  • ...i think danny can't play that anymore... too bad :( instead they 're playing that shitty ''speed up'' bridge in schism which (in my opinion) ruins the whole song ,(and here comes the shit comments, well, fuck you! in advanced)

  • @BloodMusicTrinity You loser its just a band and the people there are paying to have fun. He is not a God. He is a musician. Now shut the fuck up you godamn loser.

  • @wonderwall135 So when you go to a concert, you dont listen you talk like a retard? thats pretty dumb. Wonderwall faggot

  • @BloodMusicTrinity They're just talking near the beginning, not in the whole song. Good thing people are not dumb retarded shit fucks like you who would just sit still and not say anything in a concert. Loner freak, just because you have no friends and can't talk to anyone doesn't mean everyone else shouldn't. Why don't you shove maynard's dick up your ass you shit stain little prick.

  • I pooped.

  • 7:10 gives me chills

  • the live versions r so much better

  • Danny Carey= most brilliant drummer alive.

  • This has got to be the best version I've seen!

  • THIS SONG IS ABSOLUTELY FUCKING EPIC/ICONIC - BRAVO GENTLEMEN!

  • TOOL IS A COSMIC ORGASM IN THE FORM OF MUSIC!

  • How is 6:46 even possible?

  • @brokecommie05 I know! he's not human

  • the only band that i have found that would ever come close to tool would be led zeppelin, i love them both equally. but it's close!!! tool, haunting and mysterious...they are the band i get high to, get drunk to, make love to,....do everything to!!!!!

  • most outstanding band ever...

  • Why do americans talk so much during concerts?

  • "Think for yourself, question authority kind of fun." Aw, yeah. :) and then into one of my favorite songs ever.

  • Pretty sure this video changed the mindset of this song for me.

  • Danny Carey: A very Talented motherfucker

  • @LGee89 Agreed !!!

  • tool i swear you go mainstream...

JUST KEEP DOING WHAT YOUR DOING TOOL!!

  • @TheMuscleHamster77 Hoockerwitha Penis.

  • The new album, if we see one, will have to be the most ridiculous expose on prog metal ever created, otherwise I'm choosing Primus as my favorite all time. Tool, I know you don't listen to fans, but the next album better be ridiculously epic. I want you to put all other music to shame. I want you to make something that catches the worlds attention instead of just your fan base. Something so good that everyone must listen. Dethklok style lol..but i know, im just a fan. GO TOOL!

  • There is a demon posses him when he play live!

  • @s3dooooooooooooooon haha funny

  • lol love the song, good quality for a live recording. epic seats btw!

  • I reckon that if Danny Carey and Jimmy Chamberlain played two drum kits next to one another, the energy given off could power the Sun for another 30 billion years.

  • I respect each and everyone of these artists. good job!

  • @Curtislj How so? His voice or what?

  • The performance/sound is fucking unreal, props to there sound crew!

  • I think my nose is bleeding

  • @TheZildjian420 chuck a tampon in it.

  • its about wanting something and not needing it, just to breath ,feel and know your alive.

  • The song is about whatever you want it to be about.

  • Do you know what I like about Tool? Everything

  • @bredding1203 you know what i don't like about Tool, the fact that we haven't seen or heard from them in almost 5 years!.

  • @HelloFade2 Well I saw them in 2010 so I got my fix, but I am definitely more than ready for some new material! Pretty exited to see what direction they go with the new album.

  • Dang!!!! Danny is a freaking badass!! Chills just chills

  • Huntington st. is around I suppose :)

  • wow to of seen this live.. i woulda freaked knowing the song..and seeing the ending... def want this on mp3 asap :P

  • i think maynard has the best seat in the house at 6:20

  • Maynard is awesome, his live voice puts a special touch to each song

  • i miss hungtion st

  • @llawevets i know right

  • I totally agree with Dewey1040!!!

