The Aussie band MANTA have recorded this theme with didgeridoo, cello and guitar and it sounds awesome. Check it out at their site, mantatrio d o t com
This is a good theme tune, definitely, but I do prefer the new version. Maybe because I'm more used to it, I don't know. This is quite excellent, though, and it's too bad the woman who composed it, Delia Derbyshire never got any recognition.
In the mid 80es I think, there was a docktor, who had a colorful scarf. What was the name of this dr? and which years was he active? I remember because he was the first dr. to apeare on danish television, at least that what i belive.
Omg that brings tears to my eyes! I live all the original doctors! They all brought something unique to the show! Would live to see a special like the "5 doctors"!
2005-2007 series had the best theme for me. They tried a bit too hard to modernise it with the newest one IMO. Still, it's an immortal theme in every form!
@IanMalcolmTv: I just love the irony of you going on about how great David Tennant was while you're listening to a Doctor Who theme that was made almost a decade before he was even born.
What about William Hartnell? This is HIS theme, after all.
I hate it when people remix amazing songs when there's nothing wrong with the original in the first place! Most of the time I find originals are the best :)
best version by far! Still gives the creeps today. Imagine listening to that as a kid in 1963! Never mind hiding behind the sofa, you'd shit yourself!
Soooooo awesome. Fit the mood of the show and the quirkiness of the title character perfectly. I remember watching this as a kid here in the USA and never wanting to miss the opening sequence, for its great "2001" visuals and eerie electronic music. Sweet!
I remember dancing to this tune with my dad whenever the show came on when I was a toddler in the 80's. I think it has a lot to do with the music I love today!
Hear you...my sentiments exactly. Incredible the effect a TV show theme song has on your likeness of certain music. I love anything with a synthesizer to this day. A majority of what I listen too...
I don't know much about much but I read that this wasn't a synth or even a theremin like I thought. Apparnetly he taped tone generators and cobbled it together pretty much note by note. Inspired.
@Doughman888 its the sound of raw voltage being delivered through Glass Valve Oscillators, Filters and Amplifiers. Heaps revolutionary for it's time and it still sounds fair awesome.
Ron wrote a theme tune then they took it to the BBC radiophonic workshop and produced it. The metronome in the background was added and Ron was stunned by what he had made :P he was in disbelief that he made it sound to good ...
Got to be one of the best TV theme tunes on this planet. This particular theme is far superior to any other. Brings back good memories and my time as a kid watching it was with John Pertwee and Tom Baker, who was quite a freaky and scary Dr Who.
I just started watching Doctor Who in the past few months, bow I love it so much!!! It's so cool! The really great part is that me and my Girlfriend got together through DW!!!! LOL!
@PePethegamesmaker Luckily the very newest theme, with Matt Smith acting as the Doctor, is very like the original! You should listen to it it's pretty good.
@VideosByRaymonD Believe it or not I've never watched doctor who until david tennant and I love it. Then they brought in the new guy and if you ask me david is simply a better actor.
@VideosByRaymonD Yes, its changed and Matt Smith is playing hte doctor. Matt is great but David was so much better! Still, Matt has a lovable character! ^_^
I think it's those very low harmonics that gave this version it's otherworld creepiness. Gods, I remember being chilled by the adventures that followed... Daleks... Salamander the Tyrant... the Celestial Toymaster... and those first Cybermen with the lilting, sing-song voices...
David tennant is my hero and thats not a joke. if you are out there please contact me i want to be just like you and act as the doctor when i'm older.
i hjust got into the series, it's pretty funny and awesome !! i love how the robots are designed !! it's on here in the US at 11 pm on pbs. may need to buy it from itunes.
David always wanted to be in Doctor Who as a little kid. he got his dream come true !!
i know dave tennant is a kick ass doctor and it is true he has alway wanted to be the doctor which is great cuz he actually knows the show...thats way he did a fantastic job i just wish he was still the doctor
I think the thing is is that he has so much acting experience, he can look emotions with his eyes, he doesn't play the Doctor, he IS the Doctor...The new one's too young to have real experience.

