I am a HUGE fan of both, of course was a fan of Cornell first and will ALWAYS think that man has a voice that should NEVER stop, but I did love David Cook on Idol, especialy his cover of Hello by Lionel Ritchie.
I dont see why there is any reason for ppl to be angry that David did his own version of the song, isnt that what they are told to do? Make it their own?
I like both versions and think he should keep makin cover songs but by puttin his spin on em, just like Cornell does, like Thank you.
I honestly never heard Chris Cornell sing, I never heard of him. When David Cook sang on American Idol I heard him give credit to Chris that night. I thought David was amazing vocally. I then looked up Chris because of David Cook. its a win win situation for both artists.
David cook has a great voice but chris Cornell is the Rock God. You can't compare the both because chris is out of the league of 99.9% of the artistes out there.
@tmac4157 I have to agree with kentttj I never heard Cornell's version of Billy Jean. And after listening to it I gotta say I prefer David's over his. Much better voice.
better voice?? get the fuck outta here....Cornell is widely regarded as one of the top 3 rock voices EVER...try listening to songs like "Say Hello to Heaven" is u think David has a better voice....David has a good voice, that is all....quite generic sounding and not even half the power or range of Cornell's
I still prefer David's take on Cornell's version. All the controversy about this is totally lame. As Seacrest said he gave Cornell credit, but definitely the judges were listening. I think it's quite a compliment to Cornell that David liked his version and performed it on A.I. and was excited that Cornell though he did a great job.

Are you serious? Chris' song has a very slow beat because it's a sad song, Cook sped that shit up and it lost all of it's feeling. And if you have ears, chris said Cook sang it well, although I thought it was terrible cover of Chris' cover.
Then that means he picked the wrong song. He should have picked a song that sounds natural at that tempo. Plus, he didn't have a time limit, here. They get to perform the entire song. He sped it up cus he wanted to a lost the emotion, at least for me.

not only chris cornell has an unique voice, but a whole lot more power than david cook. chris gets aout of tune and can't hold a note longer because he has been singing the way he's remembered for for more than 20 years. listen to audioslave's first cd, called "audioslave", and tell me who's had more success... and anytime, even in 20 years, chris cornell will still be having way more success than david cook

Chris cornell's version is way better because theres feeling in it. David Cook's version is really good but its just a pop singer singing a song. there's no feeling in it.
Chris Cornell is much more older and has a lot more experience than David Cook, that's why his cover has, for a many people, more value than David's. I prefer David Cook's cover, anyway.
david cook's version is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy better. chris cornell sounds.. uhhh druggy. (don't kill me) the studio version is even more amazing. david cook singing it of course.
This was a great compliment to Chris Cornell who was clearly given proper credit. To me Cook's and Cornell's voices are totally different. I actually find it easier to listen to Cook but I'm just now becoming familiar with Chris Cornell and am understanding how good he is.
Chris Cornell's musical and vocal talent surpasses and is greater than anything that David Cook has ever, or will ever do. That is a fact. Cook will be a fucking nobody a few years from now. He will never hold a candle to the legendary rock musician and singer Cornell is. Also Cornell is not angry at all, he was pleased with Cook's performance because it was amazing. If you fucking morons used your ears and listened to this interview you would understand that.

