RRVCrinale, USAC allowed the Mercedes pushrod engine for 1995 but with less boost. In 94 it has 55inHG of boost same as the Menard, Buick & Greenfield engines, after the 500 USAC cut back the boost to 52inHG and reduced it further to 48inHG in April 95. This was why Roger Penske decided not to run it in 95 even when Al jr & Emmo struggled all month. Also this engine was banned for all CART sanctioned races but the Indy 500 was sanctioned by USAC at the time
Tony George was the Jean Todt of indycar. he made ridiculous rules and favored one team. it showed through said rules that he favored Penske. Todt favored Ferrari by nibbling into so to speak the other teams budgets.
I wonder why instead of banning the Mercedes engines they just didn't let everybody turn up the power on engines of the type the PC23s had. Maybe Indycar would've still been the king of speed if that change was made instead back then.
let's face it, OW will never be as good as it used to be. i hear that we won't see any significant changes in indycars till 2012, not the first predicted 2011.
Yeah aint that a bitch. It pisses me off how they're taking they're damn time, which isnt bad, but with the IndyCar series is right now you'd think they'd be anxious to get more fans.
Yeah thats true, I dont think I go a day without seeing or hearing a nascar driver whereas the IRL drivers are virtually unheard of. The IRL has poor promotion, which is why they are in the situation they're in. Since F1 doesnt race at Montreal anymore, the IRL would EXTREMELY benefit from racing there, but I dont see anything being done.
Well I watch F1, and last season was pretty badass theres no denying it. I love watching Le Mans too, well I just about watch any race series cuz I just love racing.
no, not pure...there's traction control now, and MotoGP is run by Dorna... read, we'll do whatever Dani Pedrosa wants because his manager Alberto Puig has clout with Repsol. I LOVE that Rossi just keeps winning...
U gotta be kidding me, rite? Mindy has been much worse than it's been in the past. How many cars did CART have in 1994? How many cars did EARL have in 2007? How many chassis, engines and manufacturers did CART have in 1994 while Mindy had in 2007? Gimme a break!

The racing in this video simply reminded me the Indy 500 of '97 or '98. It was just like that then. Now of course its different, and I say better. Indy now is better than then. And it feels real good.
Then I really don't understand you. First, the political thing doesn't matters me, only the sport.
Let's start with racing: Look how close they raced on the one-mile-ovals, you don't see this anymore. And look at Indy. Then they raced from the start. Now, they are crusing around for 180 laps and its really easy to stay on the lead lap. 2007 was different, because there was a big chance of rain, but look at 2006...
drivers are better? Scott Dixon, Dan Wheldon, Helio Castroneves, Ryan Briscoe, Tony Kanaan, Marco Andretti, Danica Patrick, Hideki Mutoh (to name the drivers of the top teams) are better than Nigel Mansell, Emerson Fittipaldi, Mario Andretti, Jacques Villeneuve, Michael Andretti, Al Unser Jr., Bobby Rahal, Paul Tracy, Adrian Fernandez? Please!Teams: Then: Penske, Ganassi, Newman-Haas, Forsythe Green, Rahal-Hogan, Walker Racing. Now: The same one, except some left. safety+ in every racing!

They might be less known, but they are better, of course, its difficult to compare. By your logic the Harron, DePalma were even better... Racing is much closer these days, there are usually 10-15 drivers with a great chance to win. Then it was two-three man race, pretty boring, and having just few cars on lead lap. Car reliability was awful.
That's why Indy then has much more fans then now... I understand! In 1994 we had more teams winning races than in 07... And about lapped cars: If you can go flat out even some short tracks, you know why there is no selection anymore! It's because, it's so easy to drive these modern IndyCars. Look at the raod courses, there is a much higher selection!
If you want to be taken serious, you shouldn't write such inconsiderate things, especially about driver quality...!
We all know that is not IRL in this video, knock it off! Well the other comments directed at you gives me a negative view on you based on your post, anyways I'm not going into details with you.
IRL and now the losing CCWS these days are running spec engines and chassis. CART was way better than those two. In my view CART had one of the best OW products I have ever seen in history in the 80's and 90's.
@AJ1964 what the hell are you watching champ car was the best and IRL or izod indy car serise sucks with flying tipping crap wagons and tony george is unemployed now and dont forget it was his idiotic idea to allow those huge engines that penske dominated the 1994 indy 500 with.

What a strange and off year for Mansell. RIP Ayrton Senna

The Penske cars of Al and Emmo durnig the running of the 94 Indy 500 were a masterpiece
of Motor Racing Engineering.

The Penske Mercedes PC23 is a masterpiece of engineering, this car dominated the 1994 ChampCar season.

Everything came right in that car, for sure. Not the greatest qualifying car, but superbly balanced to race.

When I first saw the Penske cars go in formation like that, I thought it was coolest thing ever. It's still pretty cool.
