When the plants reach 2-3" in height (and the weather is warm) transplant them to the garden spacing them from 12" to 18" apart depending on the type of lavender. If you can bear it, the first season cut off any blossoms before they open to give the plant more energy to develop.

However, if you want to start with seed, sow the seeds in potting soil, covering them lightly, and place them where they get good light. Keep the seeds moist but not wet as lavender doesn't like wet feet and the seedlings will likely damp off with too much water. After they develop several sets of leaves transplant them so they are spaced about 2" apart or place in small pots to give them enough room to develop a good root system.

You said that trying to grow from seeds takes a long time and is difficult. What would be some tips for growing in pots from seeds? Maybe some dos and don'ts.

Starting lavender from seed requires great patience as it can take up to a month for the seeds to germinate - and they are not guaranteed to come true which is another reason many people prefer to propagate from cuttings.
