I bought the spare drivers from ebay and other polkies. Polk sells replacement 6.5" drivers that sound exactly the same but they don't look the same. I want true original replacements.
But in 2004 Polk Audio spent 2 mill on coming out with the RD0-194 & RD0-198's, those replace the SL2000 & SL3000 tweeters because the originals had a slight flaw that they couldn't get rid of in the 80's because of no computer technology.
So the tweeters are new from Polk and the Drivers are used old original
Lasareath - These videos you've posted on your Polk SDA SRS 1.2 TL's sure bring back a lot of memories for me. They are not easy to find now. The question I have is when you were bringing your 1.2 TL's back to life, were you able to get the replacement parts from Polk long after the speaker line was discontinued? How long ago did you rebuild these? Sometimes I see these for sale that need work. I want t make sure I can get the parts from Polk if I buy a pair of these.
@rsenzel Hi,I know of two pairs that just were sold within the past 2 months. And they were in mint condition. What you need to do is join the forum at Polk Audio andwebsite then you'll be able to keep an eye on the Flea Market section and you'll get notice about a sale right away. As Polkies we update a Thread of Polk Audio speakers we all find on the web everyday as well.
I rebuilt these 4 to 5 years ago.
I bought spare MW's (that's the 6.5" drivers) (continued above)
@jfrank417 I'm picking up a Musical Fidelity Tri-Vista 300 next week. It will be replacing my Adcom Pre and Carver Amps. It will be Levels above the Carvers. I am currently using a new to me Raysonic CD168 and I will be getting New MIT speaker cables as well. So all my Interconnects and Speaker cables will be MIT.
Love your Polk vids! Check out my Polk Monitor 10 video I posted recently here on YouTube. I am driving them with a Qinpu tubed integrated amp, and the sound is unreal! I am not sure which tweeters I am using though. Could you tell me just by looking at my vid? I was told the original 'peerless' tweeters on early Monitor 10's are superior to the latter SL-2000 ones. Is this true? Thanks.
@TerdFurg3zon The 29 cent mic on my digital camera could not handle the amount of pressure that the speakers create and so it sounds like shit. There was so much pressure that you could feel your internal organs moving!
and just for the record, whoever originally paid the $3200 for them when they were new and let them get like they were when you bought them should be taken out behind a woodpile and shot in the face!
@svtcontour They come up for sale pretty often, you should be able to find at least 2 pairs per month that are for sale either on ebay or on the polk audio forums.
Nice job Lasareath! I have a pair of Polk RTA11t's myself, that I modified to allow more cone excursion and less mid-bass coloration. They sound great!
I regret however that I never had the money for the SDA's :(
Wow! I just checked out your restoration of these speakers when you replied to one of my threads over at polk forum. Absolutely amazing and beautiful speakers. Great job on the wood work, I can't believe someone would take such horrible care of speakers like the original owner did...I think I have speaker envy lol.
Yeah something was wrong with the original owner, most likely his cats effed them all up. I keep them in a locked room. My cats know not to go in there!
only a mere 600 watts... good ol polk audio:) my dad has some RTA 12-c's and I want them, they sound wonderful. I've always wanted to hear these you have too and wanted a pair because they're so big:))
OH MAN!!!!!!!! That would be so awesome, but I live in Dothan Alabama:( I wish I could come up though, it'd be worth the trip just to touch them lol plus I'm out of work, but I'd so come up if I had the money and the time, I'm a full time sudent. I might just hold you to that though haha. I'd love to hear them. plus I've seen your equipment and Carver is quite the Amp!!! that's an awesome pair of speakers. maybe I'll get lucky and get a pair one day. but really I've decide any of the SDA is good
You should join the forums at polk audio and talk SDA with us. there's a bunch of us there and there may be some polkies near you if you want to hear some SDA's
If you ever make it out to NYC just let me know, I'm only 20 miles away from NYC.
He should redo the crossovers since the Caps & Resistors degrade over time. Usually all caps and resistors should be replaced after 20 years. I re-did mine with all american made caps & resistors. Sonicaps & Mills resistors. If he joins the Polk Audio forum he can get instruction on exactly what to purchase and how to do the upgrades
He should also consider upgrading the tweeters, the tweeters Polk came out with in 2004 are far more superior than the originals.
I was SO moved by the nostalgia of your rebuild photos, I just called my best friend, whom I had sold my mint condition 'Monitor 10s' to years ago, to buy them back. He said yes! And he only used them a few times and had them stored properly. I'm picking them up tonight! Only $300 the pair, which is $100 less than what he paid me!
'Lasareath', I just finished looking at your step by step photos of your 1.2TL restoration. One word: AMAZING!!! I was thoroughly entertained! What a total 'labor of love'!
Great speakers! My dad had a set of 2.3's may years ago. I loved them. So much so I bought a pair of 1.2's last year with upgraded caps. There is truly no better speaker.
Two Carver TFM-35X's, One powers the tweeters and the other powers the mid-bass drivers (the 6.5" drivers)
The 15" Drivers on these Polks are Passive. they do not have magnets. they move with the pressure that is built up in the speaker cabinet by the (8) 6.5" drivers that are in each speaker.
@gtalover139 Currently I am using a Musical Fidelity Tri-Vista 300. It has an external Power Supply that weighs 35LBS and the Amp weighs in at 85LBS. It pushes 500 watts per channel. At the time this video was recorded I was using an Onkyo receiver and two Carver TFM-35X's!
The Musical Fidelity came out in 2003 and back then it was $7000.00!!! You can find them on Audiogon for around $2500 now.
Join the forums because you'll need our help rebuilding the ones you find or you may get lucky and get a pair that is already rebuilt.
I finished my repair of these in Dec of 2007 when I recorded this Video. Have you seen my photo album?

I would suggest getting the carver m-4.0t amp to properly power these, I guarantee the next block over would hear them loud and cllear

Nice classic combination of Carver an Polk. I used to sell those very brands back in the 80s/90's. Brings back some very good memories.
spishco 2 years ago
Where did you sell them at?
Lasareath 2 years ago
A small, now defunct, retail chain in Ontario Canada called HiF2000.
spishco 2 years ago
Ahh Ok, Yeah a lot of places have gone under, I had a Friend named Doug who sold these at Atlantic Stereo in East brunswick NJ
I went in there almost everyday to listen to their systems and dream about owning all that great equipment!

I bought Monitor 10's for $125
For $300 you can get a pair of SDA 2A's
For $350 to $500 you can get a pair of SDA 1C's

Explain the bi-amp to me do you have two amps per speaker?
jazzzco 3 years ago 2
I have (2) Custom made 36" All Silver Y cables that split the pre-outs from my reciever.
Each TFM-35X is run in Stereo. One TFM-35X powers the tweeters for both speakers and the other powers the mid-woofers (6.5")