hey knuckles8886 times change the new generation prefers something different, they want to watch a show that doesnt look like shit compared to something cgi and filtered. Times change so dont be a dick about it.
If the new generation prefers "something different," then why are they constantly copying stuff from the 60s up until even the 90s? Most of the "music," movies and even TV shows are remakes of everything from those decades. Alot of the good stuff came from the 1960s, whether people like that or not (and I wasn't born until the mid-70s, so I'm not that old). Don't like what knuckles8886 had to say? Create something original!
the original Doctor Who series was so much better than the one we're stuck with now. What's even worse, is that none of the kids that watch it reaslise there was a doctor who 40 odd years ago. They've taken the Doctor Who series and turned into farce as far as i'm concerned.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Yeah true that. Don't be so surprised though - nowadays all classic shows are just absolutely butchered into modern tacky and uninventive rubbish. It ruins it!
I agree that nowadays they butcher classics in order to keep the television and music industry moving, but you must realise that there are some kids out there who know about the original Doctor Who. You, sir, made an understatement. There are kids out there who know about the original Doctor Who, but I must agree that few acknowledge him because they were not born in the years the original Doctor aired; give them some slack.
hey thats not true im an american 17 year old and ive known all about the old series of doctor who and all the guys who have played the doctor and ive seen the episodes too
when i say that this theme music (composed in 1963) was the first ever electronic music in the world, you might want to reconsider how crap the music is.
even though Im only 18 I can tell you that the old series is far better than the "Hollyoaks in space" crap that is the new series so I'll forgive you for calling it crap.
put it this way.. I watch CSI. Doctor Who is not my thing.. my brother went on to my windows account without my permission. so in my personal oppinion, people running round wearing rubber alien masks is crap.
soz but in comparison to other things.. doctor who is not gothic horror... i should know i've read "The strange case of Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde" for my GCSE English. and i'm into gothic movies such as "The Crow" and "Underworld Evolutions".. Doctor who is immature crap.
On the contrary. there were several which were cut for repeats because of the violence. The Brain of Morbius was, in essence, a Frankenstein tale, Planet of Evil was, in essence a Jekyll and Hyde story. As that video i suggested you look at says, this new series has become a show for ten year-old children.
And it was put on an 18-month hiatus in the 80s because the level of violence had got too high, Vengeance on Varos in particular.
Vengeance on Varos (1985) features people being burned to death by laser beam, killing people by making them imagine that they are dying of thirst in a desert, people being drowned in acid baths...
But the twist is that all this is being broadcast to the population of a planet on television. The viewers vote, out of the entire population, who they want to kill and how they should be killed.
Doctor Who predicted the phenomenon of reality TV 23 years (from 2008) before reality TV became a hit!!!
Doctor Who is a british sci fi show about a alien who calls himself The Doctor and he has a machine called a TARDIS that can take him anywhere in space and time and he has adventures and battles monsters and villians.
? The most unforgettable tune of the centry?

Yeah true that. Don't be so surprised though - nowadays all classic shows are just absolutely butchered into modern tacky and uninventive rubbish. It ruins it!

i agree

I agree that nowadays they butcher classics in order to keep the television and music industry moving, but you must realise that there are some kids out there who know about the original Doctor Who. You, sir, made an understatement. There are kids out there who know about the original Doctor Who, but I must agree that few acknowledge him because they were not born in the years the original Doctor aired; give them some slack.

personally i hate the theme tune and my brother favourited it without my permission while i was at school and i can't remove this crap.
darkangel6698 3 years ago
when i say that this theme music (composed in 1963) was the first ever electronic music in the world, you might want to reconsider how crap the music is.
even though Im only 18 I can tell you that the old series is far better than the "Hollyoaks in space" crap that is the new series so I'll forgive you for calling it crap.

put it this way.. I watch CSI. Doctor Who is not my thing.. my brother went on to my windows account without my permission. so in my personal oppinion, people running round wearing rubber alien masks is crap.
darkangel6698 3 years ago
a) you have t use your imagination when watching the "rubber alien masks" (whatever they may be)
secondly, as Doctor Who is time travel, it doesn;t always feature monsters.
and i know many people who watch it just for that theme tune.
and I suggest that you watch "doctor who old vs new" to see that the old series was better. Much more death, violence and gothic horror !!!!! :D
AidanLunn 3 years ago
soz but in comparison to other things.. doctor who is not gothic horror... i should know i've read "The strange case of Dr Jekyl and Mr Hyde" for my GCSE English. and i'm into gothic movies such as "The Crow" and "Underworld Evolutions".. Doctor who is immature crap.
darkangel6698 3 years ago
On the contrary. there were several which were cut for repeats because of the violence. The Brain of Morbius was, in essence, a Frankenstein tale, Planet of Evil was, in essence a Jekyll and Hyde story. As that video i suggested you look at says, this new series has become a show for ten year-old children.
And it was put on an 18-month hiatus in the 80s because the level of violence had got too high, Vengeance on Varos in particular.
AidanLunn 3 years ago
Vengeance on Varos (1985) features people being burned to death by laser beam, killing people by making them imagine that they are dying of thirst in a desert, people being drowned in acid baths...
But the twist is that all this is being broadcast to the population of a planet on television. The viewers vote, out of the entire population, who they want to kill and how they should be killed.
Doctor Who predicted the phenomenon of reality TV 23 years (from 2008) before reality TV became a hit!!!
AidanLunn 3 years ago
people dieing in the story line does not nessesarily make it gothic horror. it's purely sci-fi in what ever way you look at it.
darkangel6698 3 years ago
I take it then that you didn't read my other comment. just above the one i posted last.
AidanLunn 3 years ago
i have now.. but even so you still can't beat the classics..

Doctor Who is a british sci fi show about a alien who calls himself The Doctor and he has a machine called a TARDIS that can take him anywhere in space and time and he has adventures and battles monsters and villians.
