  • Does anyone else think Dan and Kevin are really cute? Too bad I think they're married.

  • During the penny arcade D&D podcasts, there had been talks of hopefully getting vin diesel to join their party. That would have been AWESOME!

Oh and, I would love to see Jack Black play D&D... I bet it'll be hilarious :D

  • God damn dnd is fucking amazing....if the dm is a good storyteller and the players don't douche it up this sounds spool fucking fn

  • Pathfinder > 4th ed

  • oh and 4th edition. fuck that shit

  • @kentparkhurst 4th ed is ok actually I like it but AD&D will always be my preference.

  • only problem is they arent drinking

  • the previouse group went down and were forced to watch 8 legged freaks and they all commited suicide from watching such i horroble movie

  • what version are they playing? i hope its 4th...anyone?

  • @ThePocket5 yeah its 4ed

  • 99.99% of people who either say D and D is retarded or horrible have never drawn up a character or role a d20 to do a random skill or attack roll, they either just watched a group of people play or just assume that its as a buddy of mine called it "the antipunn"...I say if you diss on something you should at least try it out or read up about it..at least in D and D its never ending..

  • 8:14 Seth Green walking around the table in the background saying,:You guys are fuckin' retarded" XD

  • @Uberdude1010 honestly I can't be completely objective because I grew up with 3rd edition. Also not many people actually play 4th; Pathfinder has been game of the year at Gen con the last 2 years I've gone and it was pretty depressing seeing no one at the 4th edition kiosk. I mean they are doing pretty terrible in profits and understanbly they would. They killed the game, I mean who wants to play a dungeons and dragons game where a wizard can miss with his magic missile, that's just depressing.

  • I think Bards are in 4th edition, it's too bad that they are learning D&D from 4th edition. 3.5 would be a much better exposure for them. Down with 4Th!

  • @jebus671

While I learned to play D&D through 3.5, learning the game through 4th edition is definitely easier to do. And if 4th edition was as bad as you make it out to be, then why do people play it? If you look at 4th edition as a separate game, and not try to hold it to some past standard, then it holds up rather well. I still enjoy 3.5 more, and Pathfinder even more so than 3.5, but I wouldn't shut out 4th just because its different.

  • bards is not in 4th edition right? so they are playing 3.5 or 3.0 right?

  • Now have played D&D very little and i must say i have enchanted by this...and this is the red box..if i had known about this many moons ago i would be much deeper into it..but 20 bucks for this kind of fun..im all in

  • I model my Dm-ming methods after the master of table control and fun, Chris Perkins!

  • i wouldve run a knowledge check on that spider bit, just sayin

  • this reminds me of BlueXeophos' Shadow of Israphel :D

  • go to 7:48. look in the back.

  • Thumbs up if u agree that this is a great way for all ages to exercise their math skillz and reading skillz

  • @neshvadshahin Math? Reading? How about IMAGINATION. The math and reading is very light in 4e. I've never tried THACO, mind you.

  • @Badon124 it was actually alot of fun (calculating thaco), I haven't played since 2nd edition rules so i really couldn't compare it to the new stuff though.

  • @neshvadshahin and imgaination

  • @neshvadshahin When you spell skills with a Z, no.

  • @grantlaven Nerd.

  • DM: J.R.R. Tolkein

    PLayers: Ian Mckellen

    Christopher lee

    Jeremy Irons

Anyone else I should put here for the most amazing D&D game evar?

  • @edgeypoosisepic You forgot the most important Player. Bruce Cambell. Now that would be badass as fuck.

  • @edgeypoosisepic oh yea

  • @edgeypoosisepic Umm....Tolkein died about 40-50 years ago.

  • @BucketListBrah You broke the first rule of D&D: use your imagination :>

  • @edgeypoosisepic GRRM as DM, BECAUSE HE'S ALIVE!!!!!! And a far surperior writer by all accounts, and much more respected. Tolkein is a legend, but doesn't hold up to GRRM. After Game of Thrones series, I believe the world also feels the same

  • @edgeypoosisepic

    Carl Sagan

  • @edgeypoosisepic Jesus

  • @edgeypoosisepic Lewis Carrol.

  • @edgeypoosisepic Tim Curry, Guierrmo del Toro,

  • @edgeypoosisepic Change DM to Chris Perkins. :P

  • @edgeypoosisepic George R.R. Martin

  • @edgeypoosisepic George R. R. Martin, that's who.

