I have really enjoyed watching your videos dedicated to Michael Collins.
My shortcomings on the subject (I am French) are important ...
Is it normal that in Part 2, the background remains black from 6'30 while the background music continues to 8'25? If yes, exist a part 3? I would like to know the end of that terrible day.
Very interest documentary! Good research and Music. Well done! More please!
Is there part 3? After he left the Imperial Hotel....on to the Munster Arms in Bandon...then onto Béal na mBláth? Maybe then the Journey back to Dublin....from Cobh on a steam boat?
I actually drove the route from Bandon to Béal na mBláth...and just like Collins...had to stop to ask directions.
Thank you. I'll have to get around to a part 3 and a part 4 at some stage, I did these a while back and unfortunately college and stuff got in the way, so I'd have to dig out all my research and such and refresh myself.
I've seen the documentary, and to be honest its misleading, in it 'Sonny ONeill' was more or less named as the killer, however, according to Fr. Patrick Twohig in his book 'The Dark Secret of Beal na Blath', Colm Connoly (whom was behind the docu) later admitted that he had been in two mind about whether it was Sonny or not. There is no solid evidence that places Sonny O'Neill as having taken part in the ambush.
during the war of independance the majority of rebel actions took place in the 26 counties.Ulster had a large loyalist population and counties derry, monaghan fermanagh etc had very little actions. This corkman roused the people to fight.unfortunately some counties didnt answer the call greatly.Only later did they realise their mistake.and yes he was shot by a corkman.Get rid of your hollywood idea of british snipers etc.Such is civil war.
after 800 years ireland took her first steps to freedom from a power that ruled one fourth of the world.if collins made a mistake it was not reporting back to dublin before signing to any deal.this in substance differed little in what de valera belived could have been achieved.
three days later the irish cabinet reject the treaty on the ground that it was sighed under duress(lloyd george had threatened immediate and terrible war if they did not sign)
I wont write down facts to support an opinion, because no matter what is said on a youtube comment somebody will tell you, in a "know it all" fashion that your wrong. But what I will say is that whether you agree or disagree with collins as a political figure, or in any other way, then ask yourself how do you stand up as a person against this man, what have you achieved,i hate seeing his memory insulted by people on a web site.look at yourself who'l know your name 86 years after your death.
I'm sorry, could you be a little clearer with your comment please and just whom it was directed towards? Who is insulting his memory? I certainly hope your not implying that this video is.
Great work i was working in cork today and headed up to beal na blath where mick was shot, i just youtubed beal na blath and this came up. Very informative and good to watch. Brilliant work. I really enjoyed it. Thanks.
I am English and my sister is married to a direct descendant of M Collins . I feel a sense of pride to be connected even in this tenuous way to this great man
very good was left with bated breath. but im sure some assholes (or americans who havent a clue) that think of the republic according to gerry adams will attempt to demean it at some stage.but in reply to some earlier comments he was the nearest we had to freedom, but your negative type gave victory to the brits by slaying him because you were afraid of him achieving your goal hence losing your justification for criminal profits
the nearest we had to freedom? he got us the freedom we have..... wat negitive type u talkin bout? ireland spent so many years fighting that people had to give up. if we had of faught a little more we would of gotten a 32 county republic, in some sences we gave up and in others we won. not every person who faught against mick was doin it for criminal profits. dey were irish men who most spent there lives fighting for a 32 county republic, not a split ireland.
i am an englishman who spent 10 years in the british army. i have a portrait of collins in my living room (alongside john lennon). he was one hell of a man, which ever hilltop your looking from.
Unbelievable a great tribute to the greatest man i thank you and i hope that generations from now he is still mentioned as much then as he should be now Rip we will never forget you.
Croppyboy, thnx for your video's.'Though I'm from the Netherlands I'm fascinated by the figure of Michael Collins. And ofcourse for the values and ideals he fought and unfortunately died for..Thnx again!
Longtime ago our people died fighting for they believed in and this brought a new generation for the people tody. Adams & McGuinness might seem wrong to some but look what they have acheived. NI will be part od SI soon let that be known. Thats why Paisley has agreed to talk
Listen Brothers. Time is now to move on. Forget the past and live for the future. No one will be forgotten, but let our children live a good life and let them remember all our brothers wether they were right or wrong
very well made.how could anyone say anything against michael collens he died for ireland.and what did dev do when he got in2 power fuck all.if dev wanted the north so bad why didnt he send the army up north wile in power instead of setting up court marseille's for the IRA whit some of them ending up getting shot.
Mick wasnt a sell out. the majority of the south since then are the sell outs. im from the north, there's very little patriotism left in the south.dev was the traitor. wasnt even irish.
Hey keelungcw, I'll have more vids in the coming months, so stay tuned. That is a very interesting story, thanks for sharing it, there have been many accounts of drink having been taken 'on route', your account has added to that number, thanks ;o)
Great video... when is the next installment?I remember my grandmother telling the story of how he was in their sitting room in the morning of the day he was shot. My great grand uncle had been shot the previous day. Collins came in to pay his respects. My grandmother and her little sister were playing on the floor in the sitting room and he was pacing up and down the room slapping his gloves off his hand.
The left the house and went next store and starting drinking.
Thanks BearRyan, the footage is from British pathe. Cullyrads, I dont want to spoil the ending, but as I'm sure you know Collins died less than a year after the treaty was signed, he wasnt 'deserting' anyone, the fact remains that he died, so we will never know what would have happened had he lived. But you dont need me telling you that it would take a lot more than Collins to get the North, it was never going to happen, and never will.
He didn't promise anything you idiot. He called the treaty a "stepping stone" to a greater amount of freedom. He was shot dead by his own countrymen less then a year after signing the Treaty on December 6th, 1920. 9 months is hardly enought time to unite a country (where a majority of the northerners want a divided Ireland) and to fight a Civil War against that American alien Éamon deValera. He didn't desert the people of the 6 counties, the boundry commission made the big f*ck with that.
No idiot my friend. Can u tell me, was it OK for him to use British artillery to fire on the IRA who were stationed in the Four Courts? The seeds of the troubles of this county were sown when he brought home that treaty. As I say a TRAITOR.
cullyrads, one thing you have to remember (and what a LOT of people seem to forget) is that Collins wasnt the only man to travel to London for the peace negotiations, it wasnt he alone that signed the treaty. As for the Artillery, was it OK for the anti-treaty men to occupy buildings and prepare for war without trying to sort out the mess?
Thanks Milford06, I appreciate it. The songs are from the Braveheart soundtrack and Celtic Women, they are (in respective order) 'Celtic cry', 'Sons of Scotland' and 'Theme from Harry's Game'
Please make more parts to these videos, they're very well put together.
