Well, I think the reason your dad thinks todays metal sucks is because he (like myself) grew up with bands like Metallica, Megadeth, and Slayer; bands that played fast, kick ass metal that had melodic qualities.

The crap that passes for metal today is essentially frenetic speed with NO melody...and some dude trying to sound scary screaming into a mic.

If you did a little more digging than just listening to what's on radio or generic music television shhows you'd know there's TONS of new metal bands out there that use melodies. A lot of which are more melodic than anything Slayer has released. Between the Buried and Me is the band in this video and if you listen to their songs instead of judging a short clip you'd realize they have way more talen and melodic qualities than a lot of metal bands, new AND old.
