What is so ironic is that the Khmer Rouge was actually split into two camps. One claimed that the Vietnamese are our communist brothers. The other -- which was led by Pol Pot -- went back to the ancient hatred and mistrust of the Vietnamese. Not all of the victims, but many were actually Khmer Rouge who did not follow Pol Pot's doctrine. Like the Great Purge of the Soviet Union were communists, who did not follow Stalin's doctrine.

To: kreewarrior : 1975, Lon Non lived in Pailin. Not many knew what he did or exactly where he was. I lived across the road from his small chalet but never seen him.

Yes...Tell you truth, every one were running for their life. I too left at noon on 17th of April 1975 to Olak, the border, with Hul tone, the governor. He wouldn't even wait for soldiers who walked from Treng to join him in Pailin. Their fates were not known, possibly all killed. At 7:00 p.m, when we just set up our camp, panic started When Pol Soth radioed in and said that the KR were in Pailin . Lon Non survived not, no one knew.

What they always seem to focus on is what happened during the Khmer Rouge. Yes it was horrible but Cambodia doesn't want to be remembered in that way. How about discussing how peaceful and prosperous that nation was before the Civil War/Republican Regime. Or how about discussing the aftereffects such as decay of cultural identity, loss of specialized labor /brain drain and the corruption within the government? I feel this is too little to late.
