  • hello i'm a new subscriber. i was researching the master cleanse and saw you did it. i've done it before and gained all the weight back. did you gain any weight back after and was it hard to stay on a healthy diet? i'm going to go back on it next week it's so hard though when someone like me likes to drink!! oh well! by the way your super !! ;)

  • Why are you Americans always drinking soda ?!

Here in France we only drink water.

    Soda's only occasional.

  • Because it tastes good and can be cheaper than water (if you buy it bottled, which you shouldn't)

  • You might try iced tea with a dash of sugar (or in my case diet sweetener). So much better than pop.

  • i love you <3

  • how much weight have u gained since the master cleanse

  • Damn -- really very sorry that Nick moved out! Hope you both will be ok. You were an inspiration to many. But reality can change for reasons we not always understand. Take care of yourself in the coming days. And know that there are a lot of people who care about both of you and want the best to be yours.

  • What?! Where did that news come from?

I'm horrified . . please tell me it isn't true.

  • Yeah -- It seems to be true. Nick put up a video two days ago saying he was moving out. Only a few people got to see it as he took it down after a few hours. He said he was staying in New York and moving out on Tuesday

  • I just want to know how to have a cute banner, How do you do that??

    ~mai~

  • YouTube Partnership

  • What does that even mean?? :)

  • go to youtube home... scroll down all the way to the bottom... under "programs" it should say "Partnerships"

click on that and it tells you all about it.. basically gives you benefits like the pretty bar... you do, however, have to meet certain requirements.

  • Thanks! :)

    ~mai~

  • Wheat bread and the brown pasta; all the crap that isn't bleached tastes way better than white bread and regular pasta.

  • Davey Wavey is good looking and doors open for him in life.

He downplays it and often emphasis the internal spiritual side of things. I think he is a bit naive about the benefits of being young and good looking. In fairness he is educated and intelligent and a decent human being.

  • one thing i find is that when i go to a town nearby like they have their own lil circle of videos that are popular around them so the videos that get like maybe no more than 10000 views and maybe 200 subcribers mite be cuz its popular around where they live,.. im not sure if im making sense with this but like sum1 at school will make sumthin and it mite get 2000 views but like only people who know about it, i have sum freinds who make like the funniest shit and its only populer around here... <3

  • great video - i really like stumbling upon people with not-so many subscribers & not-so many video views... they're rare to find & to be honest, when i watch some of the partners (some, not all) videos i think "i can't believe this person just made money for this & i HELPED." haha

but i'm really not sure what makes someone popular on youtube. i'd really like to find out, though!

    peace

    jodee

  • take it off chris :P..

I think they gained popularity because they have created something people where searching for. I found ur channel looking for that lemonade cleanse thing (i lasted 3 hours, fyi). i know daveys channel took off when he had a vid about his masturbating neighbour.. crocker made world news... Those guys kinda irritate me because they all became very aware of their popularity and it has inflated their egos.

  • hehe good questions .. i definately do watch davey wavey and i would say have been for about a year. i guess i was there when he was "less" popular, but really he has good messages and ya he is really attractive. i think he knows how to market himself though to get his messages out there. its sort of like a neccesary evil maybe? but at first he did alot of naughty esq videos that got the attention to him hehe.. they were cute though and funny when u watched them.. but ya that helped im sure ! :)

  • The most popular gay YouTubers (Chris Crocker, William Sledd, What The Buck, Davey Wavey) seem to reinforce a stereotypical perception of gayness (i.e. flamboyant, queeny, effete, or all of the above). I don't criticize them for being who they are, but it's telling that the general public mostly likes to watch gay men who they can easily pigeonhole and who aren't going to challenge their preconceptions about sexuality.

  • Great insight there, I totally agree.

  • I love B. Scott! I think he's so popular because he's funny and real. I've seen other You Tubers with similar vlogs but they seem like they're trying to be like him or trying to be purposely ourtrageous for shock value rather than just being themselves. I like someone who comes off as genuine like you Chris. Or sometimes I just like pure comedy. I tend to stay away from the drama though. I got enough of it in my own life, lol.

  • Well certainly cuteness helps but then you occasionally come across someone like FantasticBabblings whose videos are just so cogent and so uniformly excellent that they begin to get a wider audience.

  • hi.i would assume that youtube viewership is, like the general populace, not very bright. ppl often have superficial reasons for watching someone (remember, this is a very visual realm), and dont spend time to process content. for me, your videos are nice because they seem unaffected and honest. ps. i ran into you on the e train at the spring st station. i STILL regard that as a celebrity sighting!

