To say that Dan Wheldon's accident was avoidable and this should have never happened is ridiculous. The speeds that they were running were much slower than when the Cart PPG ran here in the 90's Ayrie qualified at 236 mph. These 2 idiots may voice their opinions but they have no clue, It's racing and if the element of death was not there then where the challenge. They all know that the next race could be their last. God Bless Dan's family and pray for them.

Speaking of wearing your seat belt, and wearing a helmet, has anyone ever worn a helmet while driving on normal city streets? I did yesterday, felt very weird. I also put the wipers on fast for good measure, because you always feel like you're going faster with them on. People looked at me funny because it wasn't even raining. But, I was persistent and arrived at my destination without removing my helmet. Needless to say, I was coppin some mad stayles.
It was a nice gesture of FLD to that, I've only seen FLD do something nice like this, the other car shows I subscribe to has not said anything about this horrible accident.

I love to see a show that understands how to handle the passing of two greats. This episode was a perfect sending off of two guys who shouldn't have passed on yet. Thanks Derek and all the FLD guys for taking these events seriously instead of undermining them in a quick mention. Hats off to you guys
@samanbandana because many people had warned Indy about the dangers of that track. Open wheeled cars should not be racing on a 1.5 mile oval track, open wheeled cars shouldn't be in ANY oval track! Too many cars+too fast+oval track= wheel lock up = deadly accident. It was preventable, that's why. But in this case as in many, money was worth more than lives.
Indy car is a American event so like all American cars it lacks the safety on lets say a F1 or a Le mans car.. i know American fan boys think different but Indy cars are not made by car companies that spend billion dollars on safety that's why there are 3x more cars on Indy races.. also the competition safety rules are less strict so that teams with less money can compete... so this + oval tracks with huge speeds = danger. nice scripts Derek keep up the good job

Is it me or has Indy Car been plagued with more accidents this year than last. It is a shame someone died, clearly Indy needs to get their _____ together.
IMO Indy car racing is simply just not as safe as Formula 1, they said it's been 5 years since the last death in Indy, I'm sure F1 hasn't had one for a LOT longer. I think Indy has to take a serious look at it's methods and practices, review it's entire safety strategy, redesign the cars even like F1. And why do racing drivers die in aircraft crashes? Thinking of McRae for one.
@marksapollo Also, look at the speed. 220mph average vs 200max. And the distance between the cars, F1 are usually doing time trials compared to the distance here. Its not that F1 hasn't had a death because its safer, but the chances of it happening are just so much greater in Indy

@sentrakidsr20 The track was renovated around 10 years ago to have higher banking. after it was renovated they were saying that open wheel cars shouldn't race on it because it was too fast. They didn't race on it for a while but they just started up again a few years ago I believe. The field was too crowded and the track was way faster than it ever should have been. A lot of drivers are also saying people were driving crazy and people need to start taking better care of each other.
There is no need for knee jerk reactions like the canopy concept.
This is a hard time for any motorsport fan... More sad to me that the new indycar chassis that Daniel Wheldon helped develop is designed to limit these types of accidents that cost him his life.. There is always a danger with racing of any type.. always will be.. all anyone can do is try to limit these types of accidents and learn . RIP Dan.

I have to disagree with you on the new line of BMW's. They dont look sexy at all... they look boring. They remind me of an office desk at some law firm. But the engine advancements they are making are superb, i just hope they put another V8 into the M3, so they can wipe LMS clean like they did back in 2001 ;)
F1 is too dangerous of a form of racing, they need to do something to protect the drivers to continue the series. This is 2011, death shouldn't be a factor in racing. It's practically impossible to die in a NASCAR car these days. F1 needs a canopy and cover the wheels, possibly even restrict the speed
@Coy1750 Derek D was talking about the Indy Car series and not Formula 1. Besides Formula 1 cars are safer than Indy cars because the F1 teams are free to design their own cars whilst staying within the regulations, whereas all Indy cars are basically the same body & engine. Also, there is no way to take the potential of death completely out of the equation when it comes to racing.

Indycar and oval racing is currently the most dangerous auto-racing form. Schu refused to race there. We need to blame the driver a bit, sadly.

