I have to say that any time I get to see jazz master phil woods play, it's a real treat. What an incredible tone! Whenever I hear it I say "That's Phil Woods."
Lettore 725580
I was being sarcastic... every alto sax player should just become skilled... finding a new sound for the alto sax is what every alto player should strive for... conforming to what these guys sound like isn't what they should strive for.
i of course didn't mean to sound exactly like these guys. i meant it more on a technical level but yea ur right its important for everyone to strive to sound like their own self i guess i didn't word it right when i meant that =/
Why lol ? This is a music academy orchestra, with strings. Girls generally prefer music where you read, they don't like to put themselves ahead. If it was a big band, 90% would be male. So sad.
Phil combines a great, full sound with a strong swinging time-feel. His bebop ideas sound right, and he knows when to put them into high gear with his impressive technique.
That's "I'll Remember April", and the original arrangement from "Bird with Strings". Nevertheless the proof for Phil Woods being one of the closest among Bird's followers. he even plays on his saxophone.
He owns some of Bird's old saxophones. He "inherited" them when he married Bird's wife. But he doesn't play them. He even talks about how he how he had to pawn his own horn when he got called for a gig. He had to use Bird's Super 20 on the gig and he remembers Charles Mingus walking in and giving him a dirty look. No, Phil has always played his own horns and I'm sure Yamaha is paying him a lot of money for playing theirs.
@JROB1989 -- Yeah, man! Although in Hi-Fi, the arrangement remains dull, doesn't it? There's just no one on the planet who could change that. Phil plays great though.
@BrunoJazzmanLeicht Phil Woods doesn't play on Bird's horn. He has said this many times in various interviews. He currently plays on an unlacquered Yamaha 82Z and before that a gold-plated plated Selmer Mark VI (handpicked by Marcel Mule for those who know him).
@BrunoJazzmanLeicht The story about Bird's horn came about him in an interview (I forgot who was asking the questions) having to pawn his horn one night for groceries and when he came home Chan apparently told him he got a call on a potential gig so he played Bird's King and used that money to buy back his own horn. He only used Bird's horn once yet this guy in his book said "Phil Woods plays on Charlie Parker's horn" which is not true.
no way. of all parker's contemporaries, woods plays the least like him. his phrases are not similar at all. I understand when that term is used on guys like sonny stitt and such, but not woods.
Que sea hermoso es bastante hoy día, días en los que aquellos nobles ideales estéticos acerca de lo bello y lo feo han quedado en desuso. Y si, no habrá novedades en su discurso, pero si una linda síntesis.
i don't hear as deep of a sound than w/ his mark VI...whatever, i trust his decision to switch. i myself am a selmer player, but news on the 82Z altos is great...
Are you fucking kidding me? Did you really just say this sounded like elevator music? Man, what the hell is the matter with you? How can you even have the nerve to say that. If you can't appreciate Phil's playing then go watch something else and shut the fuck up. Jesus.
@lyigantius sounds like ur too immature to accept the fact that someone else has a different opinion. idk, who says elevator music is bad anyway. i'd put this in an elevator.
@royallighting7 Yeah, I mean that was like 3 years ago, and I was probably a little immature. However, I still feel like generalizing this song as "elevator music" is an extreme disrepsect. Phil Woods is a legend... I think "elevator music" implies "background" which is what it seems that "jazz" has turned into these days... and that makes me extremely irritated.
I saw him last year playing with UNT Jazz one o'clock It was kinda scary cause he was in the hospital for a while down here and recovered just in time for the concert, He poured everything he had into that performance like it was his last.
Best alto player alive IMHO.

@BrunoJazzmanLeicht WRONG. He only played Bird's horn wrong, learn your facts before you call yourself a 'jazzman'.
