  • I was a 12 year boy when I first heard this. It was all over the radio and while I had no clue as to what she was sing about, the melody put a smile on my face. I found this about 1 hour ago and am listening to it for the first time in 42 years. I'm 53 now,my marriage sucks. I am living the lyrics and have been crying for the last hour.

  • Why are all the best songs the ones that never are the radio anymore?

  • another classic

  • this song is about being drafted in the army..they got married but he had to leave for the army...left her with a band of gold

  • @ladylibra2 uh, no libra... either one of two things - he was gay OR he was impotent that night... for those that disagree my proof is in the lyrics "and love me, like you TRIED before"

  • Just 520,557 views? Why are they only counting my views?

  • wow my new favorite song. I remember my father playing this in the 80s driving down I95 while he sipped a heineken.

  • awesome song, they don't make music like this anymore

  • Just a few seconds and I'm flashed back to ten years old at the city pool with this playing over the loudspeakers they always had Top 40 playing on. Hot, sunny Central California with all my little friends and no cares. Damn, I'm getting choked up.

  • Was the groom gay? sounds like it.

  • @TDSouledOut1 Right On! I bought this in 1970, along with Chairmen of the Board etc. The beginnings of my magical excursion into the wider world of Soul music, beyond my tiny Tamla Motown and Reggae collection... :-D

  • I wish this would play at a club somewhere, because I would DEFINITELY get up and dance to this.

  • im a 16 year ild skateborder and this is a tune

  • i wonder if Frodo Baggins thought about this song when he held ''the one'' ring?? food for thought!? haha

    Hot lady

Remember this song well on AF Radio listening through Gatun Locks, baby sahn sailing on to SE Asia so long ago

Still young and fast -- never stop -- run til the end

    Love music forever!!!

  • He was obviously gay and just married her for the money.

  • I love this song and I'm old enough to remember when it came out. Would somebody please tell my daughter that this song is about an impotent man who can't perform on his wedding night?

  • Separate is spelled wrong

  • We loved this SOUL classic in the UK way back in 1970. Freda was at Number One after the immortal Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' 'Tears of a Clown'. Dear God did we have taste back then. Holland-Dozier-Holland penned this fabulous track under assumed names. Check out Freda's 'Bring the Boys Back', 'Cherish' and 'Deeper and Deeper'. Simply awesome SOUL.

  • Been brought up with this type of music and I still love it at the age of 14. This is proper music.

  • Love this depressing song! It's the best! "We slept in separate rooms" hits me hard!

  • wow. what a song!

  • i was in 6th-7th grade when i 1st heard this song ! Man i had and still have good taste in music ! not this senseless gobleligook justin beaver crap !

  • Love this song, new all the words by the time I was 11...lol, missing my mother right now...

  • Stunning song, stunning vocal, there just ain't no classy artist like her today, sadly it's mainly sleazy artist who sell themselves out with hidden agendas & make bad role models for young people, what a great era of music back then, just enjoy & remember the good memories of music from the heart that meant something.

  • I used to work @walgreens and we had a decent selection of music playing at this store. This was one of the songs, I had never heard it before. It became one of my favs. Didn't know the artist but just googled some of the lyrics and found it here! So happy:)

  • Damn i have always loved this song

  • Wow! I finally found this song after first hearing it about 7 years ago, and I could never make out the title or who sang it. But today I was in my local vitamin shoppe and an employee looked it up on his phone. Of all the songs over the years that I did not know who sang them, well I found them out but this one is one of the last remaining and now I can hear it, awesome, I just got that rush!!..Beautiful song.

  • definately a case of the oldies are the best with this tune

  • i cant figure out why i love this song so much..... its not like i can relate to the lyrics but it just means so much about a particular time in my life... i can remember riding in the back of mums car as a kid when this song was on the radio

  • I'm 24...and this the music I grew up on...yeah I listened to Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, and other 90's music.....but the oldies always have a place in my heart!

  • This song is weirder than most people probably realize :)

  • @myacidsmiles lol. i know right. youtube drama is so annoying. lol.

  • Please, NOBODY cares how old you are and does being younger and listening to this song make you better???? its not a complex song and does not require higher intelligence or musical ability to interpret!!!!! ARRRGGHHHHH, and open your ears and you will find brilliant music nowadays!

  • @billpwn Haha! I was just thinking this as well. Look at almost any old song on this site and there's a comment like "I love this song and I am 12". Whoopy bloody doo!

  • I Love This Song And I'm 16! So Beautiful! It's So Much Better Than Music Nowadays (:

  • @nenejoy9 you'll realize youngen that the music that was made back in the 50's 60's and 70's all held so much meaning and was written/ played from the heart. all expressions they wanted to show other people. now all music is is a business, making money and getting flashy things, people that call themselves musicians when they pay people to write their songs. nothing is the same

  • @nenejoy9 I am 22 and born in 89 and I love the music from the 50-80s

  • @nenejoy9 Totally agree with you and I'm only a year older :D

  • YEP!!

