  • chris cornell is nothing short of a legend.

  • Cook has really good voice, Cornell has fucking amazing voice.

  • I am a HUGE fan of both, of course was a fan of Cornell first and will ALWAYS think that man has a voice that should NEVER stop, but I did love David Cook on Idol, especialy his cover of Hello by Lionel Ritchie.

I dont see why there is any reason for ppl to be angry that David did his own version of the song, isnt that what they are told to do? Make it their own?

I like both versions and think he should keep makin cover songs but by puttin his spin on em, just like Cornell does, like Thank you.

  • I honestly never heard Chris Cornell sing, I never heard of him. When David Cook sang on American Idol I heard him give credit to Chris that night. I thought David was amazing vocally. I then looked up Chris because of David Cook. its a win win situation for both artists.

  • ey chris cornell's such a nice guy giving off good comments on david's rendition (^-^)

  • David cook has a great voice but chris Cornell is the Rock God. You can't compare the both because chris is out of the league of 99.9% of the artistes out there.

  • @tmac4157 I have to agree with kentttj I never heard Cornell's version of Billy Jean. And after listening to it I gotta say I prefer David's over his. Much better voice.

  • @liamsmommy81 I completely agree with you. Cook's voice is unparalleled.

  • @liamsmommy81

better voice?? get the fuck outta here....Cornell is widely regarded as one of the top 3 rock voices EVER...try listening to songs like "Say Hello to Heaven" is u think David has a better voice....David has a good voice, that is all....quite generic sounding and not even half the power or range of Cornell's

  • I still prefer David's take on Cornell's version. All the controversy about this is totally lame. As Seacrest said he gave Cornell credit, but definitely the judges were listening. I think it's quite a compliment to Cornell that David liked his version and performed it on A.I. and was excited that Cornell though he did a great job.

  • Chris Cornell- many loves you ESPECIALLY David Cook... If not, he would never sing your song in that grand competition...

  • love both version..

  • @Doremi35136 David never claimed credit for the cover you stupid tard, Doremi

  • @dfeeel2 I never said he did..retard!

  • david cook.......you mtherfucker!

chris cornell created the cover, he just sang it.

  • Bottom line, about 50kpeople maybe knew about this song prior to Cook singing it. After he sang it, 50 million people knew this version and Cornell has gotten credit, so any pissed off Cornell fans need to go smoke one and chill.

  • david cook DID mention it's chris cornell's version. he did.

  • @iDiggMGL no that is the case for every show. They have 1 minute and a half. Otherwise the live recordings wouldn't be shorter than the studio recordings.

And you may have the right to enforce an opinion, but I still have the right to dislike yours.

  • no it wasnt, he didnt speed it up, ur a dumbass get over it..

  • Comment removed

  • @iDiggMGL he has to speed it up, cause he has a minute and a half to put out a decent performance. That's why it is sped up like that.

  • Then that means he picked the wrong song. He should have picked a song that sounds natural at that tempo. Plus, he didn't have a time limit, here. They get to perform the entire song. He sped it up cus he wanted to a lost the emotion, at least for me.

And please don't rate this down just because I didn't like DC's version. I shouldn't get a negative thumb down, just because I don't agree with you.

  • @JE23452425 wow your a douche. David Cook will never amount Chris Cornell!

  • Comment removed

  • Chris Cornell is so mature about it. I love him for it! He's so talented.

  • It's great that Chris Cornell got the credit he deserved for putting out a great version of Michael's famous song.

  • Chris Cornell is fucking amazing

  • Chris Cornell is so professional about it. Great.

  • hes such an amazing vocalist and i dont even like male singers. his voice is so unique and boy can he wail

  • the singer for pearl jam is eddie vedder

  • I know....

  • chris is so nice guy... he is one of the best rock vocalist, but he isn't an asshole like axl rose or any other rock singers who are just wannabe badass

  • i think david did an AMAZING job!!

  • I love David Cook's version of this song!So amazing....

  • actually it's chris cornell's version...

  • WOOHOO! he was in South Africa!!!!

