  • waowww!!!

    this helped great, sarge!

im 13, but im already training for the marines!

  • You said you aren't allowed to sag in the middle as an authorized rest position... incorrect. FM 21-20 states "An altered, front-leaning rest position is the only authorized rest position. That is, you may sag in the middle or flex your back. When flexing your back, you may bend your knees, but not to such an extent that you are supporting most of your body weight with your legs." Just trying to let everyone be clear on the regs.

  • So u want to keep your eblows in or can you have them facing outward

  • can u really build mass doing push ups and pull ups and dips

  • Is it important to look forward when doing push-ups?

  • whats your hobby, push ups?

  • got one more year till im goin im goin on 16 as i speak... cant wait till then WOAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @nationalguard: Where was this video filmed at?

  • I never thought they'd take Bruce Willis to do Army Physical Fitness Test.

  • im aproxamently gonna be shiped to bacic im may whats the best way to get in shape by then?

  • @lifeisbeautifulbysix

Feel free to visit our website and check out our Fitness page.

  • He makes it look so damn easy lol

  • How important is is that I keep my elbows close to my torso during the action? Does it matter?

  • since im 14 180 pounds what can i do to help prepare for enlistment?

  • @mbc14k,

Please visit our website for more information.

  • @mbc14k how are you 180 pounds im 14 and im like 115

  • @ContainedMax It has alot to do with height, genetics and how much body fat/muscle a person has. I am 14 and im 6' 1'' and 168, i have barely any fat on me, i am at around 10% body fat. Muscle weighs more than fat, ( 1 pound of muscle is less mass than one pound of fat) hence why you ( other people ) can weigh more and be skinny. :)

  • Okay so if a fat guy passes all the tests he can still join the army?

  • @Hm0ngYexus There are height and weight requirements to join the Army.

  • @Hm0ngYexus,

There are height and weigh requirements an applicant must meet.

  • @Hm0ngYexus yes

  • how many pushups are you required to do?

  • @MW2KILLAZ268 The amount of push ups required depends on your age and gender.

  • Sgt. Ken, I want to say Thank you! My whole life I' never could do a pushup but you inspired me to set a goal: a perfect pushup. Given that I'm female and well over 50 yrs old, my friends thought I was crazy. I worked with a great trainer & since I couldn't do even 1 pushup from my knees, he had me focus on negatives only. Two months later, I can do pushups! They aren't perfect - I'm still working toward that. Thank you! Next goal: pass the NG test even tho you guys wont take me. :p lol

  • How many push ups do females have to do for the Army Physical Fitness Test?

  • @FutureMissSoldier94

    Aim for more than 50.

  • I want to spend the next year getting in shape. But honest question, is 32 too old to get into the military? What have been your experiences with older guys signing up?

  • Damn...I weigh a bit more than your usual person(at around 105 kg) and it is difficult for me to do push ups with arms at that width. But when I do them a bit wider apart then I can do them much easier. Should I continue doing them like I do now or should I start practicing this way instead?

  • @Raiks Right now, you can do wide as you want to--- as long as you drop your shoulders at least even with your elbows. Starting at some point next year, later on when the new PFT goes into effect, you will have to have your hands close into your body, and drop your elbows to the rear. It's much more difficult for tall people (I'm 6'3"). I can do 65-70 on the old system, but am still struggling to get close to that on the 'upcoming' standard.

    -SGT, Active Duty.

  • waw! is the best explanation i ear!!! sorry my english

    saludos!

  • im glad they hve the (authorize rest position) lol

  • hey ken can u rest in the normal pusup position so like wen u come up from a push up and the position u would start doing ur push ups from?

  • I plan on joining in six months, I just started working out both my muscles and cardio, is six months enough time to get in shape for the Army?

  • @creepycody

    Sure it is!

  • @creepycody

...yes. You have enough time to get into killer shape...more than enough time in fact.

  • @creepycody

Not to mention that you'll probably be in the DEP for a good 6 AFTER you join. So yeah, You've got plenty of time.

  • Okay i am trying out for the Army... But i am having trouble doing Push ups sicne i have never really done them before... Since i was in grade six i had always wanted to be apart of the Infantry.. Can you please help me.. Like is there any way that i can learn to build up my strength? I would really appreciate it if you responded ASAP. Thank you.

  • I want to go into the Air Force like my brothers and father before me. So I have started to look up a bunch of work-out and physical fitness (USAF Approved) so I can get the hang of it before I go off into boot camp. I'm going to be adopting a 14 week training regiment before I sign up, mainly so that I know by the end if I can really commit to the AF or not. Videos like this are really helpful especially, they help avoid any confusions as to what the US military think is suitable.

