I can listen to this tune over and over again.........I can almost imagine myself on the Kings funeral ship being delivered to the king........all of us vikings rowing hard.
Everyone on shore tense as we approach dock at full speed............then suddenly oars down and the ship comes to an immediate halt.Well that's the way I remember it!
charles' son bruce, was my first boyfriend 44 years ago. charlie was a really nice guy. i just remember he had tons of music equipment all over his living room. good memories=)
You are right, in that this 45 has Part 2 on the flip side. In case you are interested the Record No. is PX730, first published on the "COLPIX" Record label in 1964. Accorording to the sleeve it was a Division of Columbia Pictures. I no longer have record player so can`t tell you anything about "Part 2" or upload to "YOU TUBE". Interesting to read your comments
I still prefer part II, the french hornes capture the feel of being at sea, majestic. Imagine the original star trek theme song with a piano instead of the brass intro.
The song is good on it's own, without associating it with a movie.I've never seen the movie but have always loved the song..The version of any song you initially hear is the one you end up liking the best. So there is no right or wrong answer.
I prefer part 1. The piano, which is gone in part 2,adds a dimension and melds with the strings beautifully. But both versions are good. You can't ruin a beautiful song.
Thanks for your post. I've been telling people about this song for many years (especially about Parts 1 & 2). I thought I must be slipping, but you've restorted my sanity! Love this song.; would love to hear Part 2 again as well someday. 10+ stars!
The film is featured on quite a regular basis by the Tv companies, BBC2 screened it on Monday 24th August p.m. This was the full length original, as shown in the Cinemas and contained scenes such as the ride on the "Mare of Steel". For reasons better known to other Tv broadcasters, their films are usually "cropped", presumably to fit their time slots. The "Mare" is usually a casualty of such cropping.
No doubt the "BEEB" will repeat it again. Hope you enjoy it?
Uh, actually there was a 45 recording as well. On one side the title read: Part 1, and on the flip side it read Part 2. I think the difference was a slight more orchestrated sound on one, and more piano on the other.
Sorry, I just notice you are playing a 45 record! DUH! I couldn't see the video clearly; looked like a 33 1/3 record. Does your record read Part 1 and Part 2? Now that I've "expanded" the comments section, I see that videoarchiveman helped clarified my very dusty memory. Just ignore my rants.
Adding a little information on this relatively unknown artist (although he should be more well-known). Albertine worked with Sammy Kaye's orchestra in the late '40s and as late as the early '60s; he arranged music for the Les Elgart band in the early '50s; he could play a number of instruments, including piano, oboe, tenor sax and clarinet; he conducted music for TV series such as "Hazel" and "Days of Our Lives"; and composed music for "Fantasy Island" and "The Incredible Hulk." Quite a talent!
Though I feel it should have, this song never reached the Billboard Hot 100. But, as another comment indicates, it was No. 1 in Fresno. It was also a pretty big hit on KOMA in Oklahoma City and KLIF in Dallas in the autumn of 1964.
I must dig out the original LP I have of the music from this film. The theme was composed by Dusan Radic. I like this arrangement but if you like this the original score is even better.

I have this very record.
It was the only recording of the main theme available at the time the film was released.
Great Viking saga, well worth watching. Krock, the Thane puts in a particually convincing performance.

thanks. I still have to see the movie.

I have never seen the movie. I'll have to watch it. The song is one of my favorite instrumentals of all time.
