  • I thought he would come in with a cane...sorry, too used to house.

  • To put everybody straight regarding whether there is such a thing as a British accent or not: Of course there is such a thing as a British accent as there is such a thing as a British person. Any accent that comes from the British Isles is a British accent when refered to generally and when not wanting to be SPECIFIC to a certain region. English, Welsh and Scottish accents are all British accents as they come from Britain. No Brit accent? Then no French, Italian or American accents either.

  • @dontbothertoreadthis you have to remember that wales england ireland and scotland are different countries also, so they get more bothered when they are bunched together. So its more like refering to an australian accent as a new zealand accent, or an american to a canadian.

  • @korgath1988 - All of those British Isles nations shouldn't get bothered when bunched together. You can bunch together American and Canadian accents by saying a person has a North American accent (when being general) which is what you should say to a person with such an accent before they can be specific to you about which part of North America they come from. Aussies and Kiwis have Antipodean accents, speaking generally. England, Wales and the English have British accents generally speaking.

  • Hugh Laurie must get fed up of hearing that music everytime he walks in for an interview

  • lol he did the same joke with the cockroach on letterman!:D

but damn i still love this man soo much<33

  • For some reason Americans find the English accent a novelty, however we Brits find the American accent loathsome.

  • @MrReasonFTW not true

  • @ManlnCognito Ok in my experience.

  • @MrReasonFTW That is your opinion then, but dont speak for the rest of us. I quite like some American accents

  • @ManlnCognito Chill I meant no offence

  • First of all it's they're not 'there' so consider yourself the thick twat. I never suggested England Scotland and Wales are states, I am well aware that they are countries having lived here all my life so get off your high horse and stop calling people thick twats because you don't sound too bright yourself.

  • You can have a "British accent" as that term is a collective of all the accents which comprise the full gamete of accents in Britain. Although from city to city there are different accents we can hardly expect our American friends to know them all! Don't be so anal about it... Mmmm anal sex!

  • @ninjatoothpaste Besides, us Brits say 'American accent' regardless of what state they come from. I mean we don't say you've got a Kansas accent, or a Phoenix accent do we. Most American accents sound pretty much the same to anyone outside the US anyway besides New York which in my opinion is the nicest sounding American accent.

  • @TheFever77 No way is new york "Nice" sounding New yorkers are not nice lol.

  • @notdeadjustlazy I always thought it was a myth that people weren't as nice in London as where I live, I went to London not long back and they really were full of attitude :o In the underground tube station I was a bit lost and people were practically walking into me and then looking at me as though it was me getting in the way when I was pressed up against the wall and couldn't go anywhere to avoid them! I imagine New York to be America's arsehole capital in the same way?

  • @TheFever77 true, but, scotland/n ireland and wales are not states there are countries which make up britain you thick twat. they should say english accent

  • This interview was very annoying.. Regis and kelly both kept cutting him off. They didnt get the title of the movie right..its Mosters VS Aliens..not Monsters and aliens.. And they're laughs...omfg! Love hugh laurie..he's awsome and very talented. Beyond House and The Band From TV.

  • he's so humble =D

  • It is nice to see him without a cane and a limp. :) Gotta love him... I love his movies (all the way back to "Jeeves and Burty Wooster" :)

  • I wish we Americans could look beyond LA or NY now and then. Laurie happened to be a pretty big deal long before house. Blackadder III & IV, Jeeves and Wooster, Frye and Laurie. All very popular in the UK going back 20-something years. While you're on youtube check them out.

  • they keep on asking him the same questions everywhere. feel a bit sorry for him =/

  • @ptpewner Also they seem to always play the same song when introducing him.

  • I hate that fucking woman!!!!!! She is so not necessary. And so annyoing.

  • Hugh was brough up in the Scottish presbyterian church and his family were Scottish. I can tell by his name and I just checked it and sure enough I'm right.

There are lots of Scots living in England because London is where you go to ''make it big'' in the UK rather like people go to L.A. or N.Y. in the states to make it big.

  • I wonder if these two presenters, when asked, could tell the difference between English, British, Welsh, Scottish, Irish, Great Britain and the United Kingdom...

  • @Emmamoo

The average American can tell the difference between English and Irish, but not Scottish and Irish and almost none of them even know what a Welshman is, nor what they sound like.

I can tell the difference between a Cockney accent and "normal" English (knowing there are several other English accents), as well as Scottish and Irish brogues, but for the life of me, I haven't a clue what a Welsh accent sounds like.

  • @morpheusxnyc

The guy who played in Silence of the Lambs is Welsh. Tom Jones is Welsh and Joe Calzhagi is Welsh (even though his father is Italian).

