For me it's not that the styling is bad so much that, as tuned as this car is and well engineered for track it's quite a bit less aggressive and sporty than the previous ss. It definitely wins the 4cyl sleeper award but I imagine some folks like for their cars to look as mean as they drive
how? lol the ss/sc models are no where near in the power numbers as the ss/tc's.....and the entire car was totally re engineered for the turbo models....the clutches were beefed up, suspension, minor motor tweaks, lsd....
You're right there isn't a huge difference aesthetically, and the wheels are cooler on this one, for me, it was the subtle touches the old one had such as the intercooler and the consequently more aggressive front fascia along with that big wing that used to come on the back. I'm as big a fan of the Cobalt as anyone. It was just my first observation.
Yeah I see what you mean, but you can still get the big wing as an option. GM just made the small wing standard because a lot of people were just taking off the big wing if they had one before.
the styling on this car is a little bland. performance is likely good in a straight line. however, this car is likely to suffer from torque steering, as it is a front-wheel-drive car. too much power on FWD cars is not good. RWD or AWD i think are better.
Sorry to reply so long after your comment, but the cobalt happens to be the fastest car in the world, around the 'ring. That's nuremburg, and any other road-course. Faster than the viper acr, faster than the veyron, faster than stink. I find this amusing in a fuck-with-rich-littledick kind of way. I'm buying a sedan, uncorking and stage-1, and hittin' the streets. For racing, though, we're getting the genesis turbo. We live very close to union grove greatlakes dragaway, we'll post. Peace.
The 'ring refers to nuremburg. I was under the impression at the time that the cobalt was faster than the rest mentioned. Now I don't even care. I DO care how fast my kid is, though. She runs like her knees are strapped together. I was one of the fastest skaters in the world, and have hopes in her. Now retired and broken, but not broke, I find the Islands more attractive than the street. Still can't catch the rusta! Peace
Yep. I'm done here, I was mostly just teasing the big displacement-small penis crowd. The truth is, I used to design cars, and have had about enough of them. Mine run on mostly water. Aqualine is 60% water, 40% alcohol. Runs cooler and stronger. See Water Power, NZ. That's not me, but the fuel is the same. Now we are designing ultralight cars with 1000 mpg potential. But to this day, speedblading is my favorite way to get around.
wish they made a higher displacement engine, it's not like they had the rally restriction (like the 4g63's) 2.5L turbo would have been so much better..
It's the no lift shifting GM put in these cars. Retards spark so you can keep the throttle floored. Interesting development, but yeah it does sound like a fart. So much for dispelling the fart can taunts. :)
GM really dissapoints me. When the GTO first came out, it had an LS1, then the following year they put an LS2. Same with the Cobalt SS, they first had supercharged and then now they are putting a turbocharger. why didnt they just have a turbo ffom the beggining?
I agree rice GM fucked that up with the GTO, and it looks like a Cavalier. They should have tested a turbo when they made the SS. No new airplane has a supercharger, because they are inefficient. All forced induction planes have turbos.
true, but I think the goal they were shooting for was performance and economy. A S/C will boost right from idle, thus lowering the fuel economy. Where as a turbo is spooled up, and dosen't do anything until you would hit rpm's higher than you would usually shift at during normal driving.
Variable Turbine Technologies??? its pretty cool Check out ( Top Gear - 997 Turbo ) Clarkson does an epic review of the 911 Turbo. I think he mentions the boost situation
Guess what??? I called Potamkin Chevrolet and Maroone Chevrolet here in South Florida and they told me that the 08 SS didnt come and wont come out. The Turbo ss is coming out in 09. Thats what they told me. I am disappointed now because I wanted to buy the car!!!
The only issue I have with GM making this Vehicle is that they are marketing to Tuners, and arn't offering Stages, the way they did with the SS Supercharged. I don't think its fair to sell a product meant to be modified, but not allow a factory warranty to stay in effect. I realize stock its generating as much HP as a Stage3 supercharged, but more HP is always the natural progression of cars. Not offering stages is really screwing the consumer on this one IMO.
I see your point, but at the same time, Honda meant for the SI to be modified, but if you do, they don't cover it anymore either. Most companies don't offer tuning packages, when GM did it was an exception, not the rule. Not very many companies at all offer such packages, but it sure would be nice if GM did keep it though.
The K20Z3 according to Wiki runs an 11.0:1 compression ratio, making roughly 200bhp. (This is fairly high)Being an S2000 owner myself I can guarantee that after market modification besides, chip and bolt ons is exceedingly risky in comparison to a stock FI vehicle, which is why I would completely understand why Honda would void a warranty. Honda Internals are very good, but running even 10 lbs. on a high compression motor isn't the best move... 100+ hp per liter is about it for an N/A app. IMO
What the hell do you need stages for. Buy individual parts that work well together. Its called research. Besides Chevy has given you a car that runs 13.9 to begin with. This isnt no Japanese garbage. Shit the new gt mustang is not much faster and it has half the engine. I would get heads, cam, methanol, better intercooler and turbo, and it might run mid to high 12's. This is a cheap sports car, adding stages costs money. The new Civic looks like a goddamn egg to begin with. Please comment.
I use the Term stages the way your implying better performance parts. The flexibility for a Tuner to modify under warranty (with restrictions) would make this a more marketable item. (IMO) Ironically, I have only positive marks for this vehicle, except I hate the FWD. Chevrolet as a whole delivers the most amount of power at every level of competition. $25k = 260HP $44k = 430HP $72k = 505HP $100k = 600HP
