  • ohmygod! thank you! i knew you had a video on this!! i saw it months ago and i recently cut my hair really short and my curls always come out ugly, so i been looking for ways to use the rollers so they wont! thank you! :]]

  • Thank you for posting this video! I've been setting (trying anyways) my hair with sponge curlers and the ending results is little orphan Annie awful!!! You're the best :)

  • I was just wondering what your thoughts were on velcro rollers/how to use them. Thanks so much, you truly are an inspiration!

  • @rathami ugh...hate those things. I had to cut my hair one time because one got tangled in it. :-/ That said, Lauren Rennells uses them a lot and seems to like them. I dunno...maybe it's just my hair. :)

  • Thank u so much!!!!!! :)

  • Hi Lisa. With the hot rollers the first one u used does your hair need to be dry or damp same with the foam rollers?? I'm really new to this coz my hair can never hold a curl. And do u need to sleep with them over night or is there a way to have them ready same

    Day???

  • @kfrivera1985 Dry...with heated tools, it's best to have completely dry hair and just to spray it with a heat protectant before rolling. The wet sets don't have to be slept in overnight...You can roll them in the morning and let them set over the course of the day or you can sit under a heated dryer. A hand held dryer would be too diffficult and too harsh.

  • Do you have experience with brush rollers and their result and authenticness? What type of curl does it make?

  • @avanhalem i have never used them really...:-/

  • I love all your hair style videos but as my hair is so think and long I never know which type of rollers I should use before hand. Would a certain type work better?

Thank you for doing these videos though! You have given me the confidence to try all the different styles and help me bring out my love of anything vintage!

  • I will look

Mine come out too open. I love how your rolls are so closed and tight.

I love your hair vids by the way

    You have hair talent!! :)

  • Hello!

Just a quick question, how long do the perming rod curls usually last for thin medium length hair? Do they last as long as sponge roller curls do?

    Best wishes

  • @cmw777777 yes indeed!

  • Hey i was just wondering if you have any videos of how to roll a victory roll from the top.? i never know how to start the roll from the tip of the hair. I alwasy have alot of trouble with it.

  • @CherryBombsss I actually show the process quite often...most recently in my 'Snoods on the Town' video.

  • do you ever use 'magnetic roller' or something similar? how well do they keep curl?

  • @sumchic213 I have never tried those.

  • @LisaFreemontStreet

Well, I've been wanting to curl my hair but I don't have the money to buy all different types of rollers. If there was one type of roller to get, what should it be?

  • @sumchic213 Foam rollers are very inexpensive and very effective. :)

  • @LisaFreemontStreet

    thanks i will try those.

  • okay in the video u mention how to tame your layers with a technique can you do a video showing how to do that

  • @maylene2022 Watch my video called 'Styling the Middy'. My hair is much shorter and very layered...you can see how I roll it.

  • with hot rollers, is it ok to roll them a little damp? the instructions say not to, but ive seen some other tutorials that do it... i just got a set of hot rollers that Ive been playing with :) thanks

  • @OldHollywoodJunkie7 If you leave the rollers long enough, it should dry the hair but it really depends on your hair thickness...

  • I love your videos! what colour lipstick are you wearing? xx

  • @danielle1981buster This is a Kat Von D shade of orange...I love it. I can't remember right off what it is called but I feature it in a video called 'This is not a Haul Video' that I did a few weeks ago. Thanks!

  • @tymma1 yes I use those sometimes. They don't give me as symmetrical a curl however...

  • is it worth investing in a hood drier?

  • @conconmagraw...not really, unless you do hair for clients. :) You can just set your hair at night or in the morning and allow it to dry to get the same results.

  • @LisaFreemontStreet thanks, i tried that but they fell out (on one side only i might add lol not a good look) hair is possibly too long. salon is way overdue!!!

  • Oh my! Fantastic video... I knew there was something I was missing with sponge rollers lol!

  • I am going to use your suggestions about the cold set thank you!

  • Very imformative! Thanks for posting!

  • I'm going to have to try perm rods, they gave you suuuccchh a beautiful curl! I have the same problem you do, fine, thin, very straight hair, thank gosh for curlers! And I'm finding my hair is too long to achieve styles as well, what length do you think is ideal for 40s to early 50s styles?