  • ahahahahah, those shows are all the same, HE MUST BE SOOO FED UP WITH THESE STUPID YANKS ASKING THE SAME SHIT!

  • they ask the same frieking questions !

about oxford and cambridge, about his dad being a gold medalyst, about his accent...

  • this is the worst show, the hosts are so fake, im surprised they are not wearing american-flag-colored suits

  • 4:31 -> "But I sense just a little bit of a British accent here."

... WHY do people still speak of a "British accent"?? There is no such thing as a British accent! It's either English (in Laurie's case) or Scottish or Irish or Welsh. To say someone's got a British accent is about as logical as saying someone from Mexico has got an American accent just because Mexico is part of the North American continent.

  • @EnigmaDrath

    I love your comment.

    couldnt agree more.

  • @ad0460 not a logical comparation... Mexico official language is not the same as USA

  • The logic is as follows: Spanish and English are spoken by more non-Spaniards and non-Brits than by the originators.

And the way it's spoken has evolved into a common non-standardized dialect that's more popular than the original root language.

So when Mexicans/Dominicans/Panamanians/Cubans hear a Spaniard speak Spanish, they hear his "Spanish accent" because it's foreign sounding to them.

Likewise when we hear Brits speak English, it's sounds foreign to us - hence the "accent" comment.

  • Very nicely explained. As an English person living in London it kinda irks me when Americans question British people on certain words or phrases that we use or say we have accents because I think , hello! You speak ENGLISH!! American is not a language. But your point makes perfect sense.

  • @EnigmaDrath Well, there is British English and there is American English- so if you're saying someone speaks BE ur definetely not talking about the ancient Irish or Welsh language- same goes for the accent I guess, so it is kinda logical to speak of a British accent when in fact you mean the English one.

  • @Sickoflifebandleader yh - but ENGLISH as in FROM ENGLAND - calling it 'british' could be taken as offensive to the Scots, Welsh and northern Irish

  • @EnigmaDrath

THANK YOU! somebody who appreciates geographical accuracy.

  • if i was scottish and told you have a brit accent by a yank i would reply "well so do you, you uneducated prick, i`m scottish speeking english with a scottiah accent". luckily im english lol j/k

  • @EnigmaDrath - You're partly right. The way Hugh Laurie speaks is (roughly) what's known as Received Pronunciation. It's not perfect RP or he wouldn't have sounded any different in Jeeves and Wooster to how he does speaking naturally as that was perfect RP. It can be found all over Britain but most commonly in England, hence calling it an English accent being right. But as the prevailing historical accent of BBC presenters, it's still thought of by non-Brits as a British accent. (cont)

  • @EnigmaDrath - Incidentally, Brits who heard someone speak that way without knowing where they were from would probably call it a Southern accent, particularly ones from the North of England. Then again, I'm from the North so maybe that's why I think that. Btw, I researched most of the stuff I just said in the last 1/2 hour and it's just gone 12:30am here so if I'm wrong, I'm sorry.

    Kayleigh

  • @EnigmaDrath Why? Because it IS still English. To distinguish between all the variants of English we say that someone has got a British accent, an American accent, an Australian accent (do you want me to continue?). And you made the wrong comparison I think: to say that someone from Mexico has got an American accent would be like saying that someone from England or Britain has got a European accent.

  • they speak to him like they've never spoken to an English person before.

  • i love him as prince regent in blackadder third!! (and i love my british accent!!)

  • haha it's kind of amazing how he can sound perfectly american in House, but then have a british accent otherwise

  • i hate that fake-laugh-bitch

  • @VilleLehmus

    you mean regis?

  • Why are Americans so fascinated with British people?

  • hahaha your comment amuses me

  • Good question. I'm British. I have a very strong British accent. The Americans find it very amusing. :)

  • can you do an american accent? like seriously, I had no idea House was British. I also didn't know the guy from 11th hour was British! What other cool guy is british?

  • Stephen Moyer (Bill from True Blood) is British.

  • @NovemberLittleWing tim roth from lie to me :>>

  • Because British people are AWESOME.

  • @TheFever77

Well, our nation was founded by Brits, so it's kind of like looking back to your ancestral roots - politically, if not anthropologically.

I mean, today we're of all different races, ethnicities and nations of origin, but the lineage of our democracy flows from England, so there's a sort of subtextual umbilical cord to Mother England in the national subconscious.

  • @morpheusxnyc

There's a lot of Scotland and Ireland and Wales too. Andrew Carnegie was a Scot. Hugh Laurie is a Scottish name. It wouldn't surprise me if his father or grandfather were from Scotland.

  • @morpheusxnyc

Not many Americans know that George Washington was once a British army officer.