Thank you for your words and insight, as much as it hurts and as great as the cost of the accident was we have to find meaning and purpose in Dan Wheldons death, otherwise more tragedy is surely to follow and you highlighted that point without beating everybody over the head about it.
Above all if your going to do something that would put your life at risk, have a safety net in place so to speak. These men and women that get behind the wheel and drive like that are professionals and know exactly what they are getting into. The Ferrari driver that got out of the car may have made a call that saved his life. When they crash its something to see as long as they walk away. Also to the people that street race take notes, don't be stupid stupid.

What's up with BMW releasing their cars in different styling lines?
Loved the idea of it on the 1 series, it went with the cars character.
The 3 series however is more of a 'affordable' premium car with both the ability of being driven in a sporty way and chewing up some highway (and city) miles.
The 4 styling lines seen like they want to split up that character...

You guys are all class acts. Because behind all the jokes, gags, gimmicks, test drives, (oh yeah) and actual car news, you guys really do care. Not doing CotW was a little disappointing but for a very good reason.
It's sad that most autosport events are watched because of the wrecks. I, myself, am guilty of this at some level. However, you are right. Wheldon shouldn't have died and as Parente said, it shouldn't be in vain. Unfortunately, Huseman was a victim of wrong place, wrong time. Prayers.

I'm not sure I completely followed what Leo was getting at ? What happened that "didn't need to happen" ? I understand Dan lost his life but what was Leo implying caused the crash besides driver error ? Please don't troll this post, I just need a simple answer please...I don't follow Indycar too much

@sentrakidsr20 The track was renovated around 10 years ago to have higher banking. after it was renovated they were saying that open wheel cars shouldn't race on it because it was too fast. They didn't race on it for a while but they just started up again a few years ago I believe. The field was too crowded and the track was way faster than it ever should have been. A lot of drivers are also saying people were driving crazy and people need to start taking better care of each other.

There is no need for knee jerk reactions like the canopy concept.
This is a hard time for any motorsport fan... More sad to me that the new indycar chassis that Daniel Wheldon helped develop is designed to limit these types of accidents that cost him his life.. There is always a danger with racing of any type.. always will be.. all anyone can do is try to limit these types of accidents and learn . RIP Dan.

I have to disagree with you on the new line of BMW's. They dont look sexy at all... they look boring. They remind me of an office desk at some law firm. But the engine advancements they are making are superb, i just hope they put another V8 into the M3, so they can wipe LMS clean like they did back in 2001 ;)

F1 is too dangerous of a form of racing, they need to do something to protect the drivers to continue the series. This is 2011, death shouldn't be a factor in racing. It's practically impossible to die in a NASCAR car these days. F1 needs a canopy and cover the wheels, possibly even restrict the speed

@Coy1750 Derek D was talking about the Indy Car series and not Formula 1. Besides Formula 1 cars are safer than Indy cars because the F1 teams are free to design their own cars whilst staying within the regulations, whereas all Indy cars are basically the same body & engine. Also, there is no way to take the potential of death completely out of the equation when it comes to racing.

Unfortunately some forms are far more dangerous than others. That's like saying,"movement is dangerous, because you can slip and fall while walking, you can tumble and roll while running, you can pancake yourself while driving, and you can incinerate yourself upon atmospheric reentry".
Indycar and oval racing is currently the most dangerous auto-racing form. Schu refused to race there. We need to blame the driver a bit, sadly.

seriously, i thought they didn't know what they're doing when bangle was chief, he's gone for years and they continue to do the same shape as he's still there.
i'm saying it for the last 4-5 years, bmws and volkswagens look like kias from a few years ago. plus, the bmw does what audi did with it's whole range, copy the same car look throughout the whole range. it's pathetic, it's luxury for idiots. dered d, you have no style or class, so the car fits you perfectly, just like the passat

Above all if your going to do something that would put your life at risk, have a safety net in place so to speak. These men and women that get behind the wheel and drive like that are professionals and know exactly what they are getting into. The Ferrari driver that got out of the car may have made a call that saved his life. When they crash its something to see as long as they walk away. Also to the people that street race take notes, don't be stupid stupid.

What's up with BMW releasing their cars in different styling lines?
Loved the idea of it on the 1 series, it went with the cars character.
The 3 series however is more of a 'affordable' premium car with both the ability of being driven in a sporty way and chewing up some highway (and city) miles.
The 4 styling lines seen like they want to split up that character...
I do like the overall look of that car though!
