I'm openly jealous cause Chris Botti has a nice sound and I have in my lifetime played just as well but never got past a certain point - commercially. If you are a trumpet player he is the next step of Herb Alpert or Chuck Mangione. There is nothing "intimidating" about his playing. Listen to Diz or Doc or Faddis or Vizzuti if you wanna know what you can't do. If you think you can do this better than Botti have the balls to try. Don't hate him because he's there and you're not ! He plays pretty.
Why do people insist anything that is melodic and not just scattered everywhere to be pap or elevator music? Kids who are heavy into rap think Miles Davis and Billie Holiday are "elevator music".
This is what Kenny G. sounds like when you put his lines to trumpet.
Like Kenny G, Chris Botti may be paying his bills with this pap, but let's be clear about one thing; this is what gives folks the musical runs when it comes to this brand of what passes for jazz. If a groove as funky as this one fails to inspire a musician to ignite it with bop inspired riffs, you have to wonder where his muse is at. (Paying bills?)
That microphone is specifically placed off the bell so that there's no additional "brassy" overtones. It just goes to show that every trumpet player has their own idea of what a horn should sound like. Mr. Botti, while I think lead trumpet players everywhere will agree you're not doing anything revolutionary for trumpets exactly, but may I say you are saving good music for future generations.
@Kickerinthehead Not really. It simply means hat they can avoid the big brassy harsh notes while performning in a cosy cafe/cabaret environment. More intimate experience for the audience.

While I respect your right to like or not like whatever you want, if you don’t like it don’t listen. Listen to what you do like. (See it is that easy) I for one love his music. It makes me feel good and want to be a better person with more patience… mellow, smooth. I like me like that. And I am not a touchy feely person. CB seems like a gracious person, I just saw his PBS show and he had no problem giving the stage to others. Looked like fun I wish I could have been there.
The whole smooth jazz genre is repititious, aritificially "moody," and uninspiring. Botti in particular I find boring. It's like watching a model posing as you listen to him play.
@SteveFallon1 You're talking too much, but you're not listening. I'm sure that there are other jazz genres and players that could suit better the word 'complexity', for example Keith Jarrett, Pat Metheny, John Scofield; even the fusion players like Allan Holdsworth...but you need to tell your soul to enjoy this as well. According to the situation that I am in, I listen to a determinate genre...If I need to relax, I would choose this every day.
@SteveFallon1: Most of it is just generic, white-bread Jazz. Chris Botti went for a romantic sound that had a bit more order to it; this does not make his music bad for that reason. I will say that it serves well as great background music during a date.

I know I have heard of all the other ones, but Chris Botti sill has the technique and he plays it smooth with class!

I have a request. Can anybody who plays the trumpet upload a tutorial of this song... I bought a trumpet 3 days ago and I can go like do,re,mi,fa,sol,la,si,do and I'm watching some tutorial videos that show how to control breath while playing etc. and I want to learn a song. and I think this one is not that complex, i guess. What do you think?
@dolunaydainsanolan The hard part about this song is the way it is played anyone can play lisa but when you put the emotion behind it you will never have a match and i myself am a trumpet player and have tried to recompose this and am not successful if you picked up the trumpet 3 days ago it will take you a while before you will be able to play this unless you have a brass instrument background and played the trumpet earlier in your life.
@guitarsrmine to be honest . I thought I should check him out and did. I didn't hear anything special? I listen to Gillespie,Fats , Brown,Little,Hubbard, Dorham and a lot of the modern cats. After those guys... yeah average. Special hair-do though.
@decus69 Because average he's not !! Youre probably one of those Maynard/Sandoval/ Hession lovers-only think screamers are good. This guy oozes emotion from the 1st measure, which in case you didnt know, is the MOST important aspect to music, not technique, not range, not blistering ear splitting solos. You better listen again, andif you play trumpet, you better re-evaluate your own ability!!!