david cook is 4000 times better now than cornell ever was or ever will be and cook is just getting started. dont be jealous that cook did it so much better than cornell so stop your crying.
cook will never be as big or respected or good as chris . cornell makes every list of the worlds best singers from mtv to rolling stone. cook will never do tha. By the way how did you come to the number 4000 times better?
wow yardstick, you're a fucking faggot who doesn't know what the hell he is talking about. Cook is a fucking American Idol nobody, Cornell is a legend.
Chris cornell can outsing David Cook, maybe still even today, for goddamn sure in his prime.
But even today, Chris Cornells voice is rich and is so amazing. David Cook isn't bad in anyway, but when you compare Cook's live performance to one of Cornells live performance, you can see the obvious difference in skill and talent.
Not to mention Cook is a trendwhore and Cornell was a trend starter
Trndkillah your the moron cus you didn't read what I said that ryan should have said "Here's david cook with chris cornell's version of MICHAEL JACKSON'S billie jean."
Ryan should have said when he introduced david's performance on AI saying "Here's david cook with chris cornell's version of michael jackson's billie jean." You need to give credit where credit is due cus MJ is the one who wrote the song 25 years ago and the one who gave an unforgettable performance of it at the motown 25 and an unforgettable music video of it aswell.
Idol fans are one of a kind dips***s, that's for sure. When they hear someone on the show do something, they automatically credit them. And when they find out that they merely stole an idea, they refute "OH WELL HE DID IT BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL". Idol fans have no artistic bearing whatsoever. They only care about pretty boys/girls with flashy singing. All of the American Idols are showgirls. Nothing more, nothing less.
You know what your post is really lacking? A nice string of rude and empty generalizations. An itsy bitsy suggestion for next time: try squeezing a "your momma" in there somewhere. It would bring a bit more pizzazz to the overall impression of being a... truly... likeable person.
C'mon, all. It's a cover, a tribute, not a rallying call for competition between fans -- or an act of thievery, for God's sake. Chris Cornell wove a great rendition. David Cook sang the hell out of it. /Salute both.
the ones to blame for this stupid 'who did it better Chris or David' debate are the american idol judges for confusing up people... Chris created that version and David sang his ass off of it, the two things uncomparable, but they both did a great job with it
can you people stop debating and say they are both great singers and stop insulting them just to prove the other is better. Cook is a good and so is Chris. They both rock and just leave it at that
Chris Cornell's voice is powerful and unique. Many people are just carried away with Cook's hype because of the show. They are incomparable. Not even close.
Oh come on! Chris Cornell is the best!!! David Cook did a great job with this song. Chris Cornell's voice is very unique and he is FINE!!!! David Cook just looks up to Chris Cornell and I know Chris is flattered by David singing his version of "Billy Jean"!
You can't say Cook was better. You can't compare. Cornell is a genius for the arrangement. They sing it differently and both are awesome. The judges said they knew who's arrangement it was too. They said they were praising the performance. Never did the judges mention the arrangement. Regardless, it's done.
no no no.. Cook was great, but c'mon? better than chris? impossible! haven't u ever heard seasons, sunshower, when i'm down, say hello 2 heaven? call me a dog? everey song! Cornell has a great voice, so does Cook, but u cant and shouldn't compare
I just don't get the fuzz about the whole thing!! Seacrest ad just said 'Singing Chris Cornell's version of Billie Jean, David Cook'. Why people keep saiyng it was a ripp off???
I agree.. Chris Cornell has got to be one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time. But I have to say, David Cook's version isnt all that bad. It's very flattering for an artist to have someone cover their song, or their version of a song, and I guess it becomes more so when the cover is done beautifully.
Chris may be the legend behind writing all the songs, but looking at just the vocals, I'm sorry to say that David did perform the song better, vocally speaking...
how dare you!!! he is the american idol (not american "Chump" funnily enough) for a reason...i certainly dont recall you being the authority on musical talent
ok david cook is an amazing artist an he has a wonderful voice. he totally deserved the win....but chris cornell is a rock and roll god...he has more then 20 years experience in the industry. he has grown into the spectacular performer song writer and vocalist through his years of personal growth pain addiction heartbreak and happiness. who would have ever imagined that billy jean could sound that beautiful. only him...that is why hes legend not since Robert Plant has a voice been soul moving
david cook really does have a voice better suited for this version of the song. chris cornell is a genius for coming up with this version, but cook did it so much better
exactly!!! it's not about cornell not being great - because he is a legend in his own right, but cook did this song better. its not an inuslt to cornell, because he made this amazing version, but cook just sang it better.
i didnt care for CC version at all, david did it some justice is an understatement..thanks david for saving that train wreck from CC..i do like cc but this was awful.
chris cornell is nothing short of a legend.

fumonjo2 3 years ago
Chris Cornell is much more older and has a lot more experience than David Cook, that's why his cover has, for a many people, more value than David's. I prefer David Cook's cover, anyway.

