I agree that O'Toole is brilliant but you have to take it year by year...Forest Whitaker was the best this year just individual directors would beat Scorsese becuase their films were just plain better. Both lucked out.
I agree Whitaker was great, but so was O'Toole and he should win it for his Shakespeare soliloquy alone, when Jodie Whittaker is just out of the bathroom, awkwardly wrapped in a towel, still as yet unsure of her worth. In that one soliloquy O'Toole's Maurice gave her the gift of her worth. Exceptional acting.
Peter O' Toole must get an Oscar for this role. It's a disgrace that his work in Lion and Winter, Becket, and LAWRENCE of ARABIA did not earn him this award that he so clearly deserves. Sure Venus has some unsavory hints of exploiting an elder statesman of the screen, but Peter O'Toole is a true talent and I hope the Academy acknowledges that and gives him an Oscar for his work in "Venus".