The Honda S2000, Nissan 350Z and GT-R are hardly garbage. The S2000 puts out an amazing 120 HP per liter N/A while the Z puts down 306 HP for a V6 N/A. Not to mention that the GT-R will do 0-60 ~ sub 4 seconds, for $72,000? They handle well, and the S2000 has a very nice interior. However, like many other S2000 drivers I traded mine for a 2008 Corvette, I couldn't live without the LS3. Either way I feel that Chevrolet leads the world in value to performance!
I am 100% in agreement with you and specially now with the SS cobalt I do think for what it comes with and its looks its the best option of all 25K and under small sporty 4cl that can run fast and save gas as well. Just look at an evo they cost 33k ad cobalt ss cost 22k . Evo has 291 hp and cobalt has 260 hp. Cobalt interior looks 10 times better than evos and has a sunroof too plus satellite radio and onstar. What more can you ask for under 25k
This will sound really stupid, but I love the boost gauge the most in the SS... lol, out of all the things that you could love a car for, a small little bubble with a needle. The option that really blew me away with this model, is that Brembo's are used. Chevrolet took the time and put the money where it counts, engine and brakes ;-D
I agree with you redbaron, I am referring to the average ricer jap car. Those are the best jap cars that you listed. I will add the EVO 9 and the Sub Wrx, but try finding a 13.9 quarter mile car from japan for 22 thousand dollars. You wont. Thats what I am getting at, the GTR is a bargain considering the performance, looks, and hey four seats. ; ) Other than that a civic si cannot compare to a Cobalt SS, and the S2000 is 32k dollars new. Not to sound shitty, but that buys a pretty nice Mustang.
No doubt the Cobalt is the best Sports car (new) (except for the FWD) for under $25,000. However, IMO the S2000 blows the doors off all Mustangs hence why I bought one once upon a time. GT500 is a beast though. The second you decide to spend less than $50 but more then $32 = Corvette, As far as
(Used) Sports cars go under $25k I think the C5 is the car to get,300ZX TT & VR4 aren't bad either, but bolt ons on the LS1 is easy power to make. Which doesn't need tons of boost
the new Mustang GT's are pretty damn quick... my brother has a 05 Mustang GT with a C&L intake, O/R x-pipe, exhaust, and its all tuned.... running 93 octane and its quick.... he has a 2001 Mustang GT that hes trying to trade in for a new Cobalt SS/TC.. he test drove one 2 nights ago and i rode along... the sound is nice on the inside and i like the interior.. i hope he can get this car... oh yea and you say that the Cobalt has half the engine but it also has a turbo...
turbo doesnt neccesarily mean anything. Its a four cylinder. Not a turbo 6 banger. Yeah the new mustangs are fast. A bit too heavy and the mirrors are ugly, but overall a good car. I never liked the 2001 gen mustangs GT. Not that attractive looking and not that fast stock.
POS honda wannabe, just buy a honda at least they look better. Quit wasting your time on this economy crap and then act like its fast, your only fooling yourself losers.
If you like Hondas better, then thats your opinion. Don't say that the SS isn't fast though. If you're trying to compare it to its Honda competition (civic Si) you're talking about 260 horsepower and 260 torque vs 197 horsepower and 140 torque. The civic Si will run high 14's in the 1/4 mile at best whereas the new SS will do very low 14's. Facts are facts and you need to do more research before you put down cars you don't know much about.
I agree, comparing this particular model to the Honda Si isn't very good, an S2000 would be a better comparison, but completely out of price range low $20k vs low $30k... People compared the SRT4 to Honda's as well, when in actuality both models of SS's and 4's weren't designed to maximize fuel economy, but rather a Tuner crazy.
@marinmijatovic the ss turbo lowest stock 1/4 time is 13.2 what u mean low 14's lol. the newbest of drivers should be able to pull high 13's. my first time ever on a track and still getting use to a stick. i pulled a 13.8
I might have to go all the way to houston just to get mines becaue all the dealerships I called in my area in Lousiana(even in new orleans) have no Idea what im talking about LOL....god save one for me!!
The exterior changes are: New 18 inch rims, Headlamps might look the same but look closely. The lights don't have the "orange bulbs" anymore. It's all crystal clear. Also the front grill changed. The foglights also changed a bit...There is a black surrounding around them. They forgot to put down "Turbocharged" below the SS emblems on the doors. The current SS/SC has "Supercharged" below the SS emblems on the doors. Other than that, the new Cobalt looks fantastic!
gotta love these cars, waiting for the 2009's to come out then i think i'm gonna go get one after selling my current car (mazda 6)only thing tht i'm a little upset about is tht GM might not want to do stages with this car,
Before you put thumbs down, I LOVE THIS CAR, But on to a few things. disappointed on a few things. 1. with so many changes in 08, there is no exterior style changes..well, wheels, grill, thats all basically. but why not update the old school style headlamps? I know we probably won't see HID's in this price range but why not projector style lamps? this make it look cheap. also, that 1980's style Key Lock on the trunk has to go! 2. quiet exhaust. 3. lower speed with high spoiler.
I love these cars. I am fan of the Cobalt, and when I am finally able to buy a car, this is what i'm wanting. All the Chevy vehicles in our family have more than proven themselves reliable. Plus, cobalts look good. Anybody know if the rumor about the cobalts getting the new split nose like the malibus is true?
Great to see that GM is stepping up its game. In 10 years, boosted 4 cylinders will probably be the biggest selling sports cars with gas prices and CAFE standards. Smart for GM to establish itself with a car like this, I don't see Ford even trying.
smart gm sales are slacking and what they about 2 overcome is crazy most car companies f up with a follow up but chevy kept everything the same and jus added some new goodies 2 the motor thats the way cars suppose 2 b 263hp if u run it on 93 n it hitting the market on april 7 n with that no lift thats will put alot of haters 2 sleep i bet wit few bolt ons it can surpass the 300hp mark n for racers from what hearin the lsd is a good 1 so get it know rather than later

