Its the original Tinman He tried out for the part and got it but when the dress rehersals came they realized he is allergic to the silver makeup So he hung himself in the background to get back at Disney. Thank you have a nice day ;D
Not true...Buddy Ebsen didn't find out he was allergic to the makeup until 2 wks after filming started, and withdrew from the role after being hospitalized b/c of it...in fact, he was home recuperating @ the time this scene was shot. Also, Ebsen didn't kill himself, considering he died of natural causes in 2003(!), making him the oldest surviving non-Munchkin cast member.
Oh, and the movie was made by MGM, not Disney...I don't think Disney even did live action until the 40s.
And I'm not being offensive to you, my dear. I'm just saying this to all the viewers out there who really think that you can see someone hanging on screen. It's no offense to you.
This is the dumbest thing I've heard and seen. There's no one committing suicide here. That's an African Crowned Crane stretching its wings out.
If someone was to hang himself on a set, do you think that the crew behind the camera would notice it and yell CUT? Maybe there was a suicide, but it is nowhere on screen at all. It's obvious that it happen behind the camera or something. There is no hanging munchkin on screen at all. AT ALL!!!
It's definitely a large bird. MGM had animals from the San Diego Zoo and LA zoo in the film including large birds. Jerry Maren, one of the lollipop kids, said that no munchkin committed suicide during the production. Plus, no munchkins were at the MGM Studio when this scene was shot, they weren't even needed till later on in the production.
Omg why is there so many arguments and controversy over this. If you look in the background right before the actors turn around and take off, you can clearly see a large bird bending over and then bringing its neck back up.. and then it spreads its wings right after they pass it. Get lives people. Get lives.
It's definitely a bird. People do not hang themselves upside down.
and for all of you that say we need to look on the "black and white version", the Oz scenes were ALWAYS in color, because that was the whole point, for her life to be black and white, and the oz 'dream' to be color.
Exactly...nice to see someone else "gets it". :-) In fact, they actually decided to film Kansas in B&W and Oz in color before the very first script draft was even written.
defo a bird......if its a munchkin swinging to his death im sure out of all the producers, directors and actors would of seen this before, during or after the shoot was taken or being taken.coming from an acting background this would defo have been spotted by at least one person while filming. while filming producers and directors and actors are aware of there surroundings of what should be in shot and what shouldn't be in shot or what is in shot!! get a grip people !!!
for years i thought it was a hanging but never really looked into it. but now its settled, is it a ghost boy on set or a cardboard cutout of the dad from his early years in 3 men and a little baby. its when his mother visits and carries baby around the apartment.
dumb retarded people this a new version the movie see the original black and white.....and i bet your all lil kids how about you research deeper freaking idiots.....

Yeah, really...also, a peacock can be seen wandering near the Tin Man's cottage earlier in the scene. And even before that scene, there's the crow who steals a piece of the Scarecrow's straw just before "If I Only Had a Brain".
it cant be a bird cuz theres no way they would have a big bird indooors like that and if you look closely you can see him climbing onto sumthing maby 5 sec before u see him hanging himself
There are many places on the Internet that talk about this part of the movie. According to what I've read it certainly isn't a munchkin committing suicide. It certainly does look like a moving bird (probably made out of cardboard or something) that the movie people created for the background of this scene. It wasn't even noticed until it was able to be paused and slowed down on a VHS tape or a DVD.
Why do people always ask "what would a bird be doing on a closed set?" The same reason there are trees and cabins and such- they're making a MOVIE, and this particular scene takes place in a forest, and guess what, sometimes there are birds in forests. No one is suggesting that a random bird wandered in and popped up in the background uninvited.
Yeah, really...why are people so skepitcal that a bird could be present on an indoor set, but have no prob believing that a Munchkin supposedly hung himself and managed to go unseen by an entire film crew?
It looks like a crane facing away from the camera. It's pecking at the ground, then lifts its head. It pecks at the ground again then lifts its head again. It then stretches out its wings at the end. How people can think that's a munchkin hanging himself is beyond me.
It actually looks like a stork moreso then a crane, but anyway I don't see how having animals on a closed set is so shocking. They had animals on the set (these were borrowed from the L.A zoo), including a peacock that can be seen wandering around in front of the Tin Man's shack just before Dorothy and the Scarecrow try to revive him.
Well(if you know anything about film making)you NEVER let an animal run around the set and that's a very random bird. The only REAL bird you see in that scene is a SMALL peacock.(seen only ONCE in the whole movie.)Answer me this. How would it get back there so fast? And it would be tied up so it can't run around. If you think the backround(BG)is painted you're wrong because in that time there wasn't enough time to paint every BG.The BG used is called a "Backdrop",a curtain which can cast a shadow.
I would recommend that you read the history of the movie. There were birds on the set on loan from the LA zoo, including the crane that some thinks is a dead munchkin. The backgrounds are painted, too. I'm not sure what you mean by it getting back there "so fast". I don't see it running in any scenes.
I guess the film makers knew nothing about film making. There are plenty of animals in the film... horses, pigs, chickens, etc. Toto is a real dog, by the way, and he's running loose.
Narfer2000 (and everyone else with this view.) I just want to suggest that there isn't a bird that looks like that and was computer animated in for the "restored" version. people are just guessing what kind of "bird" it is but, their suggestions do not fit the "bird" in the image.
For all of you people who think he suicide is a hoax answer me this. What kind of bird is it? peacock?... NO!! Emu?...NOO! Ostrage? NOOO!!! Crane? NOOOOO!! The "bird" you see can't be any of these for various reasons: A Peacock is too small to be seen there, It's not an Emu because Emus DON'T HAVE WINGS!!! It's not and Ostrage because it's wings are too skinny and WAAAY too long and not fluffy. And finally it is not a crane because it's beak isn't long enough!! Use your eyes and THINK PEOPLE!!!!
Yea I dunno what kind of bird it is but if you "use your eyes" like you say can you not clearly see its a bird? Seems pretty obvious to me. This isn't exactly the patterson big foot tape or anything
its definatley a bird cuz i have the movie and you can see it much better than on the computer. and before it even flaps its wings you can see it move its head up then down and you can see it standing in front of the tree, plus my moms a big wizard of oz finatic and she told me that it was a bird that they brought in to make the forest look more real
There was a giant bird on stage simply for the reason that they wanted to make the forest scene look more realistic with a bird in the forest that moved, on the big screen, you can CLEARLY see the bird, but when it was filmed on VHS and showed on the much smaller screen; of course it was going to be contorted and shrunk to look like some "munchkin" hanging himself.
Its actually a bird NOT A person committing suicide. Sorry to break it to you.
i dont why people are writing "sorry to break it to you" because im just asking for opinions...i think its a bird too....so dont think that i thought it was a munchkin....
Look on other videos of the same footage. It's clearly, beyond doubt, a bird. It in fact acknowledges them with the wing spread as they dance by in perfect timing. I can't believe I even looked this up on youtube. I just wasted five minutes I'll never get back.