  • @edgeypoosisepic I'm sorry but i'd rather hve Chris as DM

  • @edgeypoosisepic Vin Diesel?

  • @edgeypoosisepic jeremy irons? seriously dude

  • @edgeypoosisepic I'd add Patrick Stewert, James Earl Jones, Sean Connery, and Morgan Freedman.

  • @edgeypoosisepic

    OR

    DM: George R.R. Martin

    Players: Patton Oswalt (warlock)

    Brian Posehn (warrior)

    Bill Burr (rouge)

    Pat Dixon (cleric)

  • @thesearntlittlekids Oh God yes. A D&D game of stand-up comedians and a fantasy legend as DM? EPIC.

  • @edgeypoosisepic David Warner reprising his role from baldurs gate 2

  • @edgeypoosisepic They'd all be sorcerers. They would die SO quickly.

  • @edgeypoosisepic

    Steven (Stephan?) Walkin

    maybe Eoin Colfer

  • @edgeypoosisepic I'd just love to hear an audio recording of a game like that. The voices alone...

  • @edgeypoosisepic j.k. rowling as wizard

  • @edgeypoosisepic Hitler. He could be a bard and convince all the humans that they should band togeather and get ride of the halfling merchants who are stealing their money! (I'm a horrible person)

  • @pcgamernum1 lol

  • @ROCK1NNROLL1N Good to meet another horrible person. :D

  • @edgeypoosisepic Viggo Mortensen and Peter Jackson

  • @edgeypoosisepic you need christopher walken.

  • @edgeypoosisepic George R. R. Martin and Christopher Paolini

  • @edgeypoosisepic Jonathon Rhyese Davies and Cate Blanchette

  • @edgeypoosisepic Yeah, four different people.

  • @edgeypoosisepic John Rhys-Davies and Viggo Mortensen. One's an amazing story teller and the other knows poetry, songs, swordfighting and horseriding.

  • @edgeypoosisepic Gary Gygax obviously

  • @edgeypoosisepic Gary Oldman

  • @edgeypoosisepic Wrong,DM: J.R.R. Tolkein with Morgan Freeman's voice

  • 7:44 Pika boo,,, who is that back there???? its scaring me

  • if you ask me, they should have animated this partly, going inbetween actually playing the game, and whats happening in the game, like enemies and certain things that would be funny...

  • i am just starting to get into DnD [Pathfinder really]... are they playing 4th edition, or 3.5? I think it is 3.5 but I am too much of a n00b to tell.

  • @Pgaither84 4th

  • @Pgaither84 looks like 4th

  • @Pgaither84 Dungeoneering, definitely 4e.

  • man, chris perkins is an AWESOME dm!

  • eww he produced thw whine and why would she try to poison you when your helping her

  • One time when i was playing D&D with my friends, one of my friends rolled to slap our employer. When he did slap him, he rolled a 20 and knocked the employer out. funniest day ever.

  • Dwarven wizard. I can no longer take this seriously.

  • these videos are the reason i started playing d&d :D

  • I do not play D&D but have heard it many times..i searched this up and listened..I was pulled in by the story and i want to start playing!

  • whos the rogue behind the wall at 7:45? LOL

  • @Surbrus Never really experienced that problem. Just gotta make sure everyone is thinking about what they're gonna do before their turn. There are lots of ways to speed up combat as well. Such as reducing monster hp and increasing the damage they do. Makes combat faster, but more deadly. The monsters from the MM3, Dark Sun creature catalog, and the Monster Vault basically do this.

  • God knows I love the insight that comes from group role play, even if it IS frightening enough here, where for the briefest of moments a bunch of business minded adults were a bee's dick away from turning the adventure down....because it sounded risky.

    Honest. Sincere.

    Telling.

  • yay for 3.5 and sorcerers!

  • Is this 4.0?

  • This is what I´ve been MISSING AROUND HERE ON YOUTUBE !

  • This DM is so insanely good at what he does I feel shamed beyond comprehension.

  • @DiosGX He should be. He is the creative designer for D&D, afterall. :P

  • Hey i want to start playing D&D and i was wondering if there were any groups and such in Melbourne Australia just to teach me the rules and and introduction.

  • Booze.Id be immediately in, right there.

  • "face- ace -ace -ace" ROFL

  • "Make a knowledge... err.. dungeoneering check."