From what I read about it awhile back to get it to make the full 263 HP you'll need to use 100 Octane otherwise 91 (premium) for the 240. It's nice but premium is expensive =(.
I went last Saturday. The dealer didn't know ANYTHING about this car. Said it was supercharged and available at the end of the year in very limited production! haha. He got his boss after a while and he admited that I knew more than anyone at the dealer (which is fine, just dont make lies up).
Anyway, check out the nurburgring time on wikipedia and the MPG. It's a bad ass car!
Yeah I did the same thing!! Stink'n Sales Clerk didn't know jack squat!! I plan on trading my 06 Sentra SER Spec-V for it! My Sentra has Brembo brakes as well but not on ALL FOUR wheels like this! I can't wait!! I think the most runs I'll look forward to is a Stage 2 Cobalt SS/SC and the V8 boys! I can't wait to get it! This video is PERFECT! I hope they make Stage Upgrades for this too!
i could dig that i heard its crazy out there alomost as ad here n boston thats why us tuners gotta respect this art and build the best street beast thats out there only thing i can say when this come out buy n buy the biggest turbonetics turbo avaliable and leave these haters and busters behind the balt takeover coming soon
so ur looking at 26,000 sumthing out the door i bought a brand new SS/SC sticker price 23,000 sumthing came to 25,000 so dont believe the under 25k since
actually i have just placed an order for mine, as i probably want get it til next week, but they sold it to me, with all of my incentives(i have 2 chevy's) for about 19k, plus my trade in, so i walked out with it for 14k. im eagerly awaiting, they just now started officially selling them here in houston.
They only produced 2,537 Cobalt SS's in 2009.
120 of those are yellow.
My car is 1 of 120.

2 - wrong design gas in hole on the right passage side

The car is amazing, brakes, engine, suspension, all good. But the body style needs to go. I'd rather have a cavalier with the same "guts."

No I know, I'm just saying the old one "looked" more aggressive and sporty than this one, the figures though speak for themselves, new one kicks ass.
rodrigoatx06 2 years ago
How does it look anymore aggressive? the only changes really is that you cant see the intercooler in this the tc, when you could see it in the sc.
and not to mention the rims are way better in this car.
usernameavailable152 2 years ago
You're right there isn't a huge difference aesthetically, and the wheels are cooler on this one, for me, it was the subtle touches the old one had such as the intercooler and the consequently more aggressive front fascia along with that big wing that used to come on the back. I'm as big a fan of the Cobalt as anyone. It was just my first observation.

Don't know about the yellow, but still a very good looking car with affordable performance. Go GM!!

Great to see that GM is stepping up its game. In 10 years, boosted 4 cylinders will probably be the biggest selling sports cars with gas prices and CAFE standards. Smart for GM to establish itself with a car like this, I don't see Ford even trying.
