What they would do, is build a dam on a small creek. When the water got high enough to flood a small gulch in the mountainside, they would bust the dam open, and as the water rushed away, it would carry all of the logs with it- down to a larger stream, and so on.
They could turn even a small spring into a strong enough surge by daming it up.