Yeah, i get caught trying to ask for skill checks from 3.5 all the time myself. =)

  • is he wearing a penny arcade t shirt

  • wanna check out that stone face.. ace ace ace LOL

I am a DM myself for 3.5 and i just gotta say D&D is just awesome and this is a good

example of very laid back but good DMing this is the way i lkie to do it.

  • well done. You guys really show what a traditional, typical game is. Breaks back memories.

  • I love how the two guys who never played before go from "this is dumb", to hanging on the DM's every word in minutes, and then talking in character. =P

Makes me want to get a game going again too.

  • Been thinking of trying D&D again for old time sake. They make it sound like fun again... except the one dude needs to lay off the donuts or this game will kill him :)

  • it's all the same actually.. the fun are still there... the rules only change because it simplified and more focused on gaming than rule reading... unlike on the first versions... when someone cast a spell.. the dm needs to search for that rule and time are being wasted looking for it... most of the time, it becomes the reason for others to get tired waiting for the rules on that action to be found... for others the first versions are better because they knew the rules but not for the new ones..

  • Is this 4th edition gameplay, cuz if it is yuck. 3.5 is better

  • 3:00 gie is barely there but there

  • I cant decide 1 of these D&D ideas. Please help.

    1) In a battle with a powerful wizard exeprimenting on time travel the party and wizard are accidentally teleported to the early cretatious period and and have to fight each other and dinosaurs

    2) The party stumbles upon a lost valley where since the dinosaur times magic has prevented extinction. Super intellagent raptor hominiods have colinized the land riding and hunting dinosaurs. Players must help/hurt the different rapor clans.

  • @GonnaBeALongLongTime i rather not call it time travel my friend.. more of teleporting to other place but not in time... i i choose the second option... here's an idea.. your party was on a boat or ship traveling heading what ever direction.. until a thick fog came and swallow your ship or boat.. then after the fog disappear.. you find your self heading on an island which is not on your map or what ever.. classic way to get to an strange island with dinosaurs.. etc... :)

  • This is some top-drawer DMing, but then I would expect nothing less from one of the minds behind the game itself. These guys are awesome new players, as well, and also awesome players in general. Kudos to all present at that table.

  • I wonder if they kept playing this game even after recording this.

  • My group moved into 4th, but then they have ventured back into 3.5. Anyone else's group done that or is it just mine? They complain that it is too much like WOW.

  • @Corailie I think it's more about what you want from it. :) I have a couple of D&D campaigns, as a DM...With a play group we're going to alternate them...The other playgroup simply hates it...I'm studyin' 4th edition right now and even if our game style is totally "narration-centered" (we play with candles, gadgets and ambient music) I think it enhance narration someways...Its rules are combat centered, but they're pretty "simple" compared to the 3.5 issues...

    Anyway, I like both.

  • @Corailie it is it might as well have been a new edition of the wow rpg

  • i agree...videos like these are great ways to see how a good DM runs the game. Ive been running my 4th edition campaign for 6 months now, and this video showed me that im not a crappy DM. lol :)

  • I love that the DM is one of the people who've worked on 4th Edition :D

  • I love this to death

  • Where's the beer? I have not played without beer in years!

  • Awesome, King Ghidorah T-shirt!!

  • Oh, Forgotten Realms. I love Forgotten Realms. Nice.

  • lol at 7:50

  • My husband and I have played D&D for over 20 years each, and honestly weren't thrilled with anything past 2nd edition - the later editions seemed more concerned with min/maxi wargaming than Roleplaying. But after listening to Chris GM for the Penny Arcade crew and now here, I'm actually interested in giving 4th edition a try. (Side note - I did *not* expect him to look like that after listing to the PA podcasts!)

  • His descriptions of things are pretty good. He makes his point and moves on quickly, which is a trait I value during a game.

  • Thank god I know play DnD this is amazing,Chris Perkins hs Inspired me.And besides is soo useful to watch him as a DM.

  • I do play RPG sometimes. Cience magazines even say it helps brain development. Anyway, I play and I do think it´s lame. It´s not something I´d tell to any girl I´ve dated. Some found out and luckly, they just made fun of me. Anyways...

...if there is something that´s even lamer than playing D&D...

...it´s certainly watching a D&D Game by youtube! That´s for sure.

