I am of the Jewish faith and am exceedingly fond of Andrea Bocelli who, though blind, has been blessed with a magnificent voice. When I listened to his beautiful singing of 'Panis Angelicus', I was moved to tears because it was a humbling experience for me !
Amen. »
I like Bocelli's in many songs, but he is a pop singer. not classically trained voice like Pavarotti. This is composed by Cesar Franck, the 19th century church organist. Before one sings, we must think how the composer would like have it sung. I am sure he would have preferred the way Pavarotti sings. So to judge this classic religious music by mostly headphone listeners of today's cacophonic music will be skewed and incorrect. Maestro Pavarotti sings as though Franck was standing by him.
I have (being agnostic) absolutely nothing to do with any faith or religion whatsoever, but I consider this piece of music to be -definitely- one of the very best songs ever written. I am still looking to discover who managed to write/create this fantastic piece of music!

Mr. Samoorian - I owe you a great apology. I responded to your statement in error. My response was intended for an individual on another blog. pesase accept my apology.
I stated that your "interpretation of history as it pertains to church music" is incorrect. My statement was intended to convey the point that without the Staff, your reference to Bach is not relevant. Without the staff there would be no music today as we know it and probably not at all. I never limited music to the Roman Catholic church, only to the introduction of a critcal and indispensable concept called the STAFF by Pope Gregory.
@chillico1960 I agee. The creation of the "Staff" was a magnificent breakthrough in music; and certainly is the mother of all continuity within the music field today. It is interesting that of the orthodox churches of the east....the Armenian orthodox is the only church that has used polyphonic music for 200 years. The others still use the old monophonic mode. The Armenian orthodox have some incredible compositions. Their Divine Liturgy is superb when done with precision and passion.
Mr. Samoorian - Your interpretation of history as it pertains to church music is incorrect! In the 15th century, Pope Gregory decided that he would apply some continuity to church music being sung at Mass/Holydays. He was responsible for the MUSIC STAFF and one form of the music is referred to as Gregorian Chant. The big "guys" in classical music didn't come along for another 100 to 200 years. Without the staff, the three B's would have been lost.
@chillico1960 I made no interpretation of church music. The history of the development of music in the liturgical structure of the church is long and colorful. It is not limited to the Roman church. There are magnificent odes, chants, etc. in the eastern churches that are equally inspirational. I believe that you misread or misunderstood my statement.
Very impressive. And also very wo Deerfield. Great piece of music... Even though I don't understand.. But I think he is very old yet very very Impressive!! Wish I could meet him
There is something about Andrea Bocelli's voice that makes us understand his songs even though we do not understand the language in which he sings them.
oh well. traits of an amazing amazing artist. Grande.
Could anyone convey the infinite compassion expressed by Jesus's acceptance of his torture and death on the cross with greater tenderness than Andrea Bocelli does, to the perfect music of this hymn?
I am from India and I cant understand the language. When choir enters I started to cry and I cant stop till the song ended. Great choir and great singing by Bochelli. God bless.........
@godwin3006 The angelic bread becomes the bread of men; The heavenly bread ends all prefigurations:
What wonder! The Lord is eaten by a poor and humble servant. Triune God, We beg of you: visit us, just as we worship you. By your ways, lead us where we are heading, to the light in which you dwell. Amen.
Panis Angelicus literally means: this is the Bread for Angels. The Bible says Jews were fed with bread fallen from heaven in the dessert. Jesus is the Messiah born in a township called Bethlehem, which means a town where bread is made. Finally, as Catholics we believe Jesus is really present and hidden in the species of Bread and wine consecrated by the priest.
By the way, you cried, because you received the gift of tears, while listening to this song.
@njizquierdo The love of music is a gift from God. Humanity's powerful love of music is not explained by evolution. No lower animal has the gift. The love of music does not give us a competitive advantage for survival. It's just there and uniquely ours: A gift from God.
@godwin3006 Panis Agelicus means "bread of angels". If Andrea had read your comment, I imagine he would have shed a tear or two, knowing he had brought you happiness. God Bless you.
@godwin3006 the language is Latin......and here is the translation.... Bread of Angels, made the bread of men; The Bread of heaven puts an end to all symbols: A thing wonderful! The Lord becomes our food: poor, a servant, and humble. We beseech Thee, Godhead One in Three That Thou wilt visit us, as we worship Thee, lead us through Thy ways, We who wish to reach the light in which Thou dwellest. Amen.
@godwin3006 This is in Latin and from the early Roman Catholic Church. The translation is Bread of the Angels. It is about God sending Jesus to Earth to be with us. To be our bread our life.
Yes yes yes even before I knew what the words meant I had always knew it was about Jesus and was a comfort that sent one to tears. The music speaks the message without us knowing the words.

