I just tried it and I can't do it because there is NOT a "tone" or "ringtone" option on the iTunes.

I own a mac too, and all you need to do is either have an .m4a or a .mp3 and you just put it into GarageBand (preferably a new project) and press the little cycle button next to the play button. A yellow band will appear at the top, and all you have to do is drag it to your preferred length and section. Once you have that done, click share, and send it to iTunes as a Ringtone and you're all done. I can't really help you if the song is a .mp4. If it is, I guess you're out of luck. :)

i own a Mac and followed your directions up to the part with your software. I downloaded the Free Ringtone Maker in the Mac App Store instead. All of my music in my itunes automatically synced so i could pick any song from my list and make the ringtone from that. it saves it to itunes automatically and once i moved the ringtones to my iphone and synced my iphone 4s to my itunes, they were all there. very easy! :)

ok tried this on iphone 3gs on os 4,didnt work the first time but i tried again and it worked.2nd time i named the song only with numbers eg.345.m4r, then i deleteted from itunes the song that was in anyform(mp3,m4a)then put the .m4r in,it made a ringtones section in the left.just drag n drop and sync.when i synced it didnt show me a error msg,it synced nornally.in the iphone you can find it in settings/sounds/ringtone and it should be on the very top under a new category called custom :)

try recutting/rendering the mp3 and doing the process over again. if that doesnt work, try making it so that the .m4r file/m4a/and mp3 never had any sort of characters in it besides numbers and letters. also, im going to assume you obviously had either "sync all ringtones" or had the ringtone selected to be synced

after going back and experimenting with the .m4r's i discovered that the ringtones folder isnt necessary, just go aheead and double click the .m4r file and it should work. the folder that it's in doesnt matter. sorry for the confusion

You can do this in 2 mins with itunes, make an ACC copy 30 seconds long,when done rename it .MPR, and del the song u just made, then it will be fond by itues as a rirngtone, EASY as, this way take bloody ages

it can be up to 40 seconds long, and the extension has to be renamed to ".m4r" , not ".mpr"