  • I love that Lilly Allen song :0)

    xxxJoolsxxx

  • I love water. If you miss the carbonation try flavored waters. Very good.

  • Also add the to the issue ageism as well. How many older gays - 40s, 50s are popular on this site? Please tell me if you know of any.

Someone recently ask me how they could gain more subscribers and be more popular. How really can't say what the main ingredients are, but looks and being young definitely put you in good stead. Watch this space...

  • I think that is a problem in the "gay community" in general. I'm 36 and most younger gay men consider me to be on my last leg. That actually started even when I was only 25 years old. Funny thing is.. most people now don't even guess me to be in my 30's yet. But when someone finds out my age, I'm automatically plagued or something. It's rather shallow and pathetic.

Don't even get me started on the looks crap. I was born with a cleft lip, so I'm very self conscious...

  • I'm slightly older than you so I guess that I am a fossil waiting to be unearthed. What people tend to forget is that age and looks are only for a fleeting moment. If you look at the popular gays on here and look at the comment section and most of the comments tend to be about complimenting them on how cute they are rather than on the actual content or on the subject under discussion. Unfortunately, we live in a very visual age and sadly most people tend to judge you here on what you look like.

  • Now I definitely would NOT say you are a fossil :) I think aging is a beautiful thing... mostly because of the wisdom that (sometimes) comes with age.

    cheers :)

  • I definitely think that looks play their part. I recall seeing a video which featured a fat transexual making some really good points about depression but only had about 10 views. I was thinking, "how come some people can get thousands upon thousands of subscribers and others get very little?"

This had me thinking about which gays are popular and which ones aren't, and what constitutes gaining popularity. Cont

  • I loved the video you guys did (you were SERVING IT, bitch)! What I loved most is that it was all inclusive to anyone who wanted to join, instead of being a "Cool Kids Invite Only" thing -- which is what I think YouTube is turning into.

Nothing against Davey Wavey or his pecs, I'm sure he's deep too. I just remark that it's a looksist culture we're in, and in this age where anyone with a webcam can claim web-celebrity, talent or no talent, the PRETTY ONES usually get there first.

  • I saw his video inviting, and I really really loved that song so I did was way excited to be apart of it. Plus I was subscribed to him for like a month now, I think he is way creative and I am so glad that this video is getting popular. I understand your frustrations in this video. I think when someone takes there talent they have in real life and makes that shine though a video is what makes people watch others. Davey is hot but also really spiritual as well. Thats why i like him. Mwah chris

  • I don't really have any theory behind it all.

I watch people I find interesting. I follow recommendations made by people I like.

There are definitely some people that I really don't understand why people like them so much, like Fred (OMG irritating!) or Nigahiga (sp?- I don't think he's funny :-/)

There are some people I've subbed to for a long time that I suddenly get sick of (...Buck). I don't think there's any formula to it, though being hot certainly doesn't hurt :D

  • OMG! thanks for the shoutout <3333!

actually, i did all of the collabs just for fun lol, and i dont wanna/ didnt plan to be famous :/! i just make vids for fun lol.

thanks a lot. no, really <3!

    xx

  • I think that it comes down to looks, personality, and content is probably at the very bottom of the heap. At least that is what it seems like in the beginning. It's troublesome to me when I make a video and some random subscriber just tells me that I'm beautiful... Makes me realize why people like Davey Wavey are so popular. Well shit, I better hit the gym... As for your boyfriend, I really think he has more subs because he is a tall blonde swede with an accent. Does content matter??

  • My boyfriend's videos only caught my attention b/c HELLO -- look at him! He's dreamy! :) That's not to say that his actual content isn't interesting and layered but he always says the bulk of his viewers are older gay men in their 50's and young twinkies, so you know... Looks are a huge part of why subscriptions and popularity build.

  • you are so right about davey wavey... his videos aren't even good, but he's pretty... that's why he's popular.

And William Sledd, he's been on major TV shows, and has had a lot more mainstream exposure other than his youtube videos... that is why he's so popular, even though he really doesn't make that many videos.

I like your videos and your point of view... keep making videos. OH and I gave up soda in february, and haven't had it since. try replacing it with juice, water, or chocolate milk

  • Chris Im with you on the "the same people get featured" its just like you said.

Ive been on hear for 1 and a half years and have very little subs but I do love doing the vids.

I sub to people that just interest me, or are funny or are incredibly artistic.