  • @court1song Shoulder length and layered...can't wait to be there again. :)

  • I think I am going to stick with the Perm Rods. I haven't had much great results with Pin Curling or regular Sponge Rollers. Though they are really uncomfortable to sleep in..it's like my head is resting on a punch of rocks, the curls were so tight and formed that it was worth it (:

  • Thanks for this video. I didn't realize I shouldn't be rolling the ends right on to the roller. Could you do a video with 60's style big hair? Or something like Mary Tyler Moore's hair in the opening of the first season? I love these styles, but I don't understand how to use rollers to accomplish this.

  • @tashahaines I'll be doing a Bridget Bardot look soon but my hair is too long for those 60's styles you're thinking of...I did do a Joan from Mad Men style a few weeks ago.

  • So many rollers to use from I get mad, I want to try them all and follow your instructions, they very, very complete.

  • You have beautiful hair. :)

  • You have re-sparked my love and interest in vintage styling. My mom almost had to laugh when she got my christmas list b/c half of it was inspired by you: sponge rollers, hot sticks, clip-in flowers, grip tuth combs, pomade, and setting spray

  • I have short hair... how can i do something 1940's style with short hair. Can yo show me?

  • @vgfigue Since I don't have short hair, I'd have to have a model sit for me. I'll keep it in mind.

  • I'm african american I had no problem puttn my hair in one of ur retro styles and all my friends thought it ws the neatest thing.(Lol) Thanks!

  • @jazzmennick28 I'm glad to hear it!

  • Oh man..how many times I woke up with square shaped curls from the smashed rollers! How sad....and that does NOT look very retro...ha!

  • Fabulous! Thank you for this... I have super thick, wavy hair and I always get frustrated with the "fro" I end up with in the morning after sleeping on my foam rollers. I'll try keeping the rollers lower on my head tonight lol.

  • Wow, this is really helpful! I never thought of wrapping my hair around so the ends are in the middle instead of touching the roller. Thanks!

  • I found foam rollers difficult...sleeping in them wasn't that comfy, and I found the curls MUCH too small (my curly hair takes curl well). I wish you could show everyone some sets with brush rollers. I love them, since I can wet-set when I wake (with some Lottabody) and blow-dry the curls. Try them sometime!

  • @flashnflaky Do you sleep in brush rollers? They look very uncomfortable to me. :) I don't have a lot of experience w/ brush rollers due to my hair thickness and length. I've heard they are best for shorter hair that is of medium thickness.

  • @LisaFreemontStreet No, you can't sleep in them...they're too poky! But if you blow or air dry (they're hollow and dry fairly fast) it's so quick you don't need to sleep in them. I do my hair every morning with them . My hair may be curly, but it's SUPER fine and thin. If I didn't have curls, I'd be so sad! The brushes in them make it easier to roll, I think. You're hair right now is probably too long, but would have been OK at your old length, for sure.

  • thanks bunches for making this video.. it helped me a lot. what do you know about the hard plastic rollers that have the snap on clips or the velcro rollers? all i can find here are those as well as the foam. i might have to go grab some foam ones.

  • @daviskrisitna I have covered all the rollers I have a lot of experience w/ in this video...I'm sure other rollers will be dealt w/ eventually. I also use rag rollers and a pin curl setting quite a lot.

  • wow your hair is long.. Looks great.. must of been those prenatal vitamins ;)

  • thank you soooo much!!! i was always wondering about how high up the head the rollers should go :) so yes, thank you

  • what would be best for someone like me who has extremely thick and long hair?

  • @littlemissdaydream25 Whatever you like but you'll need A LOT of them. :)

  • OH! Thank you SO much for doing this video! I always tried my best to follow what you were doing, and I guess I just wasnt getting it. :)

  • My hair is very long, too. And it's rather thick. Would you recommend a curling iron instead of rollers to me? TIA! This is a really helpful tutorial btw!

  • @philosophyofbeauty Curling irons don't work for me at all. The curl doesnt hold and my arms get tired. :(

  • Excellent video! I didn't know that about sponge rollers - very useful, thanks!

  • @FreakWalkOnCeiling Velcro rollers are usually used only for really short hair where other types of rollers won't stay. They are best for granny perm look.

