What I don't understand is using those commercial size trucks as a basis for an Ambulance... European ambulances are usually built around a mid-to-large size van that's far more maneuverable and equipped with a 4 cylinder turbo diesel that gives a lot better performance compared to these battering rams :P
It's a matter of preference and location. Part of the reason European ambulances (type II cabs) are so small is because the streets of Europe are packed and hard to maneuver in with larger vehicles. Cities often use smaller ambulances than rural areas since hospitals are closer in city areas. If the nearest hospital is 30 minutes out, you'd want the extra room in the back to work with.
@ihmesekoilua I've ridden on both type II cabs and type III cabs (type III being one of the larger boxes), and I much prefer the type IIIs in my hometown where the nearest hospital is 20ish minutes away. I've also worked in areas where the nearest hospital is 5 minutes away and there we use a van (type II) cab and it made sense to do so.
The point is, the ambulance is built to service the area... larger for rural, smaller for city.
@thebridgeportkid1 If the patient was having a heart attack it's likely the local basic life support rig wouldn't wait around for the advanced life support rig. It's likely they would perform an ALS intercept on the way to the hospital. An ALS intercept is when an advanced life support vehicle meets up with a basic life support ambulance on the way to the hospital, sometimes on local roads, sometimes on highways. The gear is transferred quickly then transport continues
@Dufik1992 Yup brother, the model of the ambulance possibly "old" and heavy probably around 2-3 tons or more since the model is a type 1 heavy ambulance.. Not a typical type 1 midsize ambulance with a v8 engine. Also check the description, it said that it had respond OUTSIDE of its area of responsibility meaning the time to respond within the original area has increased by 2x plus traffic and passing by an intersection makes the respond time longer. Peace brother :)
It is not that it is slow, it is that the road and traffic conditions are such that the speed is limited. At about 10:20 into the video, they pass station 47 where the first due medic (which was on another call) is housed.
@Dufik1992 They were responding outside of their area which increases response times. As stated in the description, the local basic life support rig was dispatched as well. They likely arrived within 7 minutes of the dispatch which is a reasonable time. The guiding principle of EMS is to do no harm, and if we were to go double the speed limit, our risk of getting into an accident increases by at least quadruple, thereby increasing the chance of causing harm to ourselves or others.
The intersection is a busy one, and when you make the right turn out of the station, you are right in the traffic. It is not like the ambulance can be seen approaching from a distance, and there really is nowhere for the cars to go.
As an EMT myself with EVOC and having grown up on the very street Medic 25 passes at 2:00 , I can tell you with confidence that speed is the last thing this rig needs to be doing on Piscataway Road. It's notorious for speeders and drivers who just cannot do the very thing they're supposed to be doing. As an EVOC driver, I also appreciate the need to get to a call ALIVE. While in Europe, speedy responses may be the norm...we just don't have the roads to do it in the US. Sorry counterparts. :/
tydek07 very true we hold the same policy only 10 miles above the posted speed limit unless they r an active code blue. i hate that people think we need to rush rush rush all the time half the time the newer people as soon as they get a call just run for the BLS or ALS and not even pause to comprehend the call they r about to respond to lol
Funny thing is... in some states, it is only required to yeild to Blue-lights (police), but not red (rescue/fire), yet, in many counties, the fire-rescue units are county owned and therefore government vehicles which ought to mean they have right of way...
He could be going slow for a few reasons. It looks like he's driving a type I ambulance, they're big diesel trucks and aren't that quick. Also you have to ensure your own safety before you can ensure someone else safety. If you get into an accident on the way to a call, you just became the victim. You tied up another unit and your also not making it to your call. Having your sirens on don't make you the king of the road, you still have to stop at red lights and do the speed limit. If you get in
@FruityLoopsDj he's driving safe, this is a type I ambulance its a big diesel truck. theyre used to carry lots of heavy equipment. considering this is an EMS unit they are from the fire department
theres 3 kinds of ambulances in the US, type I, II, and III. Type I is this big diesel truck, Type II is the Van converted into an ambulance 'Vanbulance' lol theyre mainly used for transport, theyre smaller and quicker and can fit into smaller streets, Type III is the midsized everyday ambulance
With the road conditions, and the traffic situation, they were driving at a speed that is appropriate for conditions. Knowing those roads, and the drivers in the area, I would say they did a great job
I always find it funny when people on the opposite side of the road pull over but people on the side you're driving on keep on cruising down the middle like any other day or just pull over at the last second. It pisses me off so bad when people are too stupid to pull over for emergency vehicles when there's plenty of space!
If I'm driving with lights and sirens I ensure I've got a reason to even have them on. Meaning there is traffic that needs cleared, and I'm actually going faster than traffic. I've passed ambulances in my POV before while they were screwing around trying to find a house by driving lights and sirens. When you get close to the area, traffic can flow freely around you. No need to continue demanding the right of way.
@emt288 and so when there is a hidden drive and someone pulls out in front of you cause you didn't have your siren on and you have a wreck, then what? I agree when you get close to the location and are haveing a hard time finding the house to cut back to code 1, but if you were dispatched to run a code 3, then run it the whole way there. It may end up saving your life too.
@mezpaz i agree with emt288, he is actually correct. you're not supposed to run your lights all the time, only when you need to. a lot of times if the issue isnt serious lights wont be on. lights on usually only buys you 2 minutes
@emt288 so when there is a hidden drive and someone pulls out right in front of you cause you weren't running your siren and you wreck, then what? I agree if you are close to the location and are having trouble finding it, then cut back to code 1. But if you cut back to code 1 enroute to the call, you have to change your whole mind set about your driving.

