Credit to McCain for flat out owning up to screwing up, but man he sure tried to not show any humility. Maybe he thought that admitting error was un-presidential? I would have given him a lot more credit if he didn't try to talk over Letterman and actually apologized rather than try to turn a few jokes right after admitting he made a mistake. "What can I say"? How about "I'm sorry, Dave".
Barack Obama has some wonderul ideas of bipartisanship. It's too bad he can't live up to them as well as John McCain has done the last 40 years. The 2008 election marked the rise of the fringes of both parties taking hold. The far left got their guy in Obama while the far right got rid of the one guy who could've moderated their party. America lost double in November 2008
I'm a liberal, but I like Ron Paul. Some of his stuff I disagree with but he seems like an honest man with his head in the right place. My only problem with him is that I don't think that would last long should he make president.
He would need to work with congress and the house and since they are all rooted in crazy partisan politics, i just don't think he would be able to stay honorable very long.
He's from the House. You're saying that the branch he's currently in would corrupt him if he were President? And if he's an honest man, that would mean that not ALL of them are rooted in crazy partisan politics after all.
I just think that if he somehow managed to win the presidency, he would need the full support of his party, and lets be honest, they have a different agenda. So he would either have to do things to get that support or he won't be able to get the presidency.
giving toughness feats of an alaskan doesnt really say much.. I lived up there. they're all nuts. hell, I even knew a bum up there.. and if you've ever been to alaska, you know that's quite a feat.
Anyone on their right mind knows that Palin hurt McCain big time. Yes she might have "energized" a faction of the GOP, but conservative independents and intellectuals were left with nothing.
Well Obama didn't insult America by electing a backwoods beauty queen as a running mate with hopes of pandering to women. Obama also didn't cancel on Letterman at the last minute claiming he had to race back to washington so the world wouldn't explode, then shows live with Katie Couric then giving a speech in New York the next day.... So Letterman had an ax to grind and good on him for doing it!
I don't think McCain would have done any better and I really don't like Palin either. Ron Paul was the best candidate, but he didn't make the primary. After Ron Paul wiped the floor with the rest of the republican hopefulls, the media quickly closed every single door that Ron Paul had. They realized that Americans were responding well to his message of freedom and true change.
McCain would be doing much worse. His knee-jerk war is the answer to everything would have had us at war with Iran, Honduras and probably bombing Somalia because of that pirate situation we had.
No we would have an old man that could die at any moment with a glorified beauty queen to take over if such an unfortunate event would occur...
And Letterman wasn't that hard on McCain. He gave him some crap for bailing out on his show. As he should! Especially since McCain had been a friend of the show for many years...