  • I'm 15 and I think I can do about 25-30 or 35 push-ups. Is that... "good"?

  • I'm 15 and I think I can do about 25-30 or 35 push-ups. Is that... "good"? o.O

  • SSG Ken,

Last time I checked TC 3-22.20, the rest positions were sag in the middle or flex your back... "AN ALTERED, FRONT-LEANING REST POSITION IS THE ONLY AUTHORIZED REST POSITION. THAT IS, YOU MAY SAG IN THE MIDDLE OR FLEX YOUR BACK."

  • Hey SSGT Ken. I was wondering if i did a set of 10 push ups and sit ups every half hour, would it help improve my ability to perform push ups and sit ups?

  • @DanWYi,

That sounds like a great personal challenge! Let us know how it works out for you!

  • @nationalguard can u pls help i am trying to go to the marines and i am a fat ass guess u could say that i cant do pull ups and can barley do push ups wat can i do to get in shape quick fast ive started eating better just need to know some more tips!!!!

  • @j7j7j7j7j7j,

Dropping weight quick is unsafe and unhealthy, we do not recommend that you do so.

  • @DanWYi Based on personnal experience, I blocked at like 35 push-ups, even if I was doing a couple sets everyday. The only way I could increase this number is with weight lifting. After 5 months at the gym I can now do around 60. I hope it helps you.

  • When ever i try and do these i cant get my chest to down in a stright line with my legs, it just stays up in the start position. I can feel it work though.

  • What happens if in those two minutes you're doing as many push-ups as you can, but then your arms just give out, and you end up on the ground eating grass? Does the timer stop and I'm done? Or can I get back up and keep going? Sometimes I rest in the air butt position and keep going, but I guess I overdo it because I just end up collapsing. And I've peaked at 22, but I'm sure a few those were half-assed so probably more like 18 ....Pathetic, I know.

  • @JustMe8485,

If your arms give out and you're laying on the floor, the test stops there. The push-ups you completed are counted. There are two authorized resting positions so you don't have to keep doing your push-ups until your arms collapse.

  • he makes it look so damn easy

  • 1:28

Now, his arms are straight to the body, usualy people however bend their army so they go out on the sides, you know what i mean??

What kind of push up is army? Straight arms backward when going down or army bent to the side when going down?

  • i do them twice a week. im slaking

  • can i do this indoors, or do i need to do it in front of a hummer and two tanks outside?

  • hes so buff he could do pushups all day long.lol

  • Can I do pushups everyday? Or do a need to rest 1 or 2 days.

  • @mrpower328 You can do push-ups everyday! Keep in mind, that it is a good idea to have a day off occasionally to let your body rest!

  • @nationalguard Thanks for the info. Your videos are great.

  • @mrpower328 everyday

  • You are a ledge :)

  • i swear he gets bigger in every video haha

  • He has Cena arms

  • i am 14 years old and i can do 60 perfect pushups and i do it everyday is this good for me? and what is beter perfect pushups, regular or normal?

  • @faisy8 dont do them every day give 1 day recovery between them to let your muscles repair and a perfect push up is what you should do every time you do pushups

  • Hooah!

  • Staff Sergeant Ken you need to go regular Army they could use your PT knowledge. I ETS'd in 2008 let me just tell ya the unit I was in the PT was a joke, lot's of failures, sick call rangers and soldiers who just didn't care. These are great videos, keep putting them out.

  • Hooah

  • that's amazing how he is'nt brething heavy from those...

  • Nice!

  • the guy looks like my trainer *~*

  • great :D

  • i love how he's "demonstrating" a perfect pushup the whole time he's talking... god dang man

  • just a lil quetsion, how many pushups do you do?

  • Best to keep fit!@

  • jesus, talking so smoothly while doing fast yet smooth push-ups....this guy is really something lol

  • Heads up bro you can sag in the middle. It says so in the FM 21-20: "AN ALTERED, FRONT-LEANING REST POSITION IS THE ONLY AUTHORIZED REST POSITION. THAT IS, YOU MAY SAG IN THE MIDDLE OR FLEX YOUR BACK. WHEN FLEXING YOUR BACK, YOU MAY BEND YOUR KNEES, BUT NOT TO SUCH AN EXTENT THAT YOU ARE SUPPORTING MOST OF YOUR BODY WEIGHT WITH YOUR LEGS."

  • @eddylalo99,

That is an incredible start! Continue to watch Sergeant Ken Weichert's fitness videos and you'll be way ahead of the game as you get older! HOOAH!

  • @nationalguard excuse me but can u help me because since i have started doing push ups with my elbows in my left shoulder clicks when i go down do you know what could cause this and could it be just because i do them to often?