No doubt Cornells version is better. Cornell has a rock voice which gives the song the power.
Cooks voice is beautiful but at the same time extremely boring.

chris cornell has one of the best voices in the world
david cook is just an american idol
in a year everyone is going to forget him
dont get me wrong he has a good voice
but you cant compare him let alone say he is better
man cookielover8800 you dont know chris cornell

man you dont even KNOW
david aint NOTHING compare to the legend CHRIS CORNELL

i agree with that one...
Chris cornell is way better...
and then that queer let the judges believe he thought of remaking the song...

In his prime, Chris beats David anyday. Even still today, with Audioslave and the solo albums, he's the best rock singer of the last 10 or so years.

This was a great compliment to Chris Cornell who was clearly given proper credit. To me Cook's and Cornell's voices are totally different. I actually find it easier to listen to Cook but I'm just now becoming familiar with Chris Cornell and am understanding how good he is.

I love two COOK and CORNELL also great talentes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
criscarr76 3 years ago 6
Chris Cornell's musical and vocal talent surpasses and is greater than anything that David Cook has ever, or will ever do. That is a fact. Cook will be a fucking nobody a few years from now. He will never hold a candle to the legendary rock musician and singer Cornell is. Also Cornell is not angry at all, he was pleased with Cook's performance because it was amazing. If you fucking morons used your ears and listened to this interview you would understand that.

wow yardstick, you're a fucking faggot who doesn't know what the hell he is talking about. Cook is a fucking American Idol nobody, Cornell is a legend.

has this queen heard david cooks version?
david sang the shit out of it, this hole just sang it,. wtf?
cubbiewa 3 years ago

Jason6385 3 years ago 2
Ryan should have said when he introduced david's performance on AI saying "Here's david cook with chris cornell's version of michael jackson's billie jean." You need to give credit where credit is due cus MJ is the one who wrote the song 25 years ago and the one who gave an unforgettable performance of it at the motown 25 and an unforgettable music video of it aswell.
Jason6385 3 years ago
He did say that you fucking moron. Watch the tape, he specifically says "Chris Cornell's version of Billie Jean".
People are idiots.

Nothing more, nothing less.
davewah3 3 years ago

Chris created that version and David sang his ass off of it, the two things uncomparable, but they both did a great job with it
muhsiul 3 years ago
can you people stop debating and say they are both great singers and stop insulting them just to prove the other is better.

David Cook just looks up to Chris Cornell and I know Chris is flattered by David singing his version of "Billy Jean"!
kern02 3 years ago 2
Thank you. You make sense. I wonder if the people arguing about who is better listened to the whole thing! XD
Killitydoom 3 years ago
You can't say Cook was better. You can't compare. Cornell is a genius for the arrangement. They sing it differently and both are awesome. The judges said they knew who's arrangement it was too. They said they were praising the performance. Never did the judges mention the arrangement. Regardless, it's done.
FloatingGrin 3 years ago 5

BrazilianVicki 3 years ago
the reason he was being ripped cause the judges were calling it original and I don't remember Cook saying anything. But he did say so later
TomCollinsgirl 3 years ago
The funny thing is that Ryan SAID "David Cook with CHRIS CORNELL'S VERSION of Billie Jean" BEFORE Cook even sang it.
kirakirainu 3 years ago 2
I agree.. Chris Cornell has got to be one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time. But I have to say, David Cook's version isnt all that bad. It's very flattering for an artist to have someone cover their song, or their version of a song, and I guess it becomes more so when the cover is done beautifully.
furiouspeach 3 years ago 3
Chris may be the legend behind writing all the songs, but looking at just the vocals, I'm sorry to say that David did perform the song better, vocally speaking...

ok david cook is an amazing artist an he has a wonderful voice. he totally deserved the win....but chris cornell is a rock and roll god...he has more then 20 years experience in the industry. he has grown into the spectacular performer song writer and vocalist through his years of personal growth pain addiction heartbreak and happiness. who would have ever imagined that billy jean could sound that beautiful. only him...that is why hes legend not since Robert Plant has a voice been soul moving

david cook really does have a voice better suited for this version of the song. chris cornell is a genius for coming up with this version, but cook did it so much better
thegreatzorro 3 years ago 3
exactly!!! it's not about cornell not being great - because he is a legend in his own right, but cook did this song better. its not an inuslt to cornell, because he made this amazing version, but cook just sang it better.