why the fuck are ambulances in the us so damn slow. they should use mercedes vans just like every other normal country does... maybe it wouldnt take 13 mins to get somewhere
@GunzGonda Okay. ALS means advanced life support. So, There was probably an engine or rescue already on the scene, or BLS. So, they probably called in the ALS to administer a round of drugs. To sum it up, not that serious.
@dgkgamer81 thats not true, bls doesn't always wait for als. in this case 'diabetic low blood sugar emergency' bls wouldnt need als. in general an ambulance can carry: glucose, activated charcoal, aspirin, epinepherin. this patient needs glucose, and most of the time an emt will carry this in their jump bag depending on state protocols. its basically sugar, giving it to the patient will bring their blood sugar levels back to normal. also you could have them drink orange juice or eat cake icing
@GunzGonda this isnt a van ambulance. we have 3 types of ambulance typeI, II, and III. this is a type I. a van ambulance is a Type II and a Type III is the larger ambulance you will see mainly for 911 calls
At about 10:20 into the video, they pass the fire house on the left (Co 47) where the first due medic is housed. That medic was on another call, which is why Medic 25 had to travel that distance.
You guys drive slow.. And what is up with that not all cars move away?
In Norway, if you dont let an emergency unit pass you, they will send your license number to dispatch and you will get a HUUGE ticket. It is illegal to not let them pass when there is enough space to go to the side..
@megrune94 well iv drivven past a cupple of ambulances with flashing lights and sirenes and i still have my lisence so i dont really think they bother
@megrune94 i bet it is when i outrun them easely in my crap car on twisty roads with kindof medium saturday traffic, and still havent got a ticket for that or for the other times iv catched up with them on the motorway. still failed to give me a ticket.
@megrune94 this is a heavy type I ambulance it is also EMS which is controlled by the fire department, they use heqavy equipment. our type II ambulances are just like your van ambulances. paramedics in my area drive SUVs. last time i was on a call we went 90 mph the whole way there. so it really depends on the situaltion, driver and vehicle
@andycop.....In some states only police are the only vehicles that cars pull over for...I dont know if this is one but if it is the fire dept.. .. and so on dont have the right of way even if they have their emergency lights on they are just asking for the right of way
To the people who are saying the ambulance is too slow... There is no need to go flying down the road, just increases the risk of getting into an accident yourself. We (where I work) have a policy that states we can only go 10mph over the posted speed limit. Just remember, you're no help if you end up needing help.
Now, if this is only a medic unit, there is no need for the it being so big. Just remember that some services have fire/ems units and they are also carrying rescue gear on the truck
I don't know much about American law, but if you got a empty track just going 2 miles straight out with no cars, you can go a bit faster than the normal 35 mph IMO.
@tydek07 Also too an ambulance may be going slow due to traffic. There are so many ppl out there that don't know to pull right when an ambulance is approaching with siren and lights running. As for my county as well, we can only run 10 mph over the speed limit. However if conditions aren't allowable for this then I run slower. Ive done 35 mph before with lights and siren running, however it was snowing too.
This is an ALS ( Advanced Life Support) ambulance. It is used to transport patients as well as paramedics. In some counties the medics are in SUVs and all transports are done in BLS (basic) units with the medics riding with them, but PG does not do that
@keldfc you hear both from Europe and the US about Fire/EMS vehicles being involved in accidents while responding.
It's hard to compare european code 3 driving style with the american one, cause traffic reacts completly different: In the US they often stop at intersection, Q and airhorn running hot and cross traffic still doesn't stop, and in Europe we often can rush over red lights and intersections only by using hi-lo sirens
Sorry But i Dont See the Point in Ambulances that Size, They are Slow and the Manoeuvrability on them is Shocking i Prefer NHS's Mercedes Sprinters Ect.
@andy there is a federal law that says if u dont pull over for police, fire, ems you will get a nice little ticket and maybe some jail time i know in sc,usa you'll spend 6 months in jail for failure too yeild
But how will someone dish out the ticket? Unless there is police escorting the ambulance, then ambulance can't just pull over, get the guys info, then report him. You know what i mean? Who's going to give the ticket to the guy not moving over?
@andycop211 I believe there are such laws in most places, but unless you have a cop following the ambulance, there isn't anyone to catch the motorist and give them the ticket. IMHO they should just stick a high def wide angle video camera on the front of them, run the license plates and mail them the ticket.
@andycop211 Most countrys today got tickets if you dont move for a emergency viechal but then again should the ambulance personel go out and do the ticket? XD They dont got the time for that or call the police. :/ And there is plenty of stupid people in the trafic today in all countrys! Sorryfor bad english. :P
@andycop211 They can get a ticket. *Depending on what state you are in* Here, if you don't pull over for a EMS/FR Unit, they can call into dispatch and *if license plate is in view* call in a failure to yield.
@andycop211 We have 2 laws. Failure to stop for an emergency vehical, and if you get annopying ehough, we can LEGALY ram your car. Trust me, 5 ton ladder truck vs car, they move after the first "hint"
@andycop211 should be, but the law here states that us (fire dept, ambulance) or only asking for the right of way.. There for they don't have to move if they want to be an ass.. and trust me the road is full of those type of people. most of the time they get tired of the federal Q and move after some time!.
If there was already an engine and an ambulance onscene, why dispatch another ambulance to that location for a 13min drive? I can understand if the medical situation is that urgent that 2 more paramedics are needed, but in the end only one ambulance gets to transport the patient. I'd like to understand why and how many units are normally dispatched to medical calls.
@fopneus in my area depending on the call you will always get 2 Emt-basics on an ambulance. the fire department gets called for waste cleanup, car accidents, help lifting. paramedics (emt-p) in a 2 person crew SUV will get dispatched for unconscious, diabetic emergency, shock, drug overdose. one paramedic will then get into the back of the ambulance while the other one follows in the SUV to the hospital.
So we don't crash or get hit in the process of heading to the scene. How useful would an ambulance be if it's lying on its side in the middle of the road?
we have one of those huge trucks at my station it just looks like they go really slow. You can get those things goin pretty fast just gotta watch it on the turns or you might flip it. They are very top heavy
What I don't understand is using those commercial size trucks as a basis for an Ambulance... European ambulances are usually built around a mid-to-large size van that's far more maneuverable and equipped with a 4 cylinder turbo diesel that gives a lot better performance compared to these battering rams :P

