I was stationed in Germany back in '85. I received my new '86 Shelby Charger with 12 miles on it.The cat wasn't installed because Germany didn't have unleaded gas yet. I got stares from the Germans first of all because it was so unique. Secondly it kicked the Beemers and Audi asses until I reached top end. Then the smallest VW Rabbit would just walk away. Best time (and most foolish) was a race in the city with a Porsche 928. A total toss up. The Porsche guy loved it. Adrenaline pure.
@DakotaRTinTX Btw, abusing it the way I did, I went through two clutches and three transmissions. All under the 50,000 mile warranty. I know these aren't Chargers as we all remember them but this was one badass little car for practically peanuts. The Z28 and Trans Am weren't putting out hardly any more horses and weighed like 500 more lbs.
@DUSHANMANGRUE - that depends on a few things actually. What's the year? What color is it? Any rust? Any modifications? What engine is in it? I bought mine for $1700 almost 4 years ago now and its doin ok. I'm actually in the market for a new one so anyone let me know if there are any really nice ones out there!
i never asked him what the year is or wht type engine it has or anything, it used to be black but its rusted quite alot, also its bone stock, as far as any mods....pretty sure the only thing ever changed on it would be oil or tires......im guessing its starting to sound like a bad deal then
I bought one of these brand new back in 86. I loved that car but the thing constantly broke down one me. Seemed to keep eating alternators, went thru 3 of them. The AC broke too. It was fast as hell though, kicked a lot of ass racing. Got tired of it breaking down so got rid of it after 3 years. I think I paid like 9500 for it new.
An 86 Shelby Charger was my first car. I learned to drive stick on that car. Man I miss that thing. The trans went one day and I got rid of it. If I had the mechanical skills I do now back then I would be driving it today. I loved that car!
yeah i love this car i have an 86 charger its stock no turbo and an auto but at least i can tell my friends with there shitty cars i have a charger lol
I just to have one in high school back in the early 90's... Man that was a lady catching car... Nice to see one in such great shape still... How much for it??? :P
I keep my Dodge in the Garage. I've got a 3500 w/ a Cummins in it that I really enjoy a lot too. Keep her clean & have lots of enjoyment w/ your Shelby! Nice!
i personally really hate 69 and on and dont really think these cars are too much charger. they are really cool cars and so much fun to drive but they should have been like the shelby omni coupe or something.... they just done seem like chargers to me. but i do love the 68 chargers and 66-67... those are just the best years of the car to me... i dont like the long tail lights of 69 and onward and 69 has that really ugly center grille piece. 66-68 were the best to me at least :-)
@Henzzman I had a 69 R/T with a 440 and I really loved it. I think back in the 80's I really didn't have as much of an appreciation for these 80's model Chargers as I do now. Especially since you never see them anyway. These are two different Chargers from two different eras and I think they both were great cars in their own ways
Nice car. I had a 87 in silver and blue. Couldn't keep a transaxle in it so I had to quit driving it. Went through 2 in less than a year. But I loved it.
damn right the mustang blows... yeah this isnt the greatest car in the world and i dont clame it to be... but it is a fun car and easy to work on... and nice and cheap! lol plus its a car that not many people know about so its cool to get looks from people going "well what the hell is that?" lol
I have an 85 Charger and an 86 Shelby Charger. One being for parts of course. I have been working on it for 3 years now. will be nice when it's all done.
awesome man... i plan on keeping this car for a long time and completely reworking it... like taking it down to bare metal and repainting and fixing rust and such... complete resto... some day lol
68 charger r/t is the best in my opinion... i hate the split grill on the 69 and the rear lights... 68 just looks cooler to me... but thats my opinion
Actually the best second generation charger would have to be 1970, the 440 sixpack was definitely the best engine option of that year (aside from the hemi)
But then again everyone has their own taste. Anyway, nice car, I have a few questions though. How good on gas is it? What's the performance and Whats the price range?
the gas is actually pretty good... it runs on premium but all turbo cars should... it gets around 24 mpg on highway if i dont have too much fun with boosting lol... and performance is great for a car from the 80s! not sure about 0-60 times but im sure you can find those somewhere. and i got my car for $1700 and its stripped out and has a cage but stock engine and has some problems... but every so often you can come across one thats in perfect condition for about $8000
omg i had this exact car color too damn with the ground effects kit!!! i hated this car sorry but it broke down all the time first it was the alternator,, then the voltage regulator,, then the front axels uggggggg
LOL yea it was my first car, so it does bring back some memories,, i got it in 1991 wow,, the axels broke all the time, but you couldent kill the engine. lol
Sweet car. There a very few of these left. Keep it alive. These cars are the ultimate giant killers. And they look like nothing else on the road..especially with the crazy stripe package that could have only come for the eighties.
80s turbo cars are the shit. i just got a 1988 thunderbird turbo coupe last week and im gonna get some video of it up maybe this week. classics like these are such a blast to own because they are fast, handle well, and get great MPGs. the only downside is reliability.
and what do you drive? a honda civic with a fartcan on it? or are you maybe some douche who thinks the mustang is the end all be all awesomest car ever... either way... your opinion means nothing. :-)
why do stupid people insist on commenting on videos they shouldnt be watching in the first place... i dont clame this to be the fastest car in the world dickweed... i like mopars and these are rare cars that almost no one knows about... and i love audis... great cars for rally racing. these were fast for their time for being so cheap... plus they are not hard to get up to some pretty good horsepower numbers...
You know what's unbelievably rare about this generation of Chargers? Plymouth made two Turismos with the Barracuda nameplate.
It was to be Plymouth's version of this (the 'Cuda name was legendary in the '60s and '70s, as was Dodge's Charger marque), the Shelby Charger, but Carroll Shelby made Chrysler halt production of the '86 'Cuda, owing that as a Plymouth it would cheapen the exclusive nature of his tuned Dodge model.
i remember reading an article about hat recently... they were white with red stripes... would have been cool if they actually produced it, but i can see where Shelby was coming from...
One was painted white with red stripes and the other was painted red with black stripes. The red-painted car also had a black interior. The details on the whereabouts of the red one haven't been determined as of 2000.
What's it like driving with the rear stripped out? Given that so much percent of the weight is in the front I'd think it would be dangerous. I'm thinking about stripping out my NSRT
its not bad at all actually... i dont notice much of a difference. and in winter its not bad at all if you just know how to drive a car... back end doesnt slide too much. i like the stripped out rear end... its louder and sounds tinny inside but its all worth it... plus it needed to be done with the roll cage installed... it wouldnt fit past the rear seats... i would recommend it... plus it helps with people mooching rides! lol
they are around there... they arent terribly fast stock but they wooped the crap out of the mustangs and camaros of the day... and there are plenty of hop up parts for these things. the guy who owned it before me had it at 407 wheel horsepower on pump gas and it ran a 10.3 in the quarter... it was a wicked car...
i had a 1980 omni 024(same body style) with the race package, but the 1.7l. I later removed it and dropped a 2.5t in it. Stripped the car down to close to 1800lbs. That shit flew
Man sweet ride....My ol man gave me one of these when I was 15 after is wife blew it up. She hit a pot hole and put a hole on the oil pan and kept driving..... too bad I was 15 I knew nothing on about how sweet it would be to own one today.
