People native to areas where these things live do not have a medic or hospital at hand so they have been known to plinge their hands in boiling water whwen bitten. Yes, it is a centipede, probably of the Scolopendera family. No, it is not entirely harmless. It's venom wouldn't land you in a hospital (unless you were allergic), but being from the family of the most robust, aggressive centipedes, it would probably ruin at least a few hours out of your day. Not picking it up with your hands was a wise decision.

As far as pinning it with a stick, that did make me flinch, but it's understandable under the circumstances. They are FAST and sometimes aggressive.

I get those in my place sometimes. They usually arent too big by the time I find them, but they do sting something fierce. Best way to deal with them since they aren't in any danger of extinction is to just smash them on the wall or surface that you found it on. Make sure you use something other than your hand, they're quick to turn around and sting.
