@robvelor FreeBSD is one of the descendants of the original Unix, while Linux was written from scratch. Even FreeBSD has no right to use the Unix trademark, it WAS Unix, which Linux never was and never will.
@Azarien That is why I said Unix like, not Unix. BSD and UNIX shared the initial code base, but BSD was an effort to port unix to a PC, but it is not unix.
@bulaionionion if you have compiz installed on bsd [if you have bsd, i think by reading your answer] there is no difference in appereance between linux user nad bsd user... linux and bsd should be friends and fuck out windows and Mac OS X... amd i right guys? ;)
@67576856666478964567 Why don't you educate yourself before opening your mouth. Mac OS X is not the only certified UNIX OS. I encourage you to take a quick glance at the UNIX article on Wikipedia, it has lot's of pictures as well if reading really isn't your thing.
How about you go fuck yourself. People like you, who cannot function in the real, non-virtual world without having their heads kicked in, should be medicated. Trust me, you wouldn't dare be such a big mouthed, ignorant little prick face to face with someone over something so trivial and pathetic as this. That is, not unless you want your head to become a soccer ball.
Yeah, except that Mac OS X is based on NeXT, which was 4.4BSD grafted on the Mach microkernel as a service. It's no more Unix than BSD is. The Open Group's certification of OS X only means that it complies with certain standards (and Apple shelled out a fair bit of cash)
Really? Can it play _any_ modern games? Nope. Hardly for power users. There isn't one thing that a BSD distro can do that my Linux or Windows machine cant do just as good.
If you mean to talk about servers, well, BSD is better than Linux, but for end-user desktop use, BSD distros SUCK.
uhh wait... so he's just opening a text editor and zooming in and out then flipping through open windows... pfff, power users indeed. freebsd sucks, it doesn't support half the hardware out there and on top of that has almost no visual gui.
I have Ubuntu up and running, so I have experienced Linux... not as awesome as I thought it would be, but Compiz Fusion still looks pretty cool. I still use Windows more though at the moment.
So what is the real difference between the BSDs and Linux distros? I have to admit I am a little dissapointed with the Linux distros. Like Thera.Caffe. I too am a pampered Windows user but to be honest DOS rocks but I like the Linux termnial better. Not to mention I still use Telnet for IRC. Lame I know... So what is the REAL difference between Linux and Unix MODERN distros? Any assistance is greatly appriciated. Thanks!
Dude, kick ass monitor setup! I was thinking of getting FreeBSD as an alternative to Linux, but from what I've heard I'd have to do even more terminal stuff! Ah well, I'm a pampered Windows user so FreeBSD and Linux are hard for me, even though I like them both.
That is partly true as I mostly compile from source, though pkg_add is also called upon make install. Also, why use a precompiled package? Sometimes, you end up with truckloads of problems using readily compiled stuff, especially on a heavily modded system.
Also, if you just like ready stuff, just install linux, fbsd is not for you. ;)
@bulaionionion
That's really too general.

Linux = Unix-like
Freebsd = Unix
Therefore Linux wants to like FreeBSD. That should say it all really :)

Actually, BSD is UNIX-like, while Mac is actually the only certification UNIX based OS, I believe.

Obviously, he compiled everything, as FreeBSD has no ready compiled packages.