  • by him doing this song and all the hype about how it was chris cornells version and how he didnt get credit blah blah has just bought chris's version to the light because now people hear it and are like oh well let me go look up his version.

  • aw chris cornell is so nice

i think they both did a good job at the song

i do like david's music a little more

but chris cornell has better presence

  • to each his own but Chris has a voice that is recognizable by anyone, and that is a reason he will go down as 1 of the best voices of rock.

  • @xcstacy2 I strongly agree! I love hearing his voice do just about any song because its one all his own, he is one of those artists you dont mistake for any other.. I love his remakes, like his Billy Jean, Thank You and his solo version of Black Hole Sun makes me get excited about music again! I dont know why they have to be compared and people cant accept that its possible both versions ROCK. In my opinion anyway,

  • i actually like cornells best. :) davids is great too.

  • Got to agree, cornells is great.

  • Cornell is good, and obviously his idea was mindblowing, but I prefer David's voice :)

  • there is something called POLITE disagreement. everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

  • Unfortunately people on youtube don't understand that, I'm glad there is still civilized people out there.

  • I hope they have a mash-up performance of Billi Jean. And maybe Black Hole Sun. Now tht would be a WOW show.

  • Chris Cornell had a great idea for a song, but David sounds better singing it.

  • I love Black Hole Sun!! Beautiful song! Cornell rocks live!!

As much as I love Chris, I liked David's version better.

    Though Chris still rocks!!!

  • "Cornell has already had a 20year head start on Cook, so give it 20years time and we'll see the difference" ----> yeah, that's right !

  • and you could say cornell is doing trashh now,

    -_-

  • Well, you could...but then again thats retarded thing to say, isn't it now? -.-

  • I agree with kentttj, Cook's version was amazing! And no one should be bashing him because he got some credit for it at first, Ryan said it was his version before he sang it and everyone knows it's his version now.

  • That's really mean...

  • Honestly, I wouldn't have heard the song if David didn't sing it on idol. And I believe it was the best performance on American idol ever.

  • you've never heard billie jean before? not even MJ?

  • @kentttj Nah that honor belongs to Fantasia's Summertime

  • @dfeeel2

Fantasia!?! I don't even think she can sing at all. Her voice is awful... I don't mean to be rude. i respect your opinion... But I was kinda shocked to see you say this...

  • @HopelessDaydreamer55 uhmm,, youre clearly living in a bubble if think my opinion is one that is out there, that performance is widely regarded as the best idol performance ever.. soo

  • @dfeeel2

i never said that it was out there. I know a lot of people really love her voice. I just don't understand why. I don't even get why she got to Hollywood, much less won the whole thing.

But that's just me. Well, me and a lot of my friends/family. I don't live in a bubble. I just don't have unusual taste.

  • The best version of this song is the original and it has the awards to prove it! Chris Cornell and David Cook equally did great performances of Michael's song.

    BILLIE JEAN

    Album: Thriller

    Writer: Michael Jackson

    Publisher: Mijac Music

Awards: Grammy Award for Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Male - 1983

Grammy Award for Best R&B Song - 1983

  • It's just in my opinion he doesn't sound that great on his live version of Billie Jean & Cook's version is better. It's only an opinion. I just think it's harsh of people to start slating Cook so early, Cornell has had over 20years in the industry. Cornell is more individual, however it all depends what mood your in & what style of music you prefer that decides what you listen to; everyone is different!

  • @cursonova I know this comment was written 2 yrs ago, but I just came accross it out of boredom from reading Youtube posts soo late at night :) I just really had to agree with this statement. As I said, I dont know why it has to be an either/or situation, I think they both rocked it, in their own different ways, so I really dont nderstand the big debate,, Chris Cornell is a legend and in my mind always will be, he will most likely sound GREAT to me no matter what the song. Now there is David...

  • not only chris cornell has an unique voice, but a whole lot more power than david cook. chris gets aout of tune and can't hold a note longer because he has been singing the way he's remembered for for more than 20 years. listen to audioslave's first cd, called "audioslave", and tell me who's had more success... and anytime, even in 20 years, chris cornell will still be having way more success than david cook

  • A good voice isn't just who can hold the highest note or singing in key. David Cook may be a good singer technically, but it's all just bland generic rubbish that is popular. Cornell isn't the best singer live, but his voice will always be more soulful and original than Cooks any day.

