrated. I'm not convinced
14th20thKRHkickass 1 year ago
@14th20thKRHkickass The disco 2 is only a facelift, much of the mechanicals are basically the same as disco 1-so even in a disco 2 you would still have been seriously injured even with the airbags fitted.

a bit unfair, old verses new, of course modern people carriers would do better, but try a modern discovery and then see the outcome. I hate when shitty programs like 5th gear don't do fair tests to 4x4's. only reason they didn't was probably because they cant afford to buy and smash up a discovery 3?!
kieron333 1 year ago
@kieron333
SinclairisCool 1 year ago
This video is about the Espace vs the Discovery 1, not the Discovery 2.

Why does it not surprise me that Land Rover's airbags didn't work? They do have nice seats and walnut trim on the interior, so you can comfortably rest while dying on the side of the road.
83ls 1 year ago
The answer is simple, and expected as one is a family car, and the other, an off road vehicle.
jushayward 1 year ago
these paranoic videos make me laugh. wanna be safe in an automobile. drive carefully.! and do your best to avoid idiots.. these tests are always subjective... i am sure if you did these tests ten times with the same conditions it would never work out the same way twice.. especially with older cars .renault are undoubtably the worst of a bad lot of french made junk! the shonky electrics in them are more likely to insure you burn to death before you manage to crash it by yourself.
aaron681 1 year ago
@aaron681 dude you are stuped like an ass.renault - junk !! you probably ride a bike this renault is the most safest car in the world - EuroN'cap haven't test more safe car ever. do idiot like you know that since 2003 every new renault have 5 stars from crash test and this is the MAXIMUM + Renault is the first brand with 5 stars for pasenger security in crash. the older espace also was the most safest car in the world for it's time. so F U C K you and have a nice day
bobsan5784 1 year ago

SinclairisCool 1 year ago
You can't use a old car with old malfunctioning safety devices as a true comparison for that vehicle.

i own a landrover defender 110, its 20 year old and built like a tank, but its obviously not going to be as safe in a high speed crash, but its safer than most of them , at the end of the day you gotta be driving like a numpty to have a head on at 60, ill stick with my defender thank you.
fantomfarter 1 year ago
4X4 are always safer especially when I/you attach a bull-bar to the front and rear and use sump shields such as seen on Labdrovers or Pajero's.
HoodedFig900 1 year ago
@HoodedFig900 Bullbars have been illegal for a few years because they kill and injure pedestrians.

no you just can't add big metal ones anymore, loads of people have bullbars, old cars can still have them too, just new ones that can't
14th20thKRHkickass 1 year ago
Same here, its hardly a fair test to compare a 2003 espace against a disco built ten years previous anyway. Lets see a disco 3 smashed into that espace, thats just as fair a comparison.