  • I think the general meaning is more of desensitized to everything... pluck from it what you will

  • Sounds like shit

  • PLEASE IF ANYONE KNOWS THE USER WHO POSTED THE "STINKFIST GOOD SOUND QUALITY" PLEASE LET ME KNOW. THAT HAD THE BEST SOUND QUALITY WITH THIS VIDEO BEING SECOND. THEY TOOK THE OTHER ONE DOWN. PLEASE HELP ME FIND IT!!!! IF I FIND IT I WILL POST ON UTUBE AND A TORRENT

  • @powderking5 it was a user by the name of killzy. Yeah that was the best live stinkfist vid, but they're down now :[

  • Fisting is certainly the metaphor....but it's about the disappearance of the small things, the subtleties in life. There's constant internet porn available, more and more sex on TV, 24/7 news, fucking reality TV show bullshit. There's not a lot of mystery to anything anymore. People don't wonder at all anymore or ask deeper questions. Most music put out today is the same way. There's nothing there to make you ask why...bands like Tool don't really exist today. Everything is way too accessible.

  • @satch1979 That's a good explication -- I haven't even looked at it like that. Though I think that this dissent of experience is what Maynard would have of his lyrics, though this goes back to what you hinted about subtleties and our very Western need of immediate access and instant gratification, which makes us feel empty like nothing's there inside because we don't wonder and look deeper into ourselves or others. Good thing there's a vocalist who's willing to search up all our asses...

  • @satch1979 Well put, friend.

  • Ho ho ho! Merry Xmas! Vote for the best of TOOL.

    TOOL NEEDS YOU!

  • "wooh! an artist said something!! wooh!!"

  • @dcryan77 so you're supposed to be quiet? WoW, I'd love to go to concerts with you.

  • Danny is simply God.

  • My God. Danny is a fucking beast.

  • Come to the East coast!!!!!!!

  • incredible talent especialy from the drummer!

  • This is arguably my favorite Tool song. I like it because (IMO) it describes extremes in today's society using such a disgusting metaphor that makes me go, "ouch". I really do think that Maynard meant for many of his lyrics to be humor in seas of very serious topic matter...Dude is deep beyond words!

  • danny is well damn...astonishing

  • i can't make much more than "WWF" "MTV", "kind of fun that drives republicans crazy"... can anyone tell me exactly what he's saying from 0:44 till they start that song at 2:05?

  • Overexposure to something, no matter how good it is, will cause desensitisation to it. You'll become bored, and start forcing yourself to try new, sometimes dangerous or strange things, simply to avoid this boredom of repetition. This will also cause you to find out more about yourself (or 'go deeper' within yourself). After wearing out what is socially accepted as 'normal', you'll seek more extreme, less subtle forms of pleasure.

All of this summed up nicely in an analogy about fist-fucking.

  • "Sameness is tiresome; variety is pleasing." - Mark Twain

  • @mikebulzary

    Nice.

  • Tool are artists, just like ones who paint abstract art, they leave your mind to wander. Open to your own interpretation. Tool are the best musicians out there because of that, nobody else puts so much into their music and allows your mind to be opened when you least expect it.

  • tool are actually too epic for me.

  • Me and my friend have discussions over whos the better drummer..danny carey vs, Travis barker from blink 182....the answear is beyond obvious..but he doesnt seem to understand...help me out guys

  • @jubsjobs90 get new friends

  • "The kind of fun that drives Republicans nuts."

  • @Wirelessbum

I'm Republican and I know how to have fun. =P

I hate it when people get political >=0

  • I tend to subscribe to the thought that Tool lyrics mean whatever anyone wants them to mean. Is this song about fisting? If you think it is, sure (I think you're an idiot if that's ~all~ you think it means, but that's neither here nor there).

You could also apply the following meanings to this song:

    Addiction

    Vampirism

    Cultural, Emotional, or Mental Stagnation

    Mental Abuse/Domination.

The key is to go with what you feel works best.

(Oh, and The Pot isn't about weed)

  • Danny Carey is a fuckin beast

  • Danny kicking ass!!

  • In an earlier live video of StinkFist i saw on youtube, Maynard actually states "this song is about change." I think it was on the tour where he kept introducing Justin Chancellor in funny ways.