Just remember that some services have fire/ems units and they are also carrying rescue gear on the truck
tydek07 1 year ago 31
I don't know much about American law, but if you got a empty track just going 2 miles straight out with no cars, you can go a bit faster than the normal 35 mph IMO.

@jeanorwin Not in a school zone
HaloMasterMind117 1 year ago
@tydek07 My dept is only allowed 15 over, so I'm sure this dept might have a speed rule.
pcfd20 1 year ago
@tydek07 Also too an ambulance may be going slow due to traffic. There are so many ppl out there that don't know to pull right when an ambulance is approaching with siren and lights running. As for my county as well, we can only run 10 mph over the speed limit. However if conditions aren't allowable for this then I run slower. Ive done 35 mph before with lights and siren running, however it was snowing too.
ncmedic92 9 months ago
@tydek07
This is an ALS ( Advanced Life Support) ambulance. It is used to transport patients as well as paramedics. In some counties the medics are in SUVs and all transports are done in BLS (basic) units with the medics riding with them, but PG does not do that
CentralHDTowing 2 months ago
How ridiculously slow. What a very inefficient vehicle. All show and no go. A european ambulance would leave it for dead.
biggyjeans1 2 years ago 8
here in the us though its not so much about speed
wakeoforion999 1 year ago
@biggyjeans1 Yeah, and its in europe you hear about ambulances, being involved in accidents!! though they wouldnt drive fast in heavy traffic!
keldfc 9 months ago
@keldfc you hear both from Europe and the US about Fire/EMS vehicles being involved in accidents while responding.
It's hard to compare european code 3 driving style with the american one, cause traffic reacts completly different: In the US they often stop at intersection, Q and airhorn running hot and cross traffic still doesn't stop, and in Europe we often can rush over red lights and intersections only by using hi-lo sirens
EnjoyFirefighting 7 months ago
@biggyjeans1 if so then how come the fire and ems services are up to 37% more efficient than european services... THINK before you talk
jojmr27 8 months ago
@biggyjeans1 but you forgot....people in the US are MUCH Larger ;) ahah

