Many people today know Mae Questel but don't make the connection. She played Aunt Bethany in "Christmas Vacation", starring Chevy Chase. She also did the voice for Betty Boop when the character was brought back to appear in "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" Betty Boop was retired in 1939. Mae also did the voice of Olive Oyl, Popeye's girlfriend. She died on January 4, 1998.
Helen Kane was a popular singer before Betty Boop had been created. She should have won the law suit because it is quite obvious that the look & the voice were based on her. Mae Questel had actually won a contest as a Helen Kane look & sound alike. Betty was voiced by several women over the years, Marjorie Hines, Mae Questel, Bonnie Poe (mostly in public appearances) and possibly Kate Wright. It is usually Marjorie Hines or Mae Questel that you hear. I love both Helen Kane and Betty.
@abukamoon She should have won but it was a scam trial. Fleischer lied & said he had a black singer on film with that same voice he copied for betty boop cartoons, but his projector broke down in court so the judge never saw his evidence! He was trying to speed up the film so it would sound high and squeeky like helens voice. But still, the judge ruled for Fleischer! Helen should have won that! Maybe Paramount put her in some movies as a consolation? Betty Boop was a Paramount cartoon!
@2reeler Interesting. I could never understand how she could have lost in court. The first time I heard Helen Kane, I said "That's Betty Boop". And then when I was a picture of her, that was made it official.
It's wrong to show pics of Betty Boop with this recording. Helen Kane may have originated "boop-boop-a-doop" but she wasn't Betty Boop. Mae Questel originally created the Betty voice by imitating Kane, but the imitation was different and was what really took off with the public.
@emilupland Well its suprising because i would think someone that old wouldn't even know how to use Youtube. Haha. And i really love this song. I first heard it by Marilyn Monroe :)
Just heard this driving through Portland on 89.1fm, I wish we had that station in Chicago!

Helen Kane was Ke$ha of 1920's :-) I just hope the latter doesn't become a classic

Oh man, I first heard this when I must have been 5 or so years old. Haven't heard it again until now, but I just knew when to say "boop-boop-ba-doo".
Strange how I remembered that; the mind is a funny thing.