  • they are so freakin good live

i saw them last night :)

    it was so awesome

  • imo best drummer of em all

  • Yeah, the whole fisting thing is metphorical

  • This song is probably about how mechanized and stagnant our society has become. The only way to feel any life any emotion is to go outside the norms and venture into perceived taboo, to get a new high from the normalcy of a fatalistic machine known as life. It is about pushing the limit on society to evolve beyond present restrictions "push the envelope... watch it bend". To also feel something instead of the cold dull reality surrounding us. It is bringing our innate and primal instincts first.

  • adam has to be the trippiest guitar player ive ever heard. thats the part of Tool that grants them the incredible trippy sound.

  • Summer tour starts in less than a week!

  • no description available

    Best description possible

  • tool is my love

  • carey prolly the greatest drummer to ever live

  • Generally Tool does a good job staying out of politics. I wish they'd do that more. And we all know the things he mentioned at the beginning are stupid, but he didn't have to say it. I love tool, but it's not classy.

  • Tool is a band that will never grow old...I can see them playing at their late 80s...

  • Maynard's really not the one you want to focus on during the songs if you are recording or watching. Watch Danny for his insane drumming or Justin because he totally gets into it.

  • @Smaugren He performs behind the band, unlike most lead singers. Therefore "focusing on the band".

  • camera man is pissing me off

  • to me the meaning of the lyrics is way too easy to separate from just sexual fisting.

  • @christiannandres Yeah the song lyrics are a personal experience sculpture of words and the music rocks. Earth Force. I think the song title just got slapped on, the lyrics to me are about the coming and going of relationships between people.

  • 6:00 ...that's the part you are here for right?

  • "If [you] really look at it and really look at us and who we are, [you'll] understand that we go a little deeper than some write-off song about fist-fucking."

  • Why hell are people like "if you don't think this you're not a Tool fan". Who gives a shit how you view the lyrics of the song? If you like the music, you like the music.

  • over thinking

    over analyzing

seperates the body from the mind

  • seperating from the mind is the exact thing Maynard doesn't want you to do. He says that. No analyzing or overthinking really, just listening and commenting.

  • I think there is contradiction in someone saying they are a big supporter of free thinking and questioning authority and then also states that such free thinking is a key component to one specific political agenda. "Think freely on issues -- that's what democrats do!" -- what? Free thinking isn't associated with an agenda -- that's not free thinking. I lvoe Tool, but you know what I am saying?

  • you are seriously over analysing.

  • It's a joke.

  • I def understand you, but, I must add that he doesn't say "Democrats are honest and trustworthy." What he says is "Fun that drives the Republicans crazy." That doesn't mean he is showing support for anyone else, just that he is bashing the contemporary Republican agenda as presented by the the media outlets.

  • True, he doesn't voice support for dems. But, I think that's it's safe to assume that making disapproving statements about one party is seen as showing support for the other and a lot of that is because we are blasted with battles between the two parties. I have little doubt it was a pro-dem statement but I can't prove that. I can just prove that his statement was anti-repub.

  • There are more then just the two parties, even within the "Two Party System" we have today. Dem. and Rep. are just the two main parties. So, I guess with that reasoning he could be showing support for the Independent Parties as well. Either way, like you said there is really no conclusive evidence of a political agenda, just whatever we interpret.

  • If you really think this song is about fist fucking you aren't a tool fan, every single song maynard has written for tool has had a deeper meaning...

"Time to bring it down again.

    Don't just call me pessimist.

Try and read between the lines."

  • im pretty sure people can take what they want from it and you are in no position to decide if someone is a fan or not.

  • @Dewey1040

Maynard said that he won't tell the meaning of any songs, only that the listener chooses it's meaning. So if you want to think it's about fisting, then go right ahead.

  • @DontRunBand im pretty sure he says that just to get people off his back. hes a chill guy i dont think he wants people bugging him about the meaning.cmon now...

