  • Looks amazing. :-)

  • thats so pretty ! he'll luv it !!

  • @gusndot1 Thanks!

  • I rub Crisco all over my work area and then I put the icing sugar on top of the Crisco. And then roll out the fondant. I stop a few times to make the fondant can still be moved. I have never had the fondant stick or rip while doing this. Hope that helps!

  • @jesslain2009 thanks ...I'll try that.

  • beautiful!

  • where did you get the marshmallow fondant recipe? and how does it taste?

  • You can always chop up the amount of fondant that you need and then heat it up for about 20 seconds or so in the microwave or add corn syrup. You can roll it out, but it is very hard to at first :)

  • @Nest1089 Thanks for that ... & actually I have since tried the idea of microwaving for a while. I was doing this with small pieces for flowers etc ... initially worked well, but if I did it too many times (ie, rezapping left over bits that I had already microwaves) it got hard and crumbly and I had to throw it out.

  • did u use sugarveil??

  • @ROBOBECCA what is sugarveil? (Possibly we call it by a different name in Australia?)

  • put poweerd sugar and or crn starch

  • @power2thepoeple13 thanks. I tried icing sugar, but next time I'll give the corn starch a try.

  • georgous really lovely - hope u didnt have to eat all that 15kgs of fondant

    chocolate fruit cake yummmmmyyy

  • haha - I actually opened that fondant the other day. Did you watch MasterChef here in Australia? If you did and you remember the coffee ecclairs Gary & George made ... well the fondant I bought is the stuff they used to ice their ecclairs! So I made up their ecclair recipe and used up (a tiny amount) of the fondant. They were BEAUTIFUL!!

  • i didnt watch it = but i know the one u mean = ur cakes are gorgeous

  • looks amazing!!great job!

  • Thanks very much!

  • I had the same trouble the first time I used MM Fondant. I had used confectioner's sugar also. But the next time, I used veg. shortening. It was SO MUCH BETTER. Oh, and it gives the fondant a very pretty shiny appearance. And no worries, it doesn't stay greasy...it absorbs in somehow and doesn't rub off or anything. I also used it when I was making figures if the fondant started to dry out at all. It made a huge difference overall. Anyone w/a dry climate can do it this way.

  • Thanks for the tip - I will try that next time.

  • Oh MM fondant came out great looks of powdered sugar!

  • Nice! I made some MM fondant for my little bros birthday cake! Tinted it blue!

  • Thanks. I tried making mm fondant for the 2nd fondant cake I did - it was a bit sticky!

  • I admire and respect women like you...

  • thank you so much!

  • I could listen to you talk all day! Beautiful cake!!

  • aw! Thanks!

  • Girlfriend NOBODY could ask for better especially after you went through with the fondant. This cake is just lovely.

  • Well thanks! Glad you like it.

  • i have made lots of cakes but they never turn so detailed like that

  • Thanks!

  • Hahaha that happened to me too with the Marshmellow fondant sticking to the bottom........Great Cake!! Well done

  • so annoying hey!!

  • any chance you could make me one ?

  • aw thanks splashie!! Gee I'd love to ... but I'm not sure it would survive the long trip to the UK!!

  • This cake is beautiful! Wonderful job! I bet your husband loved it! ;)

  • Thanks Laura, I had fun doing it, but my hands were sore after piping all those stripes!

  • Well Done looks fabulous!

  • Thanks sam!

  • Are the lines also fondant?

  • Hi Winifred. No, the lines are piped with royal icing. (That's the icing that starts soft so you can pipe with it, but it sets hard.

  • Ahh okay, sweet. I feel for my first cake I want to make a cake similar. But a pinkish one and a mudcake. I love this cake! Good job.

  • Great work with the piping! I always make a mess when trying to pipe. I agree, it's hard to do cakes for men, but you did a great job!

  • Thank you! I have had a few pretty girlie ones to do lately, but my camera is playing up and I can't download to my computer ... so I can't upload to YouTube ...I must get that fixed!