Hey McCain where's your real Birth Certificate!...
You were born in Colon the capital of Colon Province in the Republic of Panama. Not on base as you claimed, and NOT at CoCo Solo Family Hospital as you the phony had said... Why did you lied!
I love Obama and hate McCain and even I must say that McCain is AMERICAN! Come on bro, there are better things to argue than whether this man who is obviously American is American. He was born in another country because his father was in the military. It's hard to see a single reason, petty technicalities aside, why he wouldn't be considered American. Pathetic argument.
I can tell that McCain openly lied at least a few times in the interview. Dave did a great job of really pinning him into the corner on the fraudulent criticism he had of Obama's relationship with Ayers. Dave is a tenacious interviewer.
I don't think McCain was the greatest option, but Dave is a partisan who clearly likes liberals. Obama NEVER addresses any of his relationships that were questionable. He never explained it except to say that he was 8 years old. when Ayers was bombing. The question wasn't how old he was , but why would he befriend a guy who in recent years expressed that he wasn't sorry and wished he had done more.
The guy was turned away from entering Canada if I'm not mistaken
Did you have a strong politican opinion when you were 8 ? Letterman even though i admit he was patisan showed Mc Cain up to be the fake that he was. It was obvious that he chose Palin to get the popular younger vote, and dave pointed out this fact
i'm sorry. I don't understand the "8" year old comment....and both were a bit fake. McCain is more amoderate than conservative and Obama is more liberal than centrist.
My point was just that there have been worse times in our hisory. I am aware of his age.
Another example of a bad time was in the Carter era with the interestet rates, unemployment, etc. Our nation has seen worse and we have pulled through.
Letterman wasn't around in the 60's.....he's never seen anything quite this bad?? Disingenuous!! Vietnam?? Civil Rights?? Assasinations of two Kennedys?? Martin Luther King Jr. Murder...and he's never seen things so bad????
Is there anything around you that indicates Obama is doing a great job?? Are has your brain fallen out of your head? Obama is destroying your entire economy, raising unemployment, and trying to make government a dictatorship.
People like you are starting to really frighten me.
You have to take the good with the bad, unfortunately. Obama has done a good job shoring up our relationship with the global community, but domestically, it remains to be seen whether his tax-and-spend proposals will have a positive effect. And he has broken more than a few campaign promises in just the first few months of his term. Pretty packaging and presentation won't work forever.
Hardly doing a great job? He is doing a STUNNING job. he has reopened communication with other nations, sent troops to afghanistan and pakistan where the real war is..The stock market has gone up 40% since he came into office and all economic indicators are slowing their fall or beginning to improve. in WHAT is he not doing a good job?
Wait a minute... Sarah Palin is... brilliant? Oh, honey, you can't be serious! I'd rather have Jessica Simpson in the White House (no offence, Jessica, I think you are adorable). The time for a female president or vice president is long overdue but the thought of that female being Sarah Palin makes me want to curl up in the fetal position fully clothed in the bath tub with the cold water running while chanting "Find a happy place, find a happy place..."

as someone not from the US (Australia) it immediately occured to me 'holy fuck, hes so hold, if he dies (god forbid) that moronic creationist will be president'
The whole election no one listened to McCain because character assassination of Palin is what the game was about. Now everything about Obama's past ties is so legitimate it's scary.
I don't understand why people think Palin had anything to do with McCain's failiure. Every mistake of the way was done by McCain. I love how they're out to stump Palin with stupid trivia to prove she's an idiot, but not one of them tried to drill Obama with anything. They wouldn't even touch him.
seriously, did you even follow politics when she after she was announced? For a while she raised people's opinions of the Republican running mates. Then, closer and closer to the election, her popularity went drastically downhill. I have talked to everyone I know, and have heard many people on camera, publically, and they have all said that if McCain passed away, they would be scared shitless to have Palin running this country. She is the MAIN reason McCain lost.
I am a supporter of Obama and as I am watching this I am pretty impressed with McCain here. I had not seen this before. Palin, Bush, and his age screwed this guy...