Not to mention that, back in the day, Cornell had the best set of pipes since Robert Plant. Cornell can't sing? Tell that to the 20+ million people who've bought his records.

  • Ok, 'tmac4157', the dig at me not checking my facts 'bra' is wrong. If you read my comment, you'll see that I said 'will' have more success. Cornell has already had a 20year head start on Cook, so give it 20years time and we'll see the difference. And my comment was only in relation to the performance of Billie Jean. I've listened to Cornell's other work and yes, I take my hat off to the man, great voice, great songs.

  • Cornell is undisputably the most innovative Singer and songwriter of his time and maybe of all times.

  • Yeah and Pooh bear is the most philosophically innovative creation since boy george.

  • You guys should really try & get hold of Neil Finn's version which he recorded yrs ago...

  • yeah, it was chris cornell version.... but if you'll listen to it david cook's version was way way better...

  • Ya......right. Have you listened to Chris' version?

  • David Cook's voice is so bland and typical. You could mix him up with a thousand different singers.

When you hear Chris Cornell's voice, you know exactly who it is. That's the mark of all the greats.

  • I find David Cook to have an amazing voice. I find Chris Cornell to have an amazing voice. I think there's room for many people to have amazing voices. I don't think you have to discredit one to like the other. I would hate to think music works that way.

  • My response was to someone else's assertion that David Cook's version was to quote "way, way better". If my comment is out of order for expressing an opinion, then the other guy's comment should be too. But then, I don't think there's anything wrong with people expressing their opinions.

BTW, I'm not discrediting David Cook to talk up Chris Cornell. It's my honest opinion that David Cook is decent, but simply nothing out of the ordinary. Cornell is.

  • I think David Cook has a good voice...but Chris Cornell has a great and UNIQUE voice.

  • I think both versions of the song are great! David did a great version plus it made me look up chris cornells version which i absolutely love too!

  • cooks voice is a dime a dozen.cornell is in a league of his own cook dont even compare.only 1 close to chris would be Brent from shinedown.

  • Cook's voice is a dime a dozen, he's just another neu-grunge singer. But Shinedown? That IS neu-grunge - either way, both bullshit.

  • It's very nice to hear someone who can cover Chris Cornell without looking like an idiot. I really must say they both are amazing. Still, I'd like to hear DC sing Slaves and Bulldozers...

  • Chris cornell's version is way better because theres feeling in it. David Cook's version is really good but its just a pop singer singing a song. there's no feeling in it.

  • Chris Cornell is much more older and has a lot more experience than David Cook, that's why his cover has, for a many people, more value than David's. I prefer David Cook's cover, anyway.

  • Chris Cornell makes David a piss of shit

  • LMAO!!!!!!

  • What the hell is a piss of shit?

  • very painful?

  • david cook's version is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyy better. chris cornell sounds.. uhhh druggy. (don't kill me) the studio version is even more amazing. david cook singing it of course.

  • I liked David Cook's version better

  • me recuerda a los grandes rockeros de todos los tiempos...

  • No doubt Cornells version is better. Cornell has a rock voice which gives the song the power.

Cooks voice is beautiful but at the same time extremely boring.

  • Well, actually I lied. I am god.

  • Ryan Seacrest has yet to receive a basket.

  • Cornell is god and don't ever dare compare anyone to him.

  • Chris Cornell is not God and neither are you. I think David is great. Yeah, I dare to compare.

  • what da fuck david cook is does not compare with chris cornell

chris cornell has one of the best voices in the world

david cook is just an american idol

in a year everyone is going to forget him

dont get me wrong he has a good voice

but you cant compare him let alone say he is better

man cookielover8800 you dont know chris cornell

think soundgarden, audioslave, temple of dog,and his solo work now

    man you dont even KNOW

david aint NOTHING compare to the legend CHRIS CORNELL

  • i agree with that one...

    Chris cornell is way better...

and then that queer let the judges believe he thought of remaking the song...

  • a basket!!! fucking amazing!!