  • Sgt , I am 15 and I can do 46 Prush-ups in one minute and 58 pushups continuesly , is that a good start or what can I do to improve?

  • Good!

  • he does them hella fast, aint it better to take it slow?

  • Sgt, I got a 405 on my last APFT: 111, 121, and a 10:36. how do I get my sit ups faster? I feel like I'm stuck at around 120 and as for my push ups, I mainly use my chest muscles so should i train my triceps more or what? Thanks

  • Comment removed

  • On the Army Fitness test manual it says your arms must be parrallel to the ground when you do the down phase (going down). This sergeant says your elbows must go above your rib cage. Which is it? Or is he recommending you go down farther than just being arms parrallel to ground on downphase just to ensure that you can meet the army requirements (meaning going a bit farther than correct is insurance policy that you are well enough)?

  • @JZ2001JC I've always been told 90 degrees.

  • How many push ups would be considered a good number to start off with when one starts doing push ups? And by how many push ups should one go increasing by?

  • @rushgeddylee

You should work yourself up to at least the minimum requirements to pass the PT test, and preferably much more. If you are going to start working out, remember to make sure that you keep good form. You'll do a lot more push ups that what you need if you do them incorrectly.

  • @nationalguard thank you very much. im going to start working out now! =D

  • @nationalguard Hello sir, I started on the push up imrpovement routine of sgt ken but the problem is that I am not able to do more than 80 or 85 push ups and that too with 8 to 10 seconds break after each arm extension. I am 20 years old. Would you say that is alright or I need to change what I am doing? If yes, then what should I do?

  • @ravi00090

80-85 push ups is excellent. You may have hit a plateau and could slightly change up your work out, such as widening your grip or offsetting one hand. You are doing a great job and keep up the hard work!

  • @nationalguard Thank you, videos like this are an inspiration to people around the world. Keep uploading such vids, thank you :)

  • @nationalguard I can do 2000 consecutively

  • @ravi00090 try doing 100 star jumps and 5 minits of shadow boxing, thats cardio it will help u improve push ups elped me i could only do 30 nw i can do 60

  • @nationalguard what is the requirement to pass?

  • hey guys, i sometimes don't know if im doing a push up the right way. If your posture is slightly up or down just slightly, will it effect your results?

  • @SicilianStyle,

That should be fine as long as it not to drastic.

  • I've always had a question that I can't seem to find the answer to. Do my hands need to be parallel to each other? When I do my pushups my left hand seems to be up a bit further than my right hand is. Is that a problem?

  • And how do you know if you are getting low enough without watching your upper arms all the time??

  • @Sheik06,

Without watching your arms, just make sure your elbows form a 90 degree angle as you're going down.

  • @nationalguard But then i need to keep watching my elbows all the time? :s

  • how many do you need to pass the AFPT?

  • @callofduty8301947,

The required amount to pass will vary by age and gender. You can click on our "Talk to a Soldier" Tab to chat with a live Hero on Call Soldier who can provide you with your specific requirements.

  • get some!!!!!!

  • som ppl say if u do puchup slow is better if u do fast ??

  • @CubanBaby585

faster is better if you are just doing a test and want to get the most, slow otherwise

  • You looks like my programmer teacher :D He's almost as fit as you...

  • when i did full pushups my chest is so thick that it didnt look like i was going down all the way on my APFT even though i actually hit the ground after rep 5 to prove it but they only counted like 30 of my 50 reps. they dont allow you to take it again either God forbid a drill sergeant ever made a stupid mistake

  • what muscles does this acually work? i know its the arms but what muscles?

  • @MrgotPump dsad

  • @MrgotPump Your pectoralis majors, and your triceps.

  • this mr.clean look a like is no joke..

  • Brute!

  • I thought you were able to sag your back for a rest position.

    Quote from FM 21-20

"An altered, front-leaning rest position is the only authorized rest position. That is, you may sag in the middle or flex your back. When flexing your back, you may bend your knees, but not to such an extent that you are supporting most of your body weight with your legs. If this occurs, your performance will be terminated."

  • Your quote from Army Field Manual 21-20 is correct. This is a push-up TRAINING program. Sagging your back is a movement that is not recommended (contra-indicated). HOOAH!

  • It doesn't matter what's recommended. A soldier follows the regs or he doesn't.

  • Sagging of the lower back is a contra-indicated movement that will cause strain in the quadratus lumborum muscles. Although the FM 21-20 does allow it during the APFT as one of the authorized rest periods, it is not recommended. Keep in mind, that there is a difference between recommended movements and authorized actions.

  • I'll try it later. mmmmm k.

  • @JeremyPresley lol.
