Fred is the Jimi Hendrix of sound effects, but as a musician he is definitely a hack. He has a horrible guitar sound and his original material is weak at best. (See: "Brown Fingers", the Scott the Engineer song).

It has more recently come out why the name change happened. It sounds complely illogical in this clip and all the speculation is way off the mark.

It was a very personal matter related to who he was originally named after or who originally named him.

Once these details came out it was much more logical as to why he would discard the name.
