Regarding Africa, FZ mentions in P-Am World the Nigeria case. IMF wanted them to clean up corruption a bit and then China jumped in and gave them the money, no questions asked. Then Zimbawbe, in exhange for iron ore and plat, was given weapons n radio jamming devices, banned by US and EU.
Shame. But we all know America has given weapons to all kinds of folk.
Not perfect but China has certainly boosted Africa with schools, roads, work, etc. Maybe a better Af. legacy than the States so far...
watched this in its entirety...great debates. I however, believe that Team China won. Fareed and Kissinger made faithful and emotional arguments while the Brit and the Chinese guy made factual references.
@charms71 I think BOTH sides made emotional arguments and that is because appealing to the emotional side wins debates too. I thought both sides also made plenty of factual references. Fareed Zakaria's book is awesome and he gives China MAD credit about what they have done. Watching this debate, I chuckled at how he had to hold back on many things or damage his argument.
i think the debate degenerated towards the end with Neil's rather sarcastic yet lacklustre comments. That west has dealt with dictators in Africa is no excuse for China to do the same. two wrongs dont make a right. In fact what Fareed said was quite palpable in Africa. Perhaps Neil could help from acknowledging Chinese companies policies of importing labor from China to work on the copper mines he alleged to have benefited the people of Africa at large. disappoiting to see that come from Neil.
Thank you very much for the CPAC link... what an amazing debate... :) what an amazing panel... I'm a fan of Fareed Z.but it's interesting to see him pwned by Ferguson! x)
@jeaniebaby001 you haven't seen the rest of the debate have you? Ferguson got pwned in the end by Zakaria and Kissinger. However, on this question of aquisition strategies, I'd say Ferguson definitely had the high road.
Why by -pass fundamental dev. questions about Africa. Why is no 1 asking why Africa was the beautiful bride used during slavery and colonialism, exploited post-colonially and now engaged to China. The clear answer is that Africa is missing in the technological map of the world and and very visible in corruption index. Moyo's advice that Africa Aid problems would be solved by sourcing funds in the International Bond Market, is the craziest and most poisonous economic theorising for Africa.
Ferguson is right. As an African living in Africa, I fully appreciate the good the Chinese are doing in Africa.
The Chinese at least have a consistent Africa policy, the West does not. Western policy on Africa is schizophrenic, on the one hand you have bleeding heart liberals and development experts, on the other hand you have the hyper pragmatic Oil and Gas types and the trigger happy AFRICOM. The aims of these two groups are at cross purposes to each other and the West pretends they aren't.
I only see one true way to solve this problem regarding China or any other country that wants to do business in Africa. There needs to be an United States of Africa and we need leaders in Africa that truly care for the people more than they care about their own portfolios. I would also like the see the reset of this debate whenever time permits it. Thank You for posting
Fareed and Ferguson both had excellent points, I agree with both of them to an extent. Chinese investment is good for Africa, but it should be more qualified by attention to the corrupt dictatorial nature of some regimes. Which should also apply to western states who do the same thing. Also, what the hell is Kissinger doing here? He isn't even allowed in half a dozen countries for the twisted things he did under Nixon.
Thank you for sharing this clip ... will look forward to watching the entire debate (Dr Kissinger seems to have come closest to addressing the long-term implications of your question, with Ferguson and his companion focussed only on the short-term).

62% in favor of US, 38% for China
Either way, good debate!