1969!! The END of the 60's!!

    Loving life!

  • YEP!!

This was OUR MUSIC if you were into the early 60's

I was lucky enough to dance to this song in the teen clubs , in High school

    O_YELL!!!

LUCKY is what I call this, to be Jr High then on to high school in the early 60's with all these songs out there, LUCKY, LUCKY!!

    Cynthia

  • @cynthia6637 I thought that this about 1969 or 1970. Great song.

  • YES!

    Just a Band of gold!!

  • Oh, my God! This song kicks so much ass! That constant drum in the background...ahhh. I was drunk one time, and when this came on the radio I banged my head like it was AC/DC or something.

  • This is great stuff...but l think all era's have fantastic music and it's about finding the music that suits you. If you're not finding some brilliant contemporary music then you're just not looking...so many brilliant artists about there isn't the time to hear it all. I don't think the world has ever made much sense but good music helps to make it better.

  • This song was number one the Saturday I went to my first disco and picked up my first girlfriends. All five of them. We communicated by snail mail. Come a long way ain't we?

  • This song was number one the Saturday I went to my first disco and picked up my first girlfriends.

  • Just got home from Nam when I first heard Freda Payne and the Motown beat on KHJ (boss radio ) out in LA and then I was sent to Kelly AFB in San Antonio and heard her again on KONO 86 with Bruce Hathaway and on 55 KTSA with Charlie Brown..Both were big into Motown back then..........

  • i always wondered with this song, like whats wrong with this dude ??? is he gay??, not that theres anything wrong with that, but he shouldnt have married her !!! anyway great song always turn this shit up on the radio

  • @FozzytheRyan sorry didnt read down further, guess im not the only one, thanks for the vietnam interepritation

  • I love the guitar riffs in this song!

  • @pbatommy yep, you're right....think it had a bit of a run around then. Think Joe South used it too. The song was a break song for me at the time.

  • Just because gay has become the new subject around the west for the past 8 years or so doesn't mean this song is about homosexuality.

If you listen to the song again she quotes 'you took me from my mother that I never knew'. It could well be that this man adopted her from a baby and raised her as his daughter and unfortunately fell in love with her adopted. OR he raised her as his own and never adopted her. Thats why he couldn't sleep with her and they stayed in separate rooms!

  • @lovethecaribbean1 OMG That's the sickest explanation i've heard yet. But you have the word wrong. Kinda. He took her from her mother. (period!!!) She had never known the love of any other. (period. i.e. She was a virgin) The lines run together for the sake of rhyme and poetry and music. But he didn't take her from a mother that she had never known. Sorry

  • @fushiamermaid

I don't need for the likes of you to tell me about rhyme poetry and music. The song says you took me from a mother I had never known. Yet you say he never took her from a mother she had never known! I guess your new at this

  • It isn't about being gay, it is about Vietnam. Like many couples, they got married right before he deployed (they slept in separate rooms because he was on base). In the middle of the song, she is yearning for him to return. By the end of the song, she has found out that he was killed. It is called SUBTLETY and METAPHOR.

  • @visirith

    Rubbish

  • @visirith thanks, thats a good take on this one !!

  • @visirith Thank you. Since childhood, i was confused about why he left w/o consumating the marriage. Thank you.

  • i love this song and I haven't even been born yet.

  • Remember this when it came out in 1970

  • I remember this from the second grade.

  • I love this song, I sing this song, I believe in this song....but I still believe that it's all about BEING GAY....."that night on our honeymoon, we stayed in separate rooms"....what else could it be....i don't believe she was afraid of sex.......i believe he was GAY......

  • @gtranger1 One of the cowriters of this song, Ronald Dunbar, has dismissed the claim that this song is about a gay man. He stated there was a part of the song they cut out that explained why he was in another room. You can believe this song is about a gay man, but it is not.

  • im in my mother's womb, and i love this song, I hope my mom's kidney's like freda payne

  • I'm 3 years old and i love this song. I usually crank up this tune when i'm playing with matches. What's with everyone saying how old they are? This song doesn't care how old you are!!

  • @WeirdsAGoodThing what do you want a medal? fuck off

  • @jacd2k9 What the fuck is your problem? Did I say I wanted any praise? No, I'm saying because people say kids nowadays only like new music. Nobody was saying any hate around here until you showed up. Asshole.

  • @WeirdsAGoodThing I hate kids like you so pretentious

  • @jacd2k9 Do you know me that you're saying I'm prententious? I could say you're incredibly rude (which right, is giving me the impression that you are) but I can't because I have no idea who the hell you are. I wasn't expecting anything from the comment, and you were the only person who had an issue with what I said. It's a comment box, I have the right of speech so I'll say what I want.

    Piss off.

  • @WeirdsAGoodThing : don't respond to sicko's caught in the grip of Bestiality. Just ignore him and pray for his dog to pass quickly so the horror will stop.
