Brother Theodore, Chris Elliott, Andy Kaufman: they gave us truly great television when they appeared on the old Late Night. And since they were truly inventive and challenging artists, they unfortunately but inevitably never achieved the wild popularity that utterly insipid mainstream crap like Friends and Seinfeld did.
Im still looking for my favorite Brother theodore Moment where he sais"I know why you have me on your show david,............ for FREEEEEEEEAAAAAK APPEALLLL!!!!!!!"
When Jay Leno succeeded Johnny Carson on "The Tongiht Show," David Letterman's own show basically "jumped the shark." Letterman, understably, had to compete with Leno's mainsteam approach, and so Letterman's show got less quirky, less funky, and less funny, like Leno's. Its really a shame.
Agree completely. Letterman's NBC show was irreverent, pioneering and about as delightfully off-kilter as any talk show has ever been. It ended there.
He was my favorite back in the day. I remember watching the 13 inch black and white Zenuth television in my dorm room at IU, and we would laugh. My aunt would always buy me Letterman stuff for my birthday or Xmas. When he sold out, I stopped watching and I cant recall the last time I watched... probably when I visit my parents. As far as Leno, I fail to comprehend why people watch his show. He is awkward at best.
Did you guys know that Brother Theodore was the voice for "Gollum" in the Rakin/Bass cartoons of The Hobbit? MAN! i had all his appearances on Letterman, but sadly lost them in storage rental unit :( -MAVIII
Yessss! More Bro Theodore. I've been waiting forever! "To be brother theodore is no bed of roses...I am the bride at every funeral...I am the corpse at every wedding...Every time I look into the mirror, I burst into tears."
I wish I had more BT on LNw/DL. I might, I'll have to take a look-see. If VHS tapes weren't $15 a pop in 1984 I probably would have kept all of Letterman's shows. One of my favorite BT quotes (which I still use to this very day) is, "I'm sweating like a chunk of rancid pork." He would be in the middle of a lengthy tirade and Dave would make a quip like, "Well, at least you have a haircut figured out," and BT would continue with , "...if you'd let me get a word in edgewise, David..."
Right on, travis. Those quips were all from an episode that featured Brother Theodore- reason enough to archive- as well as recently crowned Miss America, Kelly Cash ("She makes Bela Abzug look like an airline hostess.") and Billy Joel sitting in with the band. Inmy mind- the best Letterman show ever. And just for posterity, Kelly Cash was amazing.
HE COULD HAVE BEEN SEINFELD'S SOUP NAZI!!!

I would imagine his comedy is not so subtly based on mocking hitler's oratory, considering his life experiences.
