As a young adult who can also call that little town of New Concord home, growing up with constant exposure to the John Glenn story really makes someone believe that they can do whatever they want and go anywhere in life. He's the epitome of a small town hero.
The town has changed with the times (for example, New Concord High is now New Concord Elementary, and I attended that "new" high school that is now 50 years old), but I think the spirit has remained, 50 years after that flight.
I grew up in Ohio during the 1960's. The space program intrigued me because of John Glenn. This is the first time I've seen this film. My heart feels pride for our nations past accomplishments. My Great Uncle was a Major-General for the Air Force. In Dallas/Fort Worth,Texas a highway was named in his honor. When I found a photo of President Kennedy and Jackie, going down the steps from there Presidental plane my Great Uncle is right behind
I have had the pleasure of talking to Scott over the phone. And I grew up 1 mile from John. On Halloween my father would take me to various interesting neighbors homes. In 1997 I talked to John Glenn and his wife Annie. John told how he wanted to back into space. And the next year he was in orbit in late Oct-Nov on the Shuttle. On Halloween '98 Annie answered the door and we both look up and smiled. Good times... Real American Hero's period.
I saw the capsule at the Smithsonian, christ it was small not much bigger than the GI JOE version !