But what the hell would a CRANE be doing in a CLOSED SET at MGM Studios, or where ever this was filmed, there wouldnt be a crane,
in my oppion it looks to be a person, but im unsure
BoardwalkProduction 3 years ago
It actually looks like a stork moreso then a crane, but anyway I don't see how having animals on a closed set is so shocking. They had animals on the set (these were borrowed from the L.A zoo), including a peacock that can be seen wandering around in front of the Tin Man's shack just before Dorothy and the Scarecrow try to revive him.
DevilFish69 3 years ago
Lmao.. why would a munchkin hang him/herself anyway.. on the set even

has anyone noticed that the scarcrow looks at the "hanging munchkin" as he falls. next time you watch the clip take a look

Grunge4Life69 3 years ago

MovieFreak555 3 years ago
There was no computer animation in 1939. Yeesh.

MovieFreak555 3 years ago
Yea I dunno what kind of bird it is but if you "use your eyes" like you say can you not clearly see its a bird? Seems pretty obvious to me. This isn't exactly the patterson big foot tape or anything

CincyBengals84 3 years ago
I still see a bird like most people but I can understand how you can also see the suicide.
NintendoMugenFreak 3 years ago
its definatley a bird cuz i have the movie and you can see it much better than on the computer. and before it even flaps its wings you can see it move its head up then down and you can see it standing in front of the tree, plus my moms a big wizard of oz finatic and she told me that it was a bird that they brought in to make the forest look more real
lnm496 3 years ago
That is very clearly a giant bird. I heard they got the animals from the San Diego Zoo.

THIS ISN'T SPAM, DON'T MARK IT AS SUCH:
There was a giant bird on stage simply for the reason that they wanted to make the forest scene look more realistic with a bird in the forest that moved, on the big screen, you can CLEARLY see the bird, but when it was filmed on VHS and showed on the much smaller screen; of course it was going to be contorted and shrunk to look like some "munchkin" hanging himself.
Its actually a bird NOT A person committing suicide. Sorry to break it to you.
YutakanXXVIII 3 years ago
i dont why people are writing "sorry to break it to you" because im just asking for opinions...i think its a bird too....so dont think that i thought it was a munchkin....
joeymesquita94 3 years ago
Dude...it's a bird. On the commentary they even say that they were filming near a zoo that had a collection of exotic birds.
oliviaisbabs 3 years ago
i think so too....i just wanted to replay the vid and see...im asking for what other people think too...thanks for the comments
joeymesquita94 3 years ago
Look on other videos of the same footage. It's clearly, beyond doubt, a bird. It in fact acknowledges them with the wing spread as they dance by in perfect timing. I can't believe I even looked this up on youtube. I just wasted five minutes I'll never get back.
