Chronic Town is awesome. Why is it that the first shitty, self-produced album always the best?
REM had some great tracks in their later years, but nothing compares to the basic simplicity of songs like "gardening at night", "1,000,000", and "carnival of sorts".
Politics got too much in the way. They were always political, but they started bashing out too much in the later years. I'll always love REM. They're one of the greatest bands ever, but I think politics always kills a band when the band tries to push their views on their fans.
@ialsoRAPEemos, they're both excellent! I got turned on to REM back in '84 (Reckoning) and immediately bought everything they had out (which was Chronic Town and Murmur at the time. . .why, I remember I wore an onion on my belt as it was in fashion in those days. . .)
@SgtCrom at one time, it was fashionable to wear an onion on your belt? i must have slept through that or something. was that a local thing? south georgia, maybe?
I used to own this on vinyl. It's the only thing I like of r.e.m.

I've always liked Chronic Town the best. The energy and mystery of that EP is sublime.

Imagery so thick you can feel the texture of every word... tempered by this great music - there will never be another (early) REM

REM was so great back in the day, but what the hell happened to this band in the 90s?