The Roman Catholic Church has produced art, music and culture beyond the human imagination. It is above everything and all...and is the supreme servant of God. The Church is incomparable and inimitable in its precision of faith and spirituality. Human kind has no end of sin and digression...but the church shall stand firm in its faith and dedication to the Word of God. An Armenian Orthdox Priest.
@MrSamoorian: I am sorry, but what you say is based on fanaticism... The roman catholic church is stained with many crimes like murder, genocide, robbery and ... Please take some time and read history facts on wikipedia!
You may notice how corrupt your popes were! I am quite sure Jesus is not proud of them!
@MrWhatistrue Pssst I do not know about you but I really enjoy this music. It's a classic. I sing it almost everywhere in the bus, on the wide walk. It gives some spiritual strength singing this song. My hair stand on end. When in the church somebody sings it during communion, my tears fell. What a God send song! May God bless you! By the way it is a problem of the one true church prophesied by St. Anne Emerich (?) 400 years ago. Let's pray for her.
@MrWhatistrue There is not a church, denomination or religion that is untainted. Some of them beyond belief. My assessment was purely an appreciation of the art, culture, music, liturgical form, precision and continuity of the church. Aside from this...every church, including the Roman Catholic has its political, social and human dimensions whose frailties and sinfulness should not reflect upon the creative aspects of the church that are most often quite inspired.
@MrWhatistrue I have read far beyond Wikipedia to get facts. I agree, that individual clergy have betrayed their vocation to commit terrible crimes. This is true of all churches and religions [and everything else]. But there is another aspect of the church that came about through vision, imagination and inspiration...that is the art and music, architecture and dramatic liturgical form that was created through great love and passion for the purpose of inspiring very pious Christians.
@MrSamoorian it's great that you have such a strong belief in the Church, but according to history, the origin of music came from composers such as Bach and those great artists. In fact, it was under the influence of Bach and his genius beyond his years that there came to have the church music you hear today. I would say that the Church really borrowed these ideas from the artists. However, I do agree that this piece definitely possesses something special to touch the hearts of people.
@soul227 Where did Bach get his genius? He'd tell you he got it from God, and if you listen to his work and open your heart you will hear and see God's fingerprints all over it.
@MrSamoorian I'm a Catholic and definitely can't say my way of worship is "supreme to others(line #2 in your comment)". There are ways others worship and I do not know of them all. Do you? Listening to this beautiful in the moment sure makes one a proud catholic but doesn't give the encourage to say words that put others down. Does not what the Catholic church is teaching or is it?
@Physicspilot All churches have much to contribute. Some have spectacular literature and poetry in the piety of their liturgical prayers, hymns, chants and responses. However, in today's world, the Roman Catholic Church stands firm in its mission, the beauty and majesty of its liturgical structure, and its defense of Christianity against those who would like to destroy it. It is powerful and truly Christian in its Apostolic and Universal sense. It sustains the majesty of Christianity.
@RPenta I guess I should have expected the majority of classical listeners to be humorless snobs. I wasn't aware making a joke classifies one as a low-life either.
hey, i like classical music and i thought your joke was ok. i didn't laugh because i get those jokes so much i'm used to them, but i do think it was amusing. and i'm not snobbish. it's not to do with what music people listen to. it's got to do with how irrationally sensitive they are.
@stad97 Yeah I didn't mean it to sound like I was directing that at all classical listeners. I was just basing that off of my flagged comment. Forgive my generalization.
@MantisTobboganMD It's not the classical listeners. Catholics adore the Eucharist as the Most Holy Body of Christ that is, the Eucharist becomes the body of Christ completely in the miracle of transubstantiation. To joke about it like you did is admittedly rather tasteless, juvenile, and rather offensive. I understand that it was "humorous" to you, but it was seriously uncool.
@MantisTobboganMD You are a sick man. By no stretch of the imagination can this be interpreted as humor. I feel confident that you are not a Christian. You are a member of that race that would like to eradicate Christianity. I feel strongly about this because I see this filth on the Media and elsewhere constantly! It is aimed at the most sacred objects of Christianity...Christ, the Holy Mother of God, the Churches, Clergy, etc.
You are a repugnant and filthy member of that filthy race...
@MrSamoorian Thats not a very christian way to talk to people. Aren't Christians supposed to treat others with kindness and tolerance? I don't have a problem with you having your irrational beliefs but do everyone a favor and quit imposing them on others.
Louise Florence and Niall Cahill performed Panis Angelicus at the Living Links Service of Remembrance at Cavan Parish Church on 15th May 2011, remembering friends and relatives who have died by suicide.
@tharisingphoenix69 Firstly, learn how to spell… Secondly this piece is NOT pop! This is a sacred song from way before pop became a genre in music. And lastly, Andrea can decide for himself what he wants to sing, you can have your preferences but leave it at that, as you clearly don’t really know what you’re talking about.
@tharisingphoenix69 -- What?! "wannabe Italian pop." Panis angelicus is the "penultimate strophe" of the hymn Sacris solemniis written by Saint Thomas Aquinas for the Feast of Corpus Christi as part of a complete liturgy of the Feast including prayers for the Mass and the Liturgy of the Hours. "Panis angelicus" (bread of angels) has often been set to music separately from the rest of the hymn. Most famously, in 1872 César Franck set this strophe for voice (tenor).
Bellissimo canto. Uno dei miei preferiti. Il seminario di cui sono alunno (minore diocesano di Brindisi-Ostuni) l'ha eseguito durante la messa di dedicazione della sua Chiesa. C'ero anch'io, a fare la parte dei bassi.
@SpeedyNeutrino43 I'm well aware of Jackie Evancho and couldn't agree more with your comment. However the singer i'm trying to help promote does not have the same oppurtunities as Jackie does from living in the U.S.
@GrandeSalvatore96 Thanks for your brief statement and I think it goes to the very heart of the problem I have read exibited by most comentators here.Music is good when it's good-when it's directed to the lord, even better.I admire Andrea and I think God made him blind to counter balance his very excellent gift in Music, for lack of a better way to phrase my admiration and respect for this great fellow-Remember Beethoven? He is online now!
This hymn is incredibly beautiful and so moving, it was played at my parents wedding many years ago, and I gre up listening to it, it is the strongest of my childhood memories.
Those posting negative comments haven't really heard or listened to this, it is moving, sit quietly, listen and let it in your soul. Even more moving is listening to sung in church, quietly in the background during communion.
This hymn is beautifully moving. It was sung at my parents wedding, I grew up listening to it, it evokes so many memories of my childhood. To hear it in a church is even more moving, Andrea Bocelli is incredible.
Those of you who post negative comments can't really have heard or listened, let it drift into your soul.

