There was a documentary about this, and it went and found the soldiers who took part in this. Every soldier they went to that took part in this had psychological issues. They were driven with guilt. They knew in their minds they were just following orders, but they knew in their hearts that what they did was wrong.
But there was a man who disobeyed orders. Went to military prison. He has no issues. He knew that disobeying that order was the right thing to do, and it was.
Back then white people in the US hanged blacks, so killing and raping Vietnamese women and children was nothing out of the ordinary for them. They put Japanese in camps, and racially abuse non-whites and Asian in America. So I think My Lai was the tip of the iceberg of the war crimes committed by the American. the American killed more civilians than anyone else in the Vietnam war. There were more American bombs dropped in Vietnam than in WWII, killing 3 million people.
While the VC kill civilians, it was mostly men, if women and children die, they are probably caught in the cross fire.The Tet offensive as a sneaky attack, the people who died are the result of a war. The brutally of American and South Korean soldier was because these are far removed from the land. At least VC might have family ties to the South, so they are least likely to sodomize women and mutilate children. After all, these women and children look and talk like their own mother and sister.
During a civil war of any country when foreign troops are involved suffered greatly. In a civil war, men fought with men. With foreign troops, these people are far removed the culture and land, they have connection to the country so they kill women and children, rape and pillage, because at the end of the day they can go back to their own country and retire comfortably. Vietnam War as a enormous tragedy for the people. Vietnam was a used in global politics, and the people suffered greatly.
This is what happened when you let foreign troops in your country, because these troop do not see Vietnamese as human being so they are more prone to commit Massacre. I think you guys are missing the point of terrorism; that is, to install terror through violence or threats. The My Lai Massacre was a by product of certain Vietnamese villages supposedly sheltering North Korean soldiers during the Vietnam War. These sheltered North Korean soldiers would sneak shots at the American soldiers through the village, and the villages refused to cooperate. @BlockedParty Of course in saying that, you are aware of a few of the atrocities commited by NVA/VC forces during and just after the war. 3000 civilians killed by NVA forces in Hue just before the Americans entered the city. Approx. 500,000 killed outright by the NVA throughout Vietnam upon the exit of the Americans. Gotta look at the totality of the thing at hand and who did/does what before any one people are labeled "terrorists".

However, "apologizing" for a war is never good form or a good idea unfortunately. That sort of apologizing works okay within the context of interpersonal one on one human relations, but is something that becomes another political angle when done by governments and often is used to manipulate down the line. That is one reason they do not do that.

On March 17th 1966, 1200 Vietnamese civilians were murdered by ROK (South Korean) forces. So were is the condemnation of those innocent lives! There was a documentary about this, and it went and found the soldiers who took part in this. Every soldier they went to that took part in this had psychological issues. They were driven with guilt. They knew in their minds they were just following orders, but they knew in their hearts that what they did was wrong.

Approx. 500,000 killed outright by the NVA throughout Vietnam upon the exit of the Americans. Gotta look at the totality of the thing at hand and who did/does what before any one people are labeled "terrorists".

However, "apologizing" for a war is never good form or a good idea unfortunately. That sort of apologizing works okay within the context of interpersonal one on one human relations, but is something that becomes another political angle when done by governments and often is used to manipulate down the line. That is one reason they do not do that.

They would then have an excuse to invade Cuba. This is official, declassified information! Therefore, it's not like the U.S. never considered something like this. The fact is though if on a scale of one to ten of civilians killed by a country this past century, ten being the most. The U.S. is probably about a .8 with Russia, Japan, and Germany being 8, 9, and 10. For as powerful as the U.S. has been, it's been much more merciful with it than some other countries would probably be if they had it.

Why is it that My Lai is the only massacre remembered from Vietnam? It was terrible and to the eternal shame of the US.... but it was not the worst and not the only massacre! On March 17th 1966, 1200 Vietnamese civilians were murdered by ROK (South Korean) forces. So were is the condemnation of those innocent lives! Vietnam was a brutal war and most contingent forces had blood on their hands. Not just the US!