  • @DontRunBand maynard said it's about fistfucking actually

  • @39ax Actually, During an interview, Keenan stated that the song is titled after a friend of drummer Danny Carey who "isn't afraid of getting his hands dirty." He also stated that it can be interpreted as being about "fist-fucking" but "if [you] really look at it and really look at us and who we are, [you'll] understand that we go a little deeper than some write-off song about fist-fucking." Fist fucking is in actuality a metaphor for the real cause of ailment. Quote him as a whole. lol

  • @DontRunBand I think fisting plays a part in it... using fisting as a metaphor to say something else

  • @DontRunBand I agree that Maynard said that but I have interviews which he does tell the meanings like Sober, Stinkfist and the entire Lateralaus album. But thats it lol

  • @DontRunBand yeah the real meaning behind any tool song is far deeper than what any of us can comprehend on our own. You have to figure 4 musicians, 4 personalities with different experiences and influences that created the song, and each member may have their own interpretation of the song yet. So its safe to say that whatever interpretation or meaning of a tool song you may create, its YOUR interpretation; and i prefer it that way.

  • @DontRunBand fuck you its about goatse, isn't that obvious? The metametaphysicaltroll references are clear in this one.

  • @DontRunBand Even Maynard says it himself. "This next song is about....Anal Sex!"

Though I think its more about a relationship between two individuals, a love/hate, where they are pained to be involved in the other's lives, but they continue on, because they know that they love each other.

  • @DontRunBand its like art, "a picture is worth a thousand words", maynard wants people to look at it like art

  • @DontRunBand all we know about him is what he sold us. i cant WAIT TO BUY THE NEXT ONE....cuz im kinda a dip wearin vans and 501's

  • damn... I was at this concert...

    watching this brings back memories...

    awesome night.

    Thanks for posting this.

  • this jus fuckin rawks in all aspects of that which fuckin rawks!

  • I'm just going to say, anyone that actually listens to Maynard, knows that he writes about stuff that matters, and makes you think. Not stupid shit.

  • anyone that knows Tool, and Maynards lyrics, couldnt possibly think its about fisting...comeon. Apparently in this forum, there is not a clue.

  • He did say that it had a different meaning about "choosing compassion over fear" but he also said the song was named after a friend of danny's who "isn't afraid of getting his hands dirty"

  • by the way there needs to be some kind of "dannycam". I must say i enjoy watching him the most. He's a goddamn beast. lol

  • it's about how an addiction takes over the life of the addicted.

    *note*

-it's most likely not about a specific addiction. the song can be applied to all kinds of addiction.

  • Immaculate drumming

  • 7:13 is fucking amazing best part of whole song jeeeeez i love that transition

  • OH MY GOD. that was incredible. that's what you call a toolgasm.

  • @Dave4109 lmao agreed man

  • "WERE SAN DIEGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

    I lol'd

  • Wow...that took me back. As one friend of mine said, "On a scale of one to ten, the Lateralus tour was a fifteen." That is a bad ass video! Thank you for sharing.

  • damn evrything is perfect the voice the song the band

    aPerfecTOOL

  • High-Hat rape FTW! 5/5

  • "the kind of fun that drums republicans nuts" o my god i love it lmao

  • @werd9495 drives, not drums -- hehe. either way, rock on

  • o oops i didnt even realize that i meant "drives" idk what possessed me to type drums lol yea rock on!!

  • wow, from 6:20 to 7:10, Maynard is just staring at Danny, and at 6:32, he's like "woah are you guys watching this???"

  • Troll.

  • @ToOlOGT22 GO, DANNY, GO!

(Because of the bad quality of the video, I thought, at the end, Danny was playing with two sticks in each hand! Man, that would've been s.i.c.k.!)

  • Tool= perfection, nice 2 c all these comments about the greatness of tool

  • Love this version, love these drums. Danny is, well its obvious that the man is a drumming saint. This band are really fantastic.

  • Well in an interview this song is supposedly about a friend of danny's who liked anal fisting. maybe the boarderline is somebodies asshole and somebody is "shoulder-deep within it"

  • Lol state the obvious much.......I mean of course thats what its about no need to remind us.

  • well some others were confused about the origin of the song, so there was a need to bring it up

  • CONFIRMED!

  • @LizardKing1324

It works on two levels, the fist fucking aspect of it is only a small part.

  • Just out of curiousity......how do you think Maynard went about getting his shoulder deep within the boarder line????

  • lots and lots of lube by friend.