  • Wow that's a beautiful cake! Loved it!

  • Thanks Juju, this one was my first time using fondant.

  • Hi, i think your cake looked really good. I just wanted to ask you how did you do those stripes and what icing did you use for it?

    thank you

  • Thanks Amkool! The stripes are piped with royal icing (1kg icing sugar, 6 tablespoons meringue powder mixed with water - maybe 1/4 - 1/2 cup) I think I used a no 1 or 2 tip (just a small plain circle opening). You touch the icing to the top of the cake then come straight down, slightly away from the cake (don't 'pull' or the stripe will break!) then touch at the bottom to attach the stripe at the bottom of the cake- easy, but tiring on your hands after a while!! Hope that helps.

  • Thank you so so much

  • Yea. Haha! I hope so too, then. That you can make a girlie cake later :D.

  • So colorful! I like the color. And it was so creative and beutiful! And it's enough for an dad! Very good! Bye! :D.

  • Thanks Lisen. I wanted something to look a bit masculine - I'm just waiting to get to do a girlie fondant cake that I can cover in flowers!!

  • Very good job! You have lovely writing as well. I do have a tip for your fondant not sticking. :) Before lying your marshmallow fondant down on the mat, rub just a dab of veg shortening on your mat and then sprinkle a bit a icing sugar on top as well. The shortening will keep it from sticking..but just a dab, not too much. I have noticed that marshmallow fondant does stick more than the store bought fondant so I hope this tip will help you. :)

  • Thanks firelego!! And thanks for that tip about the shortening. I have just finished my second fondant cake, but I will definately try that on the next fondant one I do.

  • amazingly done ! look at that piping... they are so evenly spaced... im amazed!!! im sure your husband loved it! :) keep making more cakes :)

  • Thanks Mayen - it's so basic compared to your beautiful cakes, but I will keep trying!

  • love the stripes, and the piped borders are so neat!!

    xx

  • Thanks ello...not as impressive as your birthday cake though!

  • Hey Ello - thanks for the subscription!!

  • That is a great cake! Your stripes look very evenly spaced and the colors are perfect. I struggle with 'guy' cakes too! Hard to make a masculine cake when I like to make my cakes pretty lol! You did an awesome job, keep up the good work!

  • Thank you! I'd like to do another fondant one that I can try roses and other girly things on.

  • I concur w/Tammy - every time u touch the rolling pin 2the fondant, rotate it - don't flip it over, just rotate it to make sure it doesn't stick 2ur surface. This looks really awesome - u should be VERY proud, ur piping is impeccable!

  • Thanks Mimzy. I'll have another go with the fondant and try the rotating. Do you use marshmallow fondant or another type?

  • I either use Satin Ice or I make my own from sugar, corn syrup and gelatin.

  • wow, thats a fantastic cake especially for your first attempt at fondant!

My fondant used to always stick to the top when i first started useing it. i realised that you have to keep rotating the fondant after a couple of rolls and keep putting more icing sugar underneath as the fondant soaks it up pretty quick!

Well, done, the stripes look really good, and i know your husband will be so proud!

    Well done,

    Tammy xxxxx

  • Thanks Tammy. He did like it - he's almost finished eating the small cake on top already!! (He LOVES fondant!!) When you say to rotate the fondant, do you meant to turn it over, or just to pick it up and move it and put the icing sugar under it? Thanks for the tips!!

  • Oh im sure i would have eaten it all by now haha!

Never ever flip the fondant over, you will get awful marks from the icing sugar that are sometimes hard to get off. just turn it around and lift bits of it up to check its not sticking, adding a bit more icing sugar under it every now and then. You'll find that the centre is the most sticky as thats where most of the pressure is when rolling, so its important you keep it dusted. Also, try not to roll it too thin, because it will often split xxxx

  • Thanks again for the tips Tammy - do you use marshmallow fondant or another type?

  • well, i tend to use regal ice, which is fondant, but i buy it from my cake store. its by renshaw. i dont know if they make it in australia, but they might lol:P