  • @TheFever77 We aren't. We merely do it to make up for that time we kicked your asses that one time in history.

  • @theycallmefibb So lame. This isn't a US v UK battle.

  • nope, not sure what you mean at all.

I meant in a letterman interview on youtube (different show) he asks him about his fathers rowing career and what the person in the boat is called, to which Hugh replies, "the cox", which gets a cheap laugh. I was simply pointing out that (IMO) Hugh avoids saying the word "cox" because he knows it will just get a cheap laugh.

No offense but I don't know what tangent you were going down.

  • I know but they blatantly tried to get him to say it for a cheap laugh.

I think its letterman who asks him the same question and gets him to say it. He avoids it by saying "yes, thats an option, you can tick that box".

  • he is awesome. i would love to meet him. he really inspires me!!!!!!!

  • Lol, love it how they try and get a laugh from the word "cox", but they fail. (1:52)

  • i have this feeling that regis is hitting on hugh.

  • after watching House so many times this is really strange to hear.

  • wow sexy accent. total different voice from House

  • I agree with AlrightBert :)

  • i love the fact they played "our house" by madness as he walked in... :D

  • He sounds a lot more pleasent with his English accent somehow.

  • Hugh Laurie is just way too witty and intelligent in this interview for these two amateurs.

  • He is the most famous person that begins with Hugh on youtube. Best actor, love his accent, and love his American accent as well. Wow, his pa was near that bastard Hitler!

  • i love how when they made a joke about "House found a Home in House'' Hugh just looked at him like, You Twit!

ha ha ha ha oh i love Hugh to death

  • i am loving thia british accent omg itz so cute

  • This is BEAUTIFULLLL. All thats missing is Lisa Edelstein! :) <3

  • I'm glad to see he's still got the British accent, i would hate it if the american accent started to creep in there.

  • however he is a name because of America...God forbid he sounded American....

  • He was a "name" long before the American film industry realized he existed. Ever heard of Jeeves and Wooster? Blackadder? Really now...

At any rate I love his American accent. And his natural one. I guess I just kind of love his voice overall. :)

  • no he's not, he was a star before he even went to america

you just don't look outside your own country

  • @fletchdies

Yes, House brought him international attention, but even though I love the show I will always favour his earlier comedies. He wasn't some struggling actor who finally broke through thanks to this one show: he was already an established and well-loved legend in the UK (and Europe). He wasn't exactly starving for recognition and fame. House just introduced him to an audience that was missing out on his talents.

  • @EnigmaDrath wasn't he in black hatter? i just remember in english class, the teacher showed us the episode where they re enacted "the taming of the shrew"

  • technically its not to hard to change ones accent around. im Caribbean i have the accentr when i speak to caribbean people or my family or people who dont know me. but when im in school in usa and i talk to teachers and students i use my american accent its quite fun. ex specially since american accent is easier to pick up.

  • gregory house is my HERO lol hugh laurie is a great actor

  • I watched several interviews with Hugh and it's a bit nervous when he answered the same questions all the time. Great actor :)

  • Dad to a mouse in "Stuart Little"; voice for Dr. Cockroach.. welcome to Mr. Laurie's Zoo---lol! Funny clip! =)

  • I cannot get over how well so many English (and Australian) actors can do American acceents and then when they are themselves, sound so completely differrent.

Amazing linguistics. (and probably a good voice coach, too), but how many American actors have English parts?

  • Its sad he's not known for his comedy genius over there.....also sad that the bloke interviewing them I still don't know his name and only know him off Hope & Faith :S

Him n Stephen Fry were a gr8 comedy act

  • Pair of plastic idiots interviewing him

  • Regis & Kelly, King and Queen of the benign

  • Aww he has an accent, thats sooo cute. What a great actor!!! I love him

  • she is seriously annoying and really quite thick

  • omg i feel like im going to puke if another american thinks he 'hides his accent well' on house, he doesnt hide his accent on house, he puts on an american accent lol

  • Back in the mid 1980's he was in the awesome Blackadder series. You can find many clips of a that on YouTube as well.

  • really? what episodes? cause i love hugh laurie. and blackadder!

  • He was on loads.

  • ha i wiki'd it and realised who he was :| wow. he looks different, but not.

  • @tiaamacheer he is one of the main characters in Blackadder 3rd (prince regent). But he is in all the Blackadder series' playing different characters.

A bit of Fry and Laurie is amazing too.

  • god regis is an idiot. "British Voice" hahah

  • he's such an amazing actor!! he has such an british accent but on the show he seems like a full out american

  • kinda weird seeing him walking without the cane

  • He's so different from Greg House, which only shows that he's good actor.

  • holy shit he hides his accent good!