  • In his prime, Chris beats David anyday. Even still today, with Audioslave and the solo albums, he's the best rock singer of the last 10 or so years.

  • daimn! cornells a legend! cook has yet to get there..

  • Wow! The best voice ever! David made a good version too but Chris' is always better. just listen....

  • This was a great compliment to Chris Cornell who was clearly given proper credit. To me Cook's and Cornell's voices are totally different. I actually find it easier to listen to Cook but I'm just now becoming familiar with Chris Cornell and am understanding how good he is.

  • I love two COOK and CORNELL also great talentes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Chris Cornell's musical and vocal talent surpasses and is greater than anything that David Cook has ever, or will ever do. That is a fact. Cook will be a fucking nobody a few years from now. He will never hold a candle to the legendary rock musician and singer Cornell is. Also Cornell is not angry at all, he was pleased with Cook's performance because it was amazing. If you fucking morons used your ears and listened to this interview you would understand that.

  • hahaha! well, i think for a cover of a cover, it's a pretty good one.. :)

  • YARSTICKWILLY You suck huge balss and david cooks is a huge tit bag fuck you BITCH

  • wow yardstick, you're a fucking faggot who doesn't know what the hell he is talking about. Cook is a fucking American Idol nobody, Cornell is a legend.

  • has this queen heard david cooks version?

david sang the shit out of it, this hole just sang it,. wtf?

  • Chris cornell can outsing David Cook, maybe still even today, for goddamn sure in his prime.

But even today, Chris Cornells voice is rich and is so amazing. David Cook isn't bad in anyway, but when you compare Cook's live performance to one of Cornells live performance, you can see the obvious difference in skill and talent.

Not to mention Cook is a trendwhore and Cornell was a trend starter

  • your momma

  • David Cook is really sad and pathetic. I hate that he took it from a legend. Chris is the best! David is gonna sell out.. im calling it out!

  • Trndkillah your the moron cus you didn't read what I said that ryan should have said "Here's david cook with chris cornell's version of MICHAEL JACKSON'S billie jean."

  • Ryan should have said when he introduced david's performance on AI saying "Here's david cook with chris cornell's version of michael jackson's billie jean." You need to give credit where credit is due cus MJ is the one who wrote the song 25 years ago and the one who gave an unforgettable performance of it at the motown 25 and an unforgettable music video of it aswell.

  • He did say that you fucking moron. Watch the tape, he specifically says "Chris Cornell's version of Billie Jean".

    People are idiots.

  • No ur an idiot.

  • Idol fans are one of a kind dips***s, that's for sure. When they hear someone on the show do something, they automatically credit them. And when they find out that they merely stole an idea, they refute "OH WELL HE DID IT BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL". Idol fans have no artistic bearing whatsoever. They only care about pretty boys/girls with flashy singing. All of the American Idols are showgirls. Nothing more, nothing less.

  • You know what your post is really lacking? A nice string of rude and empty generalizations. An itsy bitsy suggestion for next time: try squeezing a "your momma" in there somewhere. It would bring a bit more pizzazz to the overall impression of being a... truly... likeable person.

C'mon, all. It's a cover, a tribute, not a rallying call for competition between fans -- or an act of thievery, for God's sake. Chris Cornell wove a great rendition. David Cook sang the hell out of it. /Salute both.

  • LOL nice. Kudos.

  • david cook > daughtry

  • no

david cook > better than daughtry

  • the ones to blame for this stupid 'who did it better Chris or David' debate are the american idol judges for confusing up people... Chris created that version and David sang his ass off of it, the two things uncomparable, but they both did a great job with it

  • can you people stop debating and say they are both great singers and stop insulting them just to prove the other is better. Cook is a good and so is Chris. They both rock and just leave it at that

  • nicely said

  • Chris Cornell's voice is powerful and unique. Many people are just carried away with Cook's hype because of the show. They are incomparable. Not even close.

  • I didn't even know who Chris Cornell was until David sung this song.

    Wow... he is really cool!

Thanks David, for introducing me to Chris... U R the best!

  • i love crhis cornell... but cookie's version was way better!

  • your going to hell. sorry.

