@FucklyDuckly Yes it was a car accident. He was in a van, lying down in the back with a fever and when the fan flipped he was thrown from the rear, breaking his neck. Damn sad.
I'm a huge punk fan but i have to admit that some punk bands can get kind of stale, thank god for bands like The Minutemen, Husker Du and the Meat Puppets for taking punk rock and doing something completely original with it
Minutemen, Seven Seconds, RHCP, Circle Jerks, Fear, Bad Brains etc etc - while it sucked working at McDonalds in High School me and Bird jammed the late shift. Bucket hits in the crew room, etc etc. lol just keep playing the song...
Words cannot explain how much I adore this band, this song, these men, and everything the saying We Jam Econo is about. This is so bittersweet, it gets me to tears ever time. We Jam Econo became a saying I use in everyday life, and this band really changed my life. Just like how punk rock changed theirs. I love how this is an end to The Minutemen, but a beginning to fIREHOSE, another love of mine. THIS, is what the 80's mean to me.
im lookin to buy one of there albums. i kno a couple of songs from em. probably gonna get double nickles on the dime. is it a good album to start off with?
Theres as good a place to start as any, I'd say. It's a really huge album in scope but take it slow and I'm sure you'll love it. Also check out some of their earlier EPs and whatnot.
Get everything by them, even the muddy live recordings are gems Eskimo. If you're just getting into them, I would STRONGLY suggest the DVD "We Jam Econo" if you're interested... Great story about a great band formed from solid friendships... but be forewarned, some "punks" are just "too cool" for this band. Their loss, not mine.
fuck man, my love for this band has changed so much. they used to be just this cool band and now they're like this inspiration to just play honestly, live honestly. this is an amazing performance and i really wanna see the film.
Whenever someone wants to pigeonhole punk I always bring up this band. I always thought that the punks and the beatniks had a close connection and this is what I mean.
amen . I remember when rodney on the roq announced the passing of what could have been, the death of D.Boon.never really cared for punkers ,they always seemed to have tunnel vision. in their peer approved outfits. "fuck all the rules" as long as you think i'm cool?
Now I know this is from the documentary (I believe, correct?).
The Minutemen were geniuses for what they were. I would not be surprised to see a film made about them (not the doc.) -- in one way or another. They're a tale of tragedy, friendship and the rather smart/well thought out music that they stood for -- while still keepin to the basics -- which I respect.
You won't see another band like this in a lifetime.
KingCast and Chris King's 1st Amendment page jams econo with Civil Rights, references the Minutemen often through his blog, including today, 17 Feb. 2008 in a blog post about a nasty NH State Rep., Martha McLeod, who tried to honor a bad cop who harassed the community of Franconia.
the Minutemen were one of the most captivating bands, ever. they refused to be limited by categorizes and made music on their own terms. the punk ethos, right? and like Fugazi, they were all about integrity. watching this now puts a lump in my throat. because you know with the real convictions that the Minutemen had, when D. Boon sings "punk rock changed our lives", you know he meant it...
first time I ever saw Mike Watt was on a Sublime DVD and just the way he described stuff and carried on about all these little details, I could really relate with that, very passionate about life to say the least
honestly, the minutemen move me in a really weird way. i've actually just recently got really into them and now i can't go a day without 'em. d. boon, mike watt, george hurley! that's where it's really at. D. Boon will never die, he's alive as can be everytime i hear him.
Seriously! after viewing this again it's just unbelievable how full of emotion the Minutemen really were.
Notice when D Boon says "just me 'n Mike Watt playin' guitar" and Mike just can't help but smile but suddenly become serious again in order to concentrate. It doesn't get more genuine than this stuff, so humble, so devoid of pretension.
hard to listen to this and not get a little veclempt , RIP D. BOONE !!!!