    HAIhAIUHuaiHaAIuhiaha

  • "Some found out and luckly, they just made fun of me."

Rather than what? Beating you? Jesus christ you're pathetic.

  • @SSj5Bob

Rather than dumping me. I didn´t mean they made fun in a mean way. They were pretty much ok with it. I just have many friends (girls) who are not. I don´t know... Things maybe don´t work in the same way were you come from. Lucky you?

It´s damn easy to call people pathetic through the internet. ;-]

  • @DaviBraid The way you phrased your response has caused SSj5Bob's comment. First you say you play RPGs, then explain they are "lame." This is misleading. I personally do not engage in activities I deem "lame." Waste of time, right? You also say, and I quote "Some found out and luckly, they just made fun of me." Which means you were thankful nothing else happened. As for what, you tell us. Would they have beaten you? Burned your D&D books? Performed an Excorcism? Maybe those aren't real friends

  • @BonkaNok What´s up to you guys who don´t get sarcasm that well? About being lame. Yeah, it looks lame even to me, but it´s something I like to do. Have you never done something you like, but embarasses you? Lots of people have.

  • @BonkaNok "...they just made fun of me." I refer to girls I´ve dated, but were kinda cool with RPG. Different of my friends´ girlfriends who had dumped them or made them stop playing. My ex-girlfriend, luckly, was just saying things like: "Oh, my god, I´m dating a nerd" joking.

  • @DaviBraid Or laughing like you have brain damage :D

  • @ZivilynTheWyrd Or that.

  • @DaviBraid I do get sarcasm 99% of the time when it is spoken word. Type can be somewhat unclear in its context. As for liking something that embarrasses me. No, no I do not. This is contradictory. As is liking something I deem to be lame. These words need to be examined more carefully. Simply put. You wouldn't do it if it was embarrassing, and you wouldn't like it if it were lame. Vocabulary for today's class: embarrass, lame, contradictory

Have your definitions written down for tomorrow.

  • does the DM make it up? or is he gettings notes from one of the manuals?

  • it's a Forgotten Realms Campaign

  • well depends. when i DM i just have a few notes about the general area the plot should be going. like that screen is usually just stats for weapons, monsters, etc.

  • The DM is awsome!

  • this is absolutely amazing, thank you for upping this and thank you wotc for making this happen.

  • Hmm....he's ok as a DM - nothing spectacular there.

If he's 'great' to you, I'd hate to see who's been running your games :)

  • I doo agree, Bro.

  • I do agree, bro, but you see... The group is not the kind that would help either, right?

  • Yes Chris is a great DM. Makes me look bad. Very fun group to watch. I find it amazing how Many things all groups have in common. Keep it up guys.

  • Do I detect a hint of 3.x habits creeping through?

  • 3.x habits? please explain. cheers

  • The DM tries to think of an appropriate skill to use to know of spiders, and defaults to Knowledge skills, which were in 3.x, and not in 4e.

  • ok, cheers bro

  • The DM is great

  • I WANT TO PLAY NOW!!!!!!!!!!!

  • ive never played d&d and this is entertaining to me

  • 4.0??

  • indeed

  • Really nicely shot! captures the fun of D&D and I love how everyone who has not played it before gets sucked in.

  • This is great, I'm going to take some pointers from this next time I GM.

  • Quality DMing, I wish I was that good.

  • I think this is a great example of quality dm'ing for new players! (Not worrying about too many rules, addressing things as they come up, slowly inviting character interaction, etc.) Cool!

  • @weasleydavid And how slick was the DM? The moment they started sounding like they were honestly about to bail on the whole scene due to RISK (still blows my mind), what did the DM do?

"Oh hey, you know there's...tons of treasure down there too."

    Without missing a BEAT!

God that mans so in tune with what's going on he must sweat harmony.

  • This was awesome! I'd like to see more videos of other people playing D&D. They don't always have to be famous or anything. It'd help talk some of my friends into playing if they knew a little more about what playing the game is like. This is a great way to do that!

  • @circusmunky finding people to play dnd is simple, if you are in high school there is almost garunteed to be a good 2 or 3 others at least that will play with you. if you can't find anybody just find a gaming/comic shop in your area that holds tournaments and go talk to people there to see if you can join a game.

  • @circusmunky Yeah like Robin Williams or Vin Diesel.

  • awesome DM!

  • That is an awesome map!
