You can't really download you need steam to fully Operate this game and no it's worth downloading just instead of buying this game get the orange box it's a good deal In Stores its actually cheaper then via steam for some reason but they got good deals on the rest of the games.Like the complete valve back get all cs half lifes and stuff for about 109 dollars.

Half-life series is story driven, you'll get a lot more appreciation for the game if you play from HL1 .... the story is amazing, even better than games like deus-ex 1 which had an awesome story.

I play the game because I love the story, and the atmosphere, and the innovations the Valve team has brought us. Of course one engine is always gonna be better then the other at any given time. That will always be the way.

well a new king is in tell, the Dunia engine for Far Cry 2 puts the Source to shame. You don't get it, Half Life 2 is let down by a crappy engine. Imagine what Valve can do if they had the Unreal 3 or Dunia engine to tinkel with. And also the animation in Half Life 2 is so gay, and the A.I is shit as well, the A.I in Far Cry 2 on Easy is way harder to deal with then the idiots you shoot at in HL2.

Have you seen the latest source engine render games? Left4Dead? The source engine is not the Dunia engine or Unreal3 engine or CryEngine 2, obviously, those engines are amazing. But what they also are is terribly inefficient. The source engine's beauty-to-system-requirements ratio is incredible and is the whole reason why I have so much respect for Valve and their games. I think Half-Life 2 STILL looks great, for example--after 4 years! Not to mention EP2.