Get your facts straight. America loved PALIN, HATED MCCAIN! SARAH PALIN saved McCain from a landslide loss. Sarah Palin is the ONE REASON McCain came as close as he did. Don't forget that!
Sarah Palin rallies brought the roof down EVERY single time! I saw more energy in the crowds at Palin rallies than I ever saw in any of Obama's during the campaign.
Even Obama's emaculation ceremony started losing people after half of it was over, and people didn't even know when to cheer.
mmmmmmmmm emaculation???? what the hell is that????
face it, the people who attended sarah palin rallies were desperate people who wanted some sort of assurance that their party's nomination of an old fossil would somehow be countered with a young supporting leader who could lead in times of need. when they realized they were about to get someone even less unqualified than obama, they cheered not out of energy, but desperation.
No. They cheered Palin because she's everything that you think she's not. Basically, you go with this mob mentality that is out to destroy her, but the woman is brilliant. And a successful governor.
I agree, 50% of Republican's want Sarah Palin to run in 2012 and 100% of Democrats want Sara Palin to run in 2012,lol. Did you say she's brilliant? Men love the feeling she gives them in their crotch, not her intelligence, lol. You are so pathetic and the perfect reason why Republican's are a diminishing party.
On the contrary, you represent this gestapo of intimidation in order to make intelligent debate go under the rug. Your only argument is "you're a man, all men are carnally minded dogs, and a woman who is beautiful can't be smart."
You're proven yourself sexist to both men and women. Also, the "your party is fading" is such an immature tactic that doesn't reflect history. Power has gone back and forth, because one party doesn't seem to be doing well. You better face that Obama is failing
What? I think beautiful woman are smart, just not this one, lol. She went to 6 different colleges to get a bachelor's degree in journalism? Hmmm, if she was 65 and 300lbs. I doubt you'd be on here defending this moron. You really think Obama is failing? Quit listening to Fixed News and Sean Hannity, I see all you do is recite their talking points, you are such a tool, lol.
Uhhhh, unemployment rising, trillions of dollars lost, getting no results, predicting more doom and gloom, rapidly expanding government, poll numbers lowering...... get a clue. I don't even listen to Hannity and I know this.
Yeah, you idiots make up a new lie about Palin every minute. Just tune you out because you're all mouth and no proof.
You tune me out b.c I speak the truth and you can't handle it.. You do realize who got us in this recession right?Your man G.W,lol. You talk about how parties change power, which is true, but you forget to mention a thing called facts. You should also realize that the difference this election year is that minorities are becoming the majority in America and the Republican party is becoming the party of older, white southern men. Libertarians might soon take over the GOP, wake up you tool!
It's not that people hated Palin. They were trained to hate her by the media.
Look at Dan Quayle. One of the smartest most intellectual people I ever met. He messes up the word Potato at a children's event, and BAMMO!! He's called the stupidest person in the world by the media, and they scorch him over something like that.
Palin's no different. They don't like how she talks. She sounds like a real person. BAMMO! She's an idiot. One bad interview. BAMMO! Idiot.
Really? Well John McCain wanted to buy all the bad mortgages in the country. It doesn't get more communist than that. The government owns your house???
So hold on... your McCain admitted to A) wanting to distribute wealth and B) Knowing citizens converstations without their knowledge or approval... Yeah, a true American Mccain is.
I'm not talking about you listening in on peoples conversations you moron, I am talking about the government assuming the right to unlawfully drop in on our phone calls and track us in our daily lives, its called big brother, get familiar with it, because it is reality, and a very evil thing.
I'd listen in other people's phone calls too. if given the right chance. I'd also go around telling other people what I heard. I'm sure you've probably thought about that, too.
both of you guys are the modest idiotic right-wing morons I've ever heard, Obama shows that there is still some hope fro this god-awful country and McCain looks like a fat pasty vampire
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I agree. America made a huge mistake not electing John McCain, and it is starting to wake up after the hangover from the Obama party, now that mr. stalin is showing his true stripes (hammer and scythe).
Mccain is 5'7" and no one seems to know Cruises exact height. he claims 5'9" But I think 5'8" is a good bet. Yeeeah, Tom cruise is short jokes..are pretty lame.
He's so disingenuous, like a bad slick salesman. he reminds of me of William Macy in Fargo or Lemmon in Glengarry Glenross. I don't understand why he kept saying we have to change in Washington when he's been a part of it for 25 years. Come on. I'm glad that weasel lost.
this is why the republican party lost congress, the presidency, and why it will lose in the next elections. It's leaders are old, wealthy, awkward, and appear to be completely out of touch with an increasingly more informed public. Palin was propped up as an extremely transparent ploy to defeat this archetype, and was, quite frankly, too dumb for her party to allow her on too many talk shows.
Until the party can put up stronger candidates than any of those who ran, it is destined to lose.
The republicans were the ones who kept the nation inline. I bet you failed to realize democrats have been in control since 2006, right around the time when a democrat-controlled congress allowed the banks to give out the mortgages thus causing the economic crisis.
I bet you also failed to realize Bush made attempts to put very tight regulations on the banks which could of prevented the economic crisis.
SO YEAH, LETS HAVE THE SAME PEOPLE WHO RAPED OUR ECONOMY COME INTO POWER!
Economic problems can arise VERY fast, within months.
It is clear you know nothing about economics.
It is also clear you don't know what you are talking about. In total, the USA spent $500 Billion on the Iraqi War, it is a lot, but that is not even close to a small FRACTION of our full economy.
1. Again, the war did cost money but it did not have a noticeable impact on our economy. Infact, we haven't even spent a small fraction on the war yet.
2. Congress has more power then the president, not vice versa. The crisis started with Congress giving out mortgages to people who were unable to pay it, thus racking up many bad mortgages and destroying the economy. George Bush advised the new Congress not to do this.
my god, this is so awkward to watch, can you imaging granpa john as president saying, "i screwed up". we need a LEADER not a viagra spokesperson in the executive office
i hate this guy.