  • Yay! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! (multiply phrase by a million. LOL!) You answered my prayers with this video. I always wondered if I was rolling correctly and I couldn't figure out why my curls would come out crazy huge with the sponge rollers. I was rolling 'em up too high. :D I like that you showed how to use other types of rollers also. Very helpful.

  • I've been curling my hair for years and I still found this video very helpful. Thank you so much! One thing that I've done that I learned from my grandmother is at night, after you wet set your hair, roll your hair up around strips of cloth and then tie the ends of the cloth in a knot to get the "roller" to stay. Sort of like the soft rollers you bought and then twisted at the ends. I just cut up an old undershirt. It's just rags so it's incredibly comfortable to sleep in and the curls look good

  • I love your orange lipstick!!! I went out and got some because it's a great way to look summery in the winter! :)

    Thanks for all the tips!

  • are the ends if your hair damaged?

  • @ivyska718 Yes...my hair has bleach beneath the red so the ends are still evidence of that. I get it trimmed regularly and eventually that part will disappear, though.

  • this was really helpful, thank you! but dang it, my hair is pretty much exactly your length and I was going to let it get a bit longer!

  • i have never known that about sponge rollers, ive always done them loose thanks for the advice!!:D

  • Have you tried rag-curls?

  • @Rockahbilly yep...they work well also. See my video 'Roll With Me'.

  • wow, I never knew that about foam rollers! Now I know... thanks for the tip! :)

  • This video is great, I never really caught how you roll up but it will hopefully make a difference in my curls. I love sponge rollers cause their cheap a dollar a pack.

  • whooa haha this was really helpful thanx ((:

  • which setting lotion do you use?

  • @shellysosa Lottabody Setting Lotion. Diluted in water.

  • Are these the only type rollers you recommend? No magnetic or velcro rollers? Very informative video, thank you for making it.

  • @BluegrassMaddie These are the ones I use often...I have used Velcro rollers before but they tangled in my hair badly so I don't use them any longer. I have no experience w/ the magnetic ones.

  • I was wondering about velcro rollers... my hair comes out dented and frizzy.... anyway to stop that?

  • @FreakWalkOnCeiling I don't use them really so unfortunately I have no advice. :(

  • Hi, thanks for the thorough breakdown...I wondered if you would ever do a Bantu knot out one day...I would love to see how you section and the turnout.

  • @odedaj I have never attempted this style.

  • Keep brushing you say? Hmm.. I'll try that to release the poof.

  • are you letting your bangs grow as well? because i think they're getting quit long now. or is that what you want?

    Greetz!

  • @laylafrackiewicz yes, I've been growing them out for a while now...I'm shooting for chin length.

  • Nice vid!

What kind of rollers do you think are perfect for tiny 1930s curls?

  • @19myself91 foam rollers.

  • I love how long your hair is getting! Thanks for this video! What do you find is the best type of brush to brush the curls out?

  • @kennerzzz I like a Denman nylon bristle brush from Sally's. Lauren Rennells (writer of the book Vintage Hairstyling) uses that brush quite a lot as well.

  • I used to see elderly ladies with heavy, triangular hairnets holding their curlers while they set. Is this type of hairnet used to sleep at night to keep the rollers from slipping out?? Thanks for the rolling refresher! Your hair is soooooo long! :)

  • @debbiechickie5 I wear a chiffon headscarf while I sleep.

  • When you sleep on any type of rollers, do you ever use one of those big ugly nets to keep the rollers from moving or hairs from slipping out? is this what those huge nets for? (It's not a fine hair net for day use...it's very heavy, like nylon fish net). Also, do you have any style that use a hair net or snood?? I love the smoothness a haircut provides on a neck rolled style, without a ton of product.

  • I have naturally curly hair and I've found that to do the retro styles using the sponge rollers is a must!! It gives a different type of curl I guess! :)

  • Wow..your hair is really long! thanks for this one...I know people needed this, and I needed a refresher.

  • You are so helpful! Thanks girl this inspired me to try my rollers out again.

  • Have you ever used Clairols Lock n Roll set?

  • @KimberlyDarling23 yep...I used them for my 1990's big hair! :) I havent used them in years but I wouldnt mind trying them again. :)

  • Love how you roll! :) ♥