I made a one-minute video highlighting a very tiny sample of race-mixing advertisements.
I love white people, and I am opposed to race-mixing. But I do not hate non-whites.

@violinista53 Have a sense of humor, will you?
MantisTobboganMD 7 months ago
@MantisTobboganMD
You are real lowlife. How's that for sense of humor, no class?
RPenta 6 months ago
@RPenta I guess I should have expected the majority of classical listeners to be humorless snobs. I wasn't aware making a joke classifies one as a low-life either.
MantisTobboganMD 6 months ago
@MantisTobboganMD
hey, i like classical music and i thought your joke was ok. i didn't laugh because i get those jokes so much i'm used to them, but i do think it was amusing. and i'm not snobbish. it's not to do with what music people listen to. it's got to do with how irrationally sensitive they are.
stad97 6 months ago
@stad97 Yeah I didn't mean it to sound like I was directing that at all classical listeners. I was just basing that off of my flagged comment. Forgive my generalization.
MantisTobboganMD 6 months ago
@MantisTobboganMD It's not the classical listeners. Catholics adore the Eucharist as the Most Holy Body of Christ that is, the Eucharist becomes the body of Christ completely in the miracle of transubstantiation. To joke about it like you did is admittedly rather tasteless, juvenile, and rather offensive. I understand that it was "humorous" to you, but it was seriously uncool.
gunblader928 6 months ago
@MantisTobboganMD You are a sick man. By no stretch of the imagination can this be interpreted as humor. I feel confident that you are not a Christian. You are a member of that race that would like to eradicate Christianity. I feel strongly about this because I see this filth on the Media and elsewhere constantly! It is aimed at the most sacred objects of Christianity...Christ, the Holy Mother of God, the Churches, Clergy, etc.
You are a repugnant and filthy member of that filthy race...
MrSamoorian 1 month ago
@MrSamoorian Thats not a very christian way to talk to people. Aren't Christians supposed to treat others with kindness and tolerance? I don't have a problem with you having your irrational beliefs but do everyone a favor and quit imposing them on others.

@MantisTobboganMD You're not a Christian. You are a troublemaker.

It is so beautifull to look Andrea Bocelli. Other performers haven´t any chance when they would stand beside him..

Hes great at opra but I hate his wannabe italin pop...he needs to quite tryin to be a popstar and stick with what he is great at
tharisingphoenix69 9 months ago
@tharisingphoenix69 Firstly, learn how to spell… Secondly this piece is NOT pop! This is a sacred song from way before pop became a genre in music. And lastly, Andrea can decide for himself what he wants to sing, you can have your preferences but leave it at that, as you clearly don’t really know what you’re talking about.
MimiChan37 8 months ago
@tharisingphoenix69 And, by the way, this isn't even Italian, it's Latin.
MimiChan37 8 months ago

@simonbassline ...It would be a mistake to overlook Jackie Evancho sing this. She's only 11 now and wil only get better and better as time goes by.

@janefaulk Communion's a good place to move your soul, I agree. To damnation.
