ya, only the thing is May and Gary never actully met in the anime; the only time Gary appeared in the Advanced gen was the very end after May had gone to Johto, and that was when he battled ash with his Electivire, he then went to Sinnoh. the only time May was in sinnoh was for the brief time during the wallace cup, which Gary didn;t appear at, and turned out to be later traveling to the lake to investigate azelf.