He never explained it except to say that he was 8 years old. when Ayers was bombing. The question wasn't how old he was , but why would he befriend a guy who in recent years expressed that he wasn't sorry and wished he had done more.
The guy was turned away from entering Canada if I'm not mistaken
ChurchillTea 2 years ago 2
Did you have a strong politican opinion when you were 8 ? Letterman even though i admit he was patisan showed Mc Cain up to be the fake that he was. It was obvious that he chose Palin to get the popular younger vote, and dave pointed out this fact
razorbright 2 years ago
i'm sorry. I don't understand the "8" year old comment....and both were a bit fake. McCain is more amoderate than conservative and Obama is more liberal than centrist.
ChurchillTea 2 years ago
Letterman being liberal or not, doesnt matter, he asked questions McCain couldnt answer and McCain made himself look bad, not letterman!

My point was just that there have been worse times in our hisory. I am aware of his age.
Another example of a bad time was in the Carter era with the interestet rates, unemployment, etc. Our nation has seen worse and we have pulled through.

Is there anything around you that indicates Obama is doing a great job?? Are has your brain fallen out of your head? Obama is destroying your entire economy, raising unemployment, and trying to make government a dictatorship.
People like you are starting to really frighten me.
dogeymon83 2 years ago
i don't know if i would go that far, dictatorship is a strong word. that being said, Obama is hardly doing a great job, especially on economy.
ndsong 2 years ago 3
You have to take the good with the bad, unfortunately. Obama has done a good job shoring up our relationship with the global community, but domestically, it remains to be seen whether his tax-and-spend proposals will have a positive effect. And he has broken more than a few campaign promises in just the first few months of his term. Pretty packaging and presentation won't work forever.
TuNnL 2 years ago

They wouldn't even touch him.
dogeymon83 2 years ago
seriously, did you even follow politics when she after she was announced? For a while she raised people's opinions of the Republican running mates. Then, closer and closer to the election, her popularity went drastically downhill. I have talked to everyone I know, and have heard many people on camera, publically, and they have all said that if McCain passed away, they would be scared shitless to have Palin running this country. She is the MAIN reason McCain lost.

Get your facts straight. America loved PALIN, HATED MCCAIN! SARAH PALIN saved McCain from a landslide loss. Sarah Palin is the ONE REASON McCain came as close as he did. Don't forget that!

Oh my God. You think people LOVED PALIN. I like her, but I am one of the only people I know who does.

