a prostitute is still a prostitute no matter how beautiful or refined she may be. this western romanticized (fetish) view of geishas doesnt make them any less of what they are and doesnt make the ugly side of their history disappear. maybe a geisha in reality has a different meaning, especially in today's times, but not according to the history of japan. trying to appease with all that is very ignorant but this is just typical of white ppl. nothing new there

This is a lovely video, and you are right; they are truly beautiful. Their art is something special, and is severely misunderstood. But I thought I would point out that not all the pictures in your video are of real geisha/geiko/maiko. Some are maiko-henshin, or maiko make-over, and some are courtesans, I believe. Still lovely, though! The geisha world is having to change so to keep up with modernization so they can keep clients. Indeed, they are not prostitutes. Thanks for this!

Others have the right to be strong and outspoken, but for me personally, I think that women have gotten entirely to far from femininity in the name of equality. I think you can balance beauty with strength. I know this might hurt a lot of people, and many might get all pissed off at me. But in the movie, like the geisha were all so beautiful, but when i look in these pictures they are not so beautiful. I mean everyone is beautiful, but their facial structure isn't as attractive as the ones in Memoirs of a Geisha. Perhaps it's because it's a movie, hollywood. :/ But yes, I love geisha. They are so interesting. Thank you for this.

Well it's a nice video, and I appreciate the thought behind it but...I have to say that the fake maiko (tourists playing maiko dress-up, which, I note, have been mentioned before) grouped with the real maiko and geiko at 0:56,2:14,2:36,2:45 and 3:13 , bothers me a bit.

What bothers me the most is the two pics of Oiran you inserted at 2:48 and 2:58, because they WERE (highclass) prostitutes...and I'm seeing them mixed with Geisha way too often for my taste...-_-

The book Memoirs of a Geisha made more and more people see Geisha as prostitutes. Its really sad. Is based off Mineko's life. Though she was upset when her name was in the credits. And she claims there are lots of lies etc.

the movie did do that and it was terrible what golden did to her and i really really detest the million other inacuracies in the movie and book, but it is what got many people interested in geisha. without the movie and the over-fantasizing many die hard true geisha fans wouldn't be around today.

yes I feel the same way too! only american's display it that way, geishas are not prostitutes, they entertain men by chatting, serving tea, and performing dance which is much more appropriate then a stripper because their beautiful clothes stays on!

My favorite movie of all time! Thank you for posting. I named my white and black kitten Chiyo becuase of the pattern of her markings she looks like a Geisha and she needed an auspicious name because she was abandoned and found a loving home. :) I respect Geisha so much.Arigato.

Hello I just want to inform you about something I'm not trying to be mean are anything but I just feel like saying this, the difference between Geisha's and prostitutes is that Geisha's always tie their obi(sash) in the back, and prostitutes wear their obi in the front for they could get it off easily and put it on easily when having sexual intercourse with a costumer, though today oiran's(prostitutes) don't do that today because there's a law out for that!

Nicely put together, but a most of those weren't geisha, they were maiko (apprentice geisha). If you read the book Memoirs of a Geisha, it shouldn't have been hard to tell. Apprentices wear the momo-ware hairstyle that has red silk in the back, a red collar and a specific style of obi knot