All are good musicans, respect the music that they are playing. If it makes you feel good then just sit back and listen. If you don't like it you have all the right to find something that appeals to your listening pleasure.
For me, all the artists mentioned below are wonderful...each having their own style, flavor and musical attitude. The beauty in the variety of supreme artistry of any kind is much like the differences between an expansive mountain range, the red rocks of Southern Utah, the ocean shorelines and lush green rolling farmland... They are all materpieces, speaking to and satisfying the differences in each one of us who experiences them...and among them, we all have our favorites.
Yeah don't be stupid. This guy is the kenny G of trumpet. Sweet. Proficient. Great player. One of THE greats? Not a chance in hell. Like daynelmarzo posted: go check out some real trumpet players like Freddie, Lee Morgan, Dizzy, Clark Terry, etc.
You'll feel like a dumb ass for posting what you did, but at least you'll begin to be educated.
We must learn to appreciate the value of each gift instead of merely comparing them. When this is accomplished, we are then enabled to experience the boundless horizons of artistic beauty.
You all disappoint me, is music supposed to be a competition like a soccer game or something? Everyone is comparing trumpeters like they were quarterbacks or something, as if they were trying to defend their musical idol like art was a simple game with winners and losers. People do it with saxophonists, guitarists, and drummers alike, and I'm sick of it.
Even though I love the screaming trumpets and the bright ripping jazz leads, this stuff just gets to my core. I would trade my current chops to play like this anyday.
I waited on him and 2 band mates at our restaurant last night, and they were so nice, and SUPER FUNNY!! Very down to earth and fun, good tippers as well! It was very refreshing (I've waited on a few celebs and he was by far the best!)
Nobody can say one trumpet player is better than another for a few reasons 1) Where one person lacks another can make up for..ex. One may have an amazing tone but another could reach higher pitch or play more complicated music. 2) One player could have more experience thus putting the others at an unfair advantage 3) Some may have died before they out did another or didn't have their chance to make it big......its all a matter of time..somewhat
Chris Botti is my idol ... Maybe he is not the best trumpet player in the world but he put soul in his music and i think this is the most important thing for an artist ... BTW did any1 know on what trumpet he is playing in this video ?
@Blackbear147 Opinion: im the best trunpet player in the world. Its not true, of course, but we're all entitled to our own opinion, and in some ppls opinions Botti is the best. And at new age techy trumpet, he just might be.
His just a money maker. I suggest who said his the #1 to listen to Roy Hargrove, Nicholas Payton, Terence Blanchard, Jon Faddis, Wayne Bergeron, Wynton, James Morrisson, Adam Rapa, Terrel Stafford... and the list goes on.
And Daynemarzo-Ive been a musician for 40 years,30 of which Ive played professionally. Now, there are people who have told me that "You're the BEST"an that certainly isnt why I play-I play guitar, bass guitar, trumpet and keyboard. The fact that people enjoy my music is what matters, and Ive been blessed with a gift from God! I couldnt care less if someone says Im the best-thats not why I do it!
I happen to dig Botti-also Herb Alpert and Phil Driscoll-all diffeent stlyes, but all extremely great musicians. Im not gonna blow a bunch of smoke claiming FACT tat these guys are better than so-and-so. I love their music, . And daynelmarzo-is it a fact that Wnnton plays classical better than Chris, and when was the last time he played classical, or is it a CHOICE? Al Hirt is an incredible player . Your observations are strictly OPINION!
This concert was at the El Rey Theatre in LA (December 3rd 2001) to celebrate the release of Botti's Columbia Records debut Night Sessions. You can watch this concert on dvd, Chris Botti & Friends, Night Sessions: Live in Concert.

I bought a trumpet 3 days ago and I can go like do,re,mi,fa,sol,la,si,do and I'm watching some tutorial videos that show how to control breath while playing etc. and I want to learn a song. and I think this one is not that complex, i guess. What do you think?
dolunaydainsanolan 1 year ago
@dolunaydainsanolan The hard part about this song is the way it is played anyone can play lisa but when you put the emotion behind it you will never have a match and i myself am a trumpet player and have tried to recompose this and am not successful if you picked up the trumpet 3 days ago it will take you a while before you will be able to play this unless you have a brass instrument background and played the trumpet earlier in your life.

guitarsrmine 1 year ago
@guitarsrmine to be honest . I thought I should check him out and did. I didn't hear anything special? I listen to Gillespie,Fats , Brown,Little,Hubbard, Dorham and a lot of the modern cats. After those guys... yeah average. Special hair-do though.

@guitarsrmine yes,why?
decus69 1 year ago
@decus69 Because average he's not !! Youre probably one of those Maynard/Sandoval/ Hession lovers-only think screamers are good. This guy oozes emotion from the 1st measure, which in case you didnt know, is the MOST important aspect to music, not technique, not range, not blistering ear splitting solos. You better listen again, andif you play trumpet, you better re-evaluate your own ability!!!

His trumpeting techniques are a cross between Chet Baker and Miles Davis, but he still has his own style. He is just so smooth on the trumpet.

Chops don't mean anything if you can't send a chill up someone's spine (unless chops send a chill up your spine, lol). Botti can do that.
Marsalis, Sandoval, etc can as well, but they have that extra gear that Botti doesn't.