Sorry But i Dont See the Point in Ambulances that Size, They are Slow and the Manoeuvrability on them is Shocking i Prefer NHS's Mercedes Sprinters Ect.
MarkMck1994 2 years ago 3
@MarkMck1994 u are so right big waste of envirioment of using so big ambulances
raksoen 2 years ago
@andy there is a federal law that says if u dont pull over for police, fire, ems you will get a nice little ticket and maybe some jail time i know in sc,usa you'll spend 6 months in jail for failure too yeild
crossvfd1228 2 years ago 5
why are people stupid? there should be aome kinda law if people do not move then they get a ticket or something...am i right?
andycop211 2 years ago 38
Yes.
CSXRP 2 years ago
But how will someone dish out the ticket? Unless there is police escorting the ambulance, then ambulance can't just pull over, get the guys info, then report him. You know what i mean? Who's going to give the ticket to the guy not moving over?
xXFatalSinzXx 2 years ago 2
@xXFatalSinzXx Wll thats why some departments are getting dash cams installed into their trucks so they have a record of it.

there is a law, just rare enforcement
LeSedici 1 year ago
@andycop211 I believe there are such laws in most places, but unless you have a cop following the ambulance, there isn't anyone to catch the motorist and give them the ticket. IMHO they should just stick a high def wide angle video camera on the front of them, run the license plates and mail them the ticket.

@andycop211 they already do
deem396 1 year ago
@andycop211 Most countrys today got tickets if you dont move for a emergency viechal but then again should the ambulance personel go out and do the ticket? XD They dont got the time for that or call the police. :/ And there is plenty of stupid people in the trafic today in all countrys! Sorryfor bad english. :P

@andycop211 There is if your spotted it's called failure to yield to an emergency vehicle in every state.
CSXRP 1 year ago
@andycop211 They can get a ticket. *Depending on what state you are in* Here, if you don't pull over for a EMS/FR Unit, they can call into dispatch and *if license plate is in view* call in a failure to yield.

@andycop211 We have 2 laws. Failure to stop for an emergency vehical, and if you get annopying ehough, we can LEGALY ram your car. Trust me, 5 ton ladder truck vs car, they move after the first "hint"

@andycop211 That is a law...Failure to yield to an emergency vehicle is the ticket.
386obc 1 year ago
@andycop211 there already is in almost every state.
gocolts1490 1 year ago
@andycop211 should be, but the law here states that us (fire dept, ambulance) or only asking for the right of way.. There for they don't have to move if they want to be an ass.. and trust me the road is full of those type of people. most of the time they get tired of the federal Q and move after some time!.

its a regular Q, if you look at the bumper in the picture at the begining of the video u can see that its mounted in the center.

If there was already an engine and an ambulance onscene, why dispatch another ambulance to that location for a 13min drive? I can understand if the medical situation is that urgent that 2 more paramedics are needed, but in the end only one ambulance gets to transport the patient. I'd like to understand why and how many units are normally dispatched to medical calls.
fopneus 2 years ago
in my area only 1 responds then the surrounding towns cover that town or our town calls in a private ambulance company for help
wrestlingmarineab101 2 years ago
@fopneus may have been a BLS ambulance
hollywoodsix 2 years ago
@hollywoodsix
It is an ALS unit, in PG the medics also do the transport to the hospital on calls that require ALS
CentralHDTowing 2 months ago
@fopneus in my area depending on the call you will always get 2 Emt-basics on an ambulance. the fire department gets called for waste cleanup, car accidents, help lifting. paramedics (emt-p) in a 2 person crew SUV will get dispatched for unconscious, diabetic emergency, shock, drug overdose. one paramedic will then get into the back of the ambulance while the other one follows in the SUV to the hospital.

why do us ambulances always drive so slowly?
MovieInventor 2 years ago
So we don't crash or get hit in the process of heading to the scene. How useful would an ambulance be if it's lying on its side in the middle of the road?
havoks169 2 years ago 27
@havoks169 not very
mbc2915 1 year ago
@havoks169 Not that usefull, About three years ago in Vallejo,CA we had a engine company tip over on the way to a call.

They Drive so slow because there is so much wieght on the vehicle and it is a big truck

i think you are all able to read:
"ride along with paramedic ambulance 25 en route to a medical call outside its area. The local medic unit was already dispatched on an other call."

Good thing you aren't a fire engine going to a structure fire, or it would have burned to the ground before you got there.

their very slow because of the truck its very heavy

A department near me has 3 of these same rigs, they say the same as you just did. They are really slow. Freight-liners with underpowered engines.

we have one of those huge trucks at my station it just looks like they go really slow. You can get those things goin pretty fast just gotta watch it on the turns or you might flip it. They are very top heavy