  • I think popularity has a lot to do with portability. Like, as soon as I saw the Big Fat Gay Anti-Hate Collab, I immediately posted it on my gay youth site and Facebook. Because there's no prior knowledge needed. I don't think I ever watched a video of anyone on that collab before. I also *found* that video because someone else posted it on Facebook. I think the same is true of What The Buck and William Sledd, you can watch one, and you're in. Whereas your videos and others, it is sort of like...

  • an ongoing blog/journal (or since it's video, perhaps soap opera?) and even when it's interesting, unless it's on some big current issue, I'd be less likely to post it elsewhere. So, I think videos you can immediately share and people can "get" them are a huge factor.

Similarly, I found you when you and Nick were just getting together, and posted that on my site for the kids

Also, Wheat bread is not whole wheat bread, just a scam to make you think it's healthier. Make sure it says whole wheat.

  • Oh yeah! I subscribed to you thru Queerty, as well!

  • I've subscribed to people that were linked by other You Tubers. Davey Wavey I subscribed to thru Queerty and yeah he's good looking, but if he were all body and no substance I'd get bored pretty quickly. But he has a lot of insight and I mean that literally and is very 'zen' in a way.

  • When I saw Teeny creep into the background my first reaction was "Gee, Chris better call the Terminex sometime soon," and then I remembered..

  • You know chris. I agree with you about how it doesnt seem some people even edit their own stuff anymore. B Scott has become kind of boring. I liked when he swore, and jumped around and talked about getting parking tickets and REAL STUFF. I guess that's what happens when you get "famous"

  • I got thoroughly disgusted with Davey Wavey when he went on about how hot that serial murderer in Massachusetts is. That was my "way too shallow" breaking point. I unsubscribed from him after a couple of weeks of his shallowness.

  • Chris, I subscribe to quite a few channels, but only watch a few on a consistent basis. I always watch your new videos. I find what you have to say interesting and think you are insightful and really try to be as respectful as possible of others views (when they deserve it !). I also enjoy hearing about your life and relationship. You are for sure one of my favorites and I hope you keep posting :)

  • hey! thanks for your video response and comments. im glad you know now that the collab was open to everyone :)

i also wonder what makes some videos more popular than others. take the big fat gay collab for example - i would have been thrilled if the collab had 1000 views, 15 comments, and 3 new subscribers. i never expected it to be as big as it is, especially so fast. you just never know how popular (or not) a video will be. *shrug*

LEMON WATER all the way <3

  • Stevie - the video was FABULOUS, so cleverly edited! I love the bouncy, smirky energy you kept in it and the great mix of ppl in the group just made it that more interesting to watch. I subscribed to a lot of them now. Thank you!

  • I often ask myself the same thing being that I have 5 channels on Youtube and one has 3 subscribers and the other over 1500

    GenderFun

    Drawlove

    Amnesia

    theDralo

    itsalo

and if you look at which of my videos get the most hits, they are the ones where I'm in drag and NOT talking. says a lot about my audience. they treat me like a piece of meat...and a part of me likes it

thanks for the mention in the sidebar.

    hugs

  • Mmm, wheat bread! I actually never liked white bread? It tastes weird to me for some reason.

I'm trying the same thing with soda, too -- two weeks running so far. We'll see how long it lasts.

  • You are popular! Youtube has become two tier levels: those that are in it for the business and those that are "real" connections. Seems the more outlandish you are, the more popular. I never heard of Sled(sp?) till someone on the view mentioned him and he got tv promos. I like people who are real and honest. I am becoming very disenchanted with those who are here for self promotion which is their right to create opportunities but I am just not that into them. :)

  • Personalities like William Sledd and Lisa Nova and Ysabella Brave and WhattheBuck and HappySlip are amazing to me, they've CHANGED the rules of fame and have proven you can make yourself a star. I don't connect with that kind of channel tho, so like you, I'm "just not that into them" either.

And I'm not popular, I've just got my core audience locked in -- which I'm still astounded by! What are all you strangers doing here??

  • i subscribe to anyone that interest me. and that could be anyone.

and thanks for mentioning my channel :)

  • I'm into the indie labels, so I tend to like the less commercial, lesser viewed channels. Becuase of this I'm always finding new channels, people that are new to the voggosphere, and I see some get lots of subscriber, and others not. I've come to this conclusion, there are two ways you can get lots of subs: 1) have a gimmick 2) be very attractive. Sex sells on youtube, and if you're good looking you can be an ass and have boring videos and sill be popular.

  • I subscribe to people that have substance in their videos... sure I have some "fluff" subscriptions, but doesn't everyone. I subscribed to you because you have substance in your videos.

