i call myself a witch and i am a male, just so you know that a male witch isnt called a warlock, a warlock means tratior and so on , NOT male witch (incase if anyone didnt know this) i been a male witch for years and years, i been praticing spells to see what works and what does not so far all is 100% working in my field of power but do not and i repeate do NOT abuse the power it will kill you been known to happen.
@zeustruth I'm fully aware that the word warlock refers to being an oathbreaker or someone expelled from a magickal order. It's pretty much a commonplace idea within the community. It's also a great way to tell if someone is bullshitting. If they claim to be a warlock, it means they are full of it,
When I speak to people who don't know about witchcraft well, I refer to things as different names. Spells are rituals/ceremonies,ect. I don't use the word witch with unknowledgeable people because it conjures up fictional characters. I also always have to correct people that Pagans don't always practice witchcraft. I use witchcraft with people who are knowing of the subject. It took some time to get used to the word for me, but it's a fitting umbrella term.
I agree with you 100%. For a long time I have found it difficult to 'label' myself, especially when filling out info forms where they ask for religion. I'll either write pagan or Witch but up until recently I didn't want to write Wiccan as it seems Wicca is kind of limited... I'm still doing my research. I'm ot sure... think i'm lost...
And by the way (didn't mean to get all tangential and ranty,) I liked this video. I'm not entirely sure where I stand on the use of the word, but it's good to see informed, respectful dialogue.

You dont fit in to the normal groups so you find or create these groups for people who did not make it on the cheerleading squad or on the football team ect. The problem comes in when you think that there are some kind of powers you possess that makes you superior to others that you so desperately feel inferior to.
If you'd had the same experiences I've had, then you'd think differently, But right now you're just trying to impose your view on people. Perhaps you should try to think outside the box. Magick is real, I've done many successful spells. If I didn't have empirical evidence that it worked, I wouldn't do it.
Hey, friend, we're not stomping around yelling that Christians just follow bastardized traditions of older belief systems out of a habitual need to belong to the greater flock. We could if we felt the need, but for the most part we keep to ourselves.
How about dealing with the personal inadequacies that drive you to harass the belief systems of perfect strangers for the sake of making yourself feel superior?

Another person, who is desperately trying to find their identity in separating themselves from the normalcy of society just to get attention. Goths, Pagans, wiccan, druids, or whatever it is that seems to make you feel like you fit in, is nothing more than a way to make you overcome your feelings of inadequacies.
How do you explain solitary practicioners, then? Many Wiccans practice by themselves and don't even look for a coven. If it were a fitting in thing, you'd think they'd look for a group. It's a religious conversion. Your comments are disrespectful and they will be removed if deemed so. I have a no tolerance policy for bigotry.
@edteach2u Unfortunately, many younger pagans are caught up in the allure of all of this and go into it as a way to make them sound special. So, I can agree with you to some extent. Don't judge us all by those people. There are many reasons for one to believe in this subject. I'd take a peak at quantum mechanics, the law of attraction, and string theory if you want logical reasons for why one would partake in witchcraft.People have been doing ritual craft since ancient times,it's not a fad.
I think the biggest issue with all these types of terms, whether religious or otherwise, is that people forget that language is not a static, stagnate thing, but a living, evolving one. The general meaning of words is not always, nor solely, determined by it's definition in a dictionary. Common usage also defines words, in most ways more so, and more often than not the common usage is ever changing to fit the needs of the "modern" society using it.
I've always interpreted it from the latter also. The wise woman tradition, was an integral part of most cultures, until as you point out it came under the radar of the church, who utilized the persecution and slaughter of these innocent people, to further their manufacture of demons among us oppression, and a way of silencing through fear any questioning of the church.
Once again a video I actually liked, enjoy and don't have any argument. Me personally (obviously I'm not a witch lol) I see the term witch as a Secular magickal user...Although many people confuse me royally when you get into Wiccan verus Witch...the whole thing is just complicated LOL
I've heard people use the Ron Hutton material to justify ridiculing people who identify as Witches, and no disrespect to Mr Hutton intended, he's a great historian. But there are many reasons why to identify with that term. Thanks for your comments.
What gets me on things like that is why people feel the need to be so overly concerned with what other people want to identify with or call themselves. How could it possibly be any of their concern or have any type of effect of them at all. There are many people in the world today that really need to simply "mind their own houses" and let others alone. If ever there was a time to chant "and harm ye none" the slamming of another for identifying with a WORD would be it.

Witch is thrown around, huge media emphases, varying definitions.
How many times have you heard Wiccan and Pagan not in a religions aspect?
Witch can be applied to Wicca, it always had been, just be prepared to give an explanation.

Not just wise woman though. Wicca was wise man, and wicce was wise woman ("cc" is pronounced tch in either case)