  • oooo i do love a bit of laurie . . . and fry of course. they are pure geniuses probably my favourite comedians when they get together

  • never knew he was balding

  • he's been balding since his thirties.

  • u americans like hugh laurie? then search on youtube for blackadder

  • WOW, his accent. I would have never thought it would have sounded like that based on house. Hes like totally different. To be able to hide your accent like that is a true actor.

  • All I can say is: welcome to the world outside of USA.

  • lool totally

  • He is so charming. I'm brittish, but his accent is so nice.

    He look's great for 50...

  • He's fifty?!?! fuck....

  • He's a very good actor. epsecially to be able to do it in an accent that isn't your own.

  • He does a great American accent.

(I know there's no "standard" American accent; you know what I mean.)

  • He looks really tired. I bet he is considering the busy House schedual, not to mention the rabid fans that must be fawning over him all the time, and the interviewers who always ask him the exact same questions over and over and over and OVER...

But he still manages to be charming and polite. And that's what I love about him! That and the accent...;P

    MvA and House ftw! :D

  • wow he said crips and bloods wow

  • Who cares

  • He got SUCH a cheer :)

  • hugh is fiiiiiiiit as fuuuuck. i would.

i hope his accent don't change :( he still lives here in UK yea?

  • ya... When he's filming house he lives in an apartment in L.A. but when he's not filming for House or any other project he's home in the UK.... i believe...

  • no he lives in america now

  • I totally sympathise with Laurie's state of bemusement and discomfort, at this constant merry-go-round of banal presenters and non-interviews.

  • Now... I'm British and believe it or not, this is my first time seeing one of "Regis(& Kelly)" 's interviews... I find myself rather perplexed as to her purpose beyond general eye-candy.

Hugh Laurie was great as per usual though. Going through great strains not to utter coxless pairs.

  • lol ... you'te totally right, the parenthesis in Regis(& Kelly) is completely appropriate. Regis has actually changed several times of hosting partner...

You're comment of coxless pairs was in reference to letterman's interview a few years back right? That was brilliant. Not many people rembember that, but it was absolutely hilarious

  • ... I swear he has a limp. I think I saw him limp. My world is falling apart.

  • damn they don't even show that bold spot on house

  • Happy 50th birthday Hugh!! 11 june 2009

  • hey!! that's right!!! thanks for posting that comment, I totally forgot!!

    Happy birthday hugh!

  • The timbre of his voice is a lot like Marilyn Manson's. Think about what I said before being hostile.

  • All straightness aside, the man is looking increasingly handsome in his middle age.

  • Dr. Cockroach ? What was that ? Haven't heard of it. When was the movie released?

  • he's talking about the animated movie "Monsters vs Aliens", in which he's the voice of Dr. Cockroach.

Came out around march-april of 09, right about the time he did this interview (it was part of promoting the movie and all that stuff)

  • Right. "Now he is the voice of the insect-headed Dr. Cockroach in the new animated film Monsters vs Aliens" at the beginning. Hadn't heard it the first time.

Nice interview by the way. Hugh is a nice guy, always doing great in interviews.

  • It's so fitting that they play "Our House" lol.

  • he looks tired... poor guy, I hope he gets a break.

  • i think he is hot

  • He is SO HOT!!!!;0)

  • oh he is adorable!

  • I feel bad for him. It must be the millionth time he's told he was a oarsman on a talk show. I'll be pulling my hair out by now.

  • yeahmn, i know , they always ask him the same stupid questions, too bad

  • I care about the fiddle! I'm a fiddle player!lol, it must get really boreing being asked the same questions all the time!

  • i love the interview!

  • This is a GREAT interview - stuff I didn't know before! I didn't think I was at all interested in MvA until now!!

I was so suprised when I came to realize that Hugh Laurie was in Stuart Little as well as the dad - long before House, MD. Makes me want to revisit the movie!

  • i LOVEEEEEEEEEEEE HUGHHHHHHHHH LAURIEEEEEEEEE.........SO SEXY :)

  • I've got mad love for him too!

    :P

  • I've been waiting for someone to post this! Thanks!

  • I LOVE this man..... :P

I love it when he's in new york and gets to give interviews... regis & kelly, letterman... he's so busy filming house so he's always on LA

I'm glad he made monsters vs aliens, it's such a break for him, both making the movie and then promoting. Now I get to see the movie and watch all the interviews!!! and house too!!!!

    thanks!!!!!!!!!

  • Awesome!!!

Hugh is SO funny i just love him so much!!

I've been looking for this interview... thanks so much for posting it!!!!!!

  • Thankx 4 Posting This!!!

Hugh is a Really Great Guy!!!