I only just hit 100+ subs... It's hard figuring out what the heck to do to get people to be interested.

  • It is that ellusive "IT" factor...if you could put your finger on it you would be a marketing genius. Timing, talent, and luck.

Some might put out the whole 'Law of attraction' things...ala the Secret...I dunno but it's interesting.

I know I have subscribed to you and continue because I find your journey facinating. Much love. XOXO

  • I agree with Shayachern. I'm enoying your journey.

  • You have to make whoever is watching want more of you. Create suspense int he last 20 seconds of your video?

  • I agree with yescandles, it's hard to find interesting vloggs. Once people find them, they stick with them and recommend them to friends, the views and subscriptions grow from there. I don't actively search for more vloggs, but if a cute face (Nickas/You) or a naked chest/masturbating neighbour (Davey Wavey) pop up I watch and subscribe just in case more interesting vloggs follow. Unsubscribing is rare, although Davey has tested me: I think B. Scott is all the religion I need. Just sayin'.

  • ive also notice that some can have music some cant hmmm?<

  • ive seen a big time reduction in vloggs now there are no new people out there.

  • Okay, now I remember.

wickydkewl, moved to Canada for school. Don't know if he's still there.

His initial fame began when he had a masturbating neighbor.

Chris, go spy on a neighbor? Are they masturbating? You'll get ten billion more subscribers!

  • wickedly cool?

Post everyone's Youtube URL that you mention. Even the ones you hate!

  • Can you drink Diet? If I feel the need, I drink Diet, although I know there's a lot of people who can't stand it. Coke Zero, tastes EXACTLY like regular Coke, but it has nothing in it. Try it.

    I drink Diet Snapple too.

You look a lot thinner suddenly. Sugar will run you down.

What makes you popular? I know. Don't you?

  • Part of popularity methinks has to do with when you started... I think it would be much harder to get noticed now.

I think it also has to do with style.. You share snip-its from your life which may not be the most popular style...but you are an amazing personality.

To get an idea of what I am saying...check out kevjumba who has over a million views for each video and almost 470,000 subscribers. OK runnin outta room. Bye, Bruce

  • Popularity is the same on youtube as it is in real life.

People who are cute are going to get more views

People who are interesting are going to get more views.

People who do topics that interest other poeple are going to get more vies.

I watch Davey Wavey for the pecs, his yoga and religious crap is not my interest.

  • This is so true hehe. I unfortunately don't watch Davey Wavey's videos all, but i think if you're good looking like that and gay. People will definitely stare! and sorry i didnt add you little big chris on my other account, my boyfriend deleted it! haha

  • b scott is extremely entertaining and very positive and outspoken. and theres no bullshit in what he says. after i watch his videos i feel all warm and fuzzy lol, thats why hes so successful.

  • cont.

It takes awhile to actually "find" people. I just now located this channel and I am subbed to MANY and watch MANY! I spend WAY too much time on YT but most everyone I am subbed to is really interesting to me. (and I am missing hundreds that are awesome I am sure) I think that people make a connection and feel like they "belong" to some people's channels. There are many "groups" on YT. I am quick to sub if I see something I like, and slow to unsub. Why not? I have unsubbed to very few.

  • Its the caffiene AND fizz that is hard to give up.

On Davey..absolutely not. The majority of his subs are gay and they want him...the comments suggest. Those that do not buy into his schpeel are not watching his videos anymore. William Sledd brought me to You Tube. He was in on the ground floor and is SO real and charming. Kentucky style...we WANT him to make it! I have to disagree with you about B. Scott. He is one of a kind. When he takes it to church and opens his heart...well, he wins mine

  • I agree 100% about William Sledd, and wanting to see him succeed. But I can't connect to it anymore... it's so polished and corporate, doesn't even seem like he edits or directs them himself anymore. And to be honest, I get that from BScott sometimes too. His Realness is what I connect to, it's what always holds my attention. Thanks for your comment!

  • To actually answer your question - Becky & I got silly - I really don't know what makes someone more popular. I watch makeup gurus & am often surprised by who has more viewers since some are far more talented but don't get as much play. It could be your theory but there's always that "star" factor where the camera just loves certain people. Doesn't necessarily mean looks wise, it just means they naturally draw people in. I know Buck changed his format to talk about tweens 2 get more subs though

  • Chris, to answer your vid question. Honestly, most people that I subscribe to have been referred to me by friends, or by watching videos like this where my favorites shout other people out. Forgive me for the rage blackout that just took place with Joliz, she's always chapping my hide.

  • I love a late night Chris episode.

  • stalker.