  • it's not nice to say that moron..

  • YOUR A MORON

  • Your is possessive and means belonging to "you" but you're means you are. So, you're, in fact, a moron.

  • Personally, I liked Chris Cornell's version better. ;)

  • say what????

  • chris cornell is the greatest rock singer of all time

    that is almost sacrelige

    saying that

  • agreed!

  • Cook is Cook

he sang the song extremely well

he gave justice to that song

and even made it sound betta than eva!!

  • i like chris cornell but cook is a better singer and his voice is alot cleaner and better

  • Um... False.

Cornell is a rock legend and one of the greatest rock singers of all time.

I guess the hype of all this idol crap fools alot of people.

  • Oh come on! Chris Cornell is the best!!! David Cook did a great job with this song. Chris Cornell's voice is very unique and he is FINE!!!! David Cook just looks up to Chris Cornell and I know Chris is flattered by David singing his version of "Billy Jean"!

  • Thank you. You make sense. I wonder if the people arguing about who is better listened to the whole thing! XD

  • You can't say Cook was better. You can't compare. Cornell is a genius for the arrangement. They sing it differently and both are awesome. The judges said they knew who's arrangement it was too. They said they were praising the performance. Never did the judges mention the arrangement. Regardless, it's done.

  • no no no.. Cook was great, but c'mon? better than chris? impossible! haven't u ever heard seasons, sunshower, when i'm down, say hello 2 heaven? call me a dog? everey song! Cornell has a great voice, so does Cook, but u cant and shouldn't compare

  • Amen brother.

  • I just don't get the fuzz about the whole thing!! Seacrest ad just said 'Singing Chris Cornell's version of Billie Jean, David Cook'. Why people keep saiyng it was a ripp off???

  • the reason he was being ripped cause the judges were calling it original and I don't remember Cook saying anything. But he did say so later

  • The funny thing is that Ryan SAID "David Cook with CHRIS CORNELL'S VERSION of Billie Jean" BEFORE Cook even sang it.

  • I agree.. Chris Cornell has got to be one of the greatest rock vocalists of all time. But I have to say, David Cook's version isnt all that bad. It's very flattering for an artist to have someone cover their song, or their version of a song, and I guess it becomes more so when the cover is done beautifully.

  • Chris may be the legend behind writing all the songs, but looking at just the vocals, I'm sorry to say that David did perform the song better, vocally speaking...

  • it really makes me sick to see chris cornell's name mentioned in the same sentence as this other chump...really sick.

  • how dare you!!! he is the american idol (not american "Chump" funnily enough) for a reason...i certainly dont recall you being the authority on musical talent

  • i'm a music lover-I love Both-Cook and Cornell.They are great.Bravo!

  • i agree they are both great singers

  • david cook is obviously a better singer than chris cornell.

  • you are stupid for saying that

  • I'm so sorry to hear that you are deaf...

  • David Cook's sounded way better I reckon.

  • You can't compare that guy with Chris! Chris is a legend and one of the best voices ever! C'mon!

  • ok david cook is an amazing artist an he has a wonderful voice. he totally deserved the win....but chris cornell is a rock and roll god...he has more then 20 years experience in the industry. he has grown into the spectacular performer song writer and vocalist through his years of personal growth pain addiction heartbreak and happiness. who would have ever imagined that billy jean could sound that beautiful. only him...that is why hes legend not since Robert Plant has a voice been soul moving

  • "david might actually make it to the finale"

    that sounds so funny now...

  • I think David Cook sounded better

  • david cook really does have a voice better suited for this version of the song. chris cornell is a genius for coming up with this version, but cook did it so much better

  • exactly!!! it's not about cornell not being great - because he is a legend in his own right, but cook did this song better. its not an inuslt to cornell, because he made this amazing version, but cook just sang it better.

  • i didnt care for CC version at all, david did it some justice is an understatement..thanks david for saving that train wreck from CC..i do like cc but this was awful.

  • Can someone please tell what the song is called that is played at 1:12?

  • like a stone by audioslave

  • Like A Stone

  • it's the judges' fault! they forgot... but both cook and cornell are great.