Sarah Palin rallies brought the roof down EVERY single time! I saw more energy in the crowds at Palin rallies than I ever saw in any of Obama's during the campaign.
Even Obama's emaculation ceremony started losing people after half of it was over, and people didn't even know when to cheer.
dogeymon83 2 years ago
mmmmmmmmm emaculation???? what the hell is that????
face it, the people who attended sarah palin rallies were desperate people who wanted some sort of assurance that their party's nomination of an old fossil would somehow be countered with a young supporting leader who could lead in times of need. when they realized they were about to get someone even less unqualified than obama, they cheered not out of energy, but desperation.
musicalbasics 2 years ago
No. They cheered Palin because she's everything that you think she's not. Basically, you go with this mob mentality that is out to destroy her, but the woman is brilliant. And a successful governor.
dogeymon83 2 years ago
I agree, 50% of Republican's want Sarah Palin to run in 2012 and 100% of Democrats want Sara Palin to run in 2012,lol. Did you say she's brilliant? Men love the feeling she gives them in their crotch, not her intelligence, lol. You are so pathetic and the perfect reason why Republican's are a diminishing party.
fee316 2 years ago 4
On the contrary, you represent this gestapo of intimidation in order to make intelligent debate go under the rug. Your only argument is "you're a man, all men are carnally minded dogs, and a woman who is beautiful can't be smart."
You're proven yourself sexist to both men and women. Also, the "your party is fading" is such an immature tactic that doesn't reflect history. Power has gone back and forth, because one party doesn't seem to be doing well. You better face that Obama is failing
dogeymon83 2 years ago
What? I think beautiful woman are smart, just not this one, lol. She went to 6 different colleges to get a bachelor's degree in journalism? Hmmm, if she was 65 and 300lbs. I doubt you'd be on here defending this moron. You really think Obama is failing? Quit listening to Fixed News and Sean Hannity, I see all you do is recite their talking points, you are such a tool, lol.
fee316 2 years ago
Uhhhh, unemployment rising, trillions of dollars lost, getting no results, predicting more doom and gloom, rapidly expanding government, poll numbers lowering...... get a clue. I don't even listen to Hannity and I know this.
Yeah, you idiots make up a new lie about Palin every minute. Just tune you out because you're all mouth and no proof.
dogeymon83 2 years ago
You tune me out b.c I speak the truth and you can't handle it.. You do realize who got us in this recession right?Your man G.W,lol. You talk about how parties change power, which is true, but you forget to mention a thing called facts. You should also realize that the difference this election year is that minorities are becoming the majority in America and the Republican party is becoming the party of older, white southern men. Libertarians might soon take over the GOP, wake up you tool!
fee316 2 years ago 2
What? Palin is that you?
fee316 2 years ago
It's not that people hated Palin. They were trained to hate her by the media.
Look at Dan Quayle. One of the smartest most intellectual people I ever met. He messes up the word Potato at a children's event, and BAMMO!! He's called the stupidest person in the world by the media, and they scorch him over something like that.
Palin's no different. They don't like how she talks. She sounds like a real person. BAMMO! She's an idiot. One bad interview. BAMMO! Idiot.

this is why the republican party lost congress, the presidency, and why it will lose in the next elections.
Rochard021 3 years ago
McCains hilarious
KingKoopa42601 3 years ago
The republicans were the ones who kept the nation inline. I bet you failed to realize democrats have been in control since 2006, right around the time when a democrat-controlled congress allowed the banks to give out the mortgages thus causing the economic crisis.
I bet you also failed to realize Bush made attempts to put very tight regulations on the banks which could of prevented the economic crisis.
SO YEAH, LETS HAVE THE SAME PEOPLE WHO RAPED OUR ECONOMY COME INTO POWER!
surgedark 3 years ago
the dems have been in majority for 2 going on 3 years. the republicans were been in majority for six plus years before that
if you think all our economic problems are a result of the last two years...get fucking real
wonder how were paying for a q10 billion dollar a month war
Damnright86 3 years ago
Economic problems can arise VERY fast, within months.
It is clear you know nothing about economics.
It is also clear you don't know what you are talking about. In total, the USA spent $500 Billion on the Iraqi War, it is a lot, but that is not even close to a small FRACTION of our full economy.
Get real.
surgedark 3 years ago
question: are you sayin the financial crisis is a dirrect result of democratic majority for the last 2 years?
question #2:are you saying the war is not a major factor in the failing economy?
Damnright86 3 years ago
1. Yes
2. The war did not cause the financial collapse, sure it wasted some money but not on the scale to destroy it.
surgedark 3 years ago
being that the war started 'wasting money ' four years before the democratic majority...
I would say that both democrats and republicans had something to do with it
question: how is it that the financial crisis took place under a republican president
even with the democrats being in majority?
republicans were in majority under clinton..we had conflict
still no war, no crisis
also why is it that gas prices soared under Bush?
answer these without the usual finger pointing
Damnright86 3 years ago
George Bush advised the new Congress not to do this.
surgedark 3 years ago
okay, since you know so much about economics
name two other areas where we spent more than 500 billion .on one thing...other than the situation overseas
