The environmental movement are hypocrits. They want lower carbon emissions, but they protest whenever anyone tries to build dams or nuclear power plants - major sources of energy that don't emit CO2. They are akin to a religious cult, aimed at preventing devolpment and lowering living standards. They are bankrolled by the super-rich elite, and not the downtrodden masses.
Mate your acusations are totally unfair. Whilst some environmentalists may be ignorant and indulgent in their moral superiority, you're missing the point. A lot of 'us' understand how complex these issues are, and how there are many stakeholders values which are necessary to understand if these issues are to be resolved.
Your accusations are entirely false. I am a uni student... super rich? haha i wish. Most aren't hypocrits, if you do some proper, unbaised research (journal articles, forgoe the courier mail please :)) there are many strong arguments against nuclear and dams, i.e. species impacts and limited lifetimes of dams (sedimentation etc). When technology such as solar, wind, geothermal and wave are available, one has to question why costly alternatives such as nuclear and dams are considered.
WOW, if only this kind of protesting can happen in the SEQ area of Traveston near Gympie where the state government is going to build a dam that will be so shallow it will never be full. The Australian Lung Fish & the Mary River Turtle will be totally wiped outof existance.
One only hopes that the people of Australia will rally and fight with the same passion against the proposed pulp mill in the tamar valley, launceston, tasmania.
for all of you saying great to save, the only way to see it is by helicopter or 1 week forced march. Does this make it like parks and gardens, happy to know they exist but never visit?
I was very young and growing up in Tasmania when this happened. I remember how it split the community and I'm proud to say that my parents were totally against it. Now that I'm older I can fully appreciate what the protests achieved and I thank everyone who fought against it. This is a youtube gem!
Those protesters were extremely brave. In hindsight very few people regret saving the Franklin and yet old growth logging continues at an alarming rate. The fight for the protection of our environment will long continue.
This was a great moment in people power! The fact we can enjoy the benefits of this beautiful area should strengthen us to stand up for the rights of what has no voice but immeasurable value to the planet - the wilderness!
This was one of Australia's finest moments. So proud of those guys.

this is the sort of passion that convinces myself to wake up in the morning with a huge smile on my face.
it restores my hope in the world and a hope for a better future.
it's so possible, we've just got to be willing to fight for what is right
and i know each and every person has it in their hearts to do so.
