  • It's too obvious a film to be as good as some people would have you believe.

  • I've never been a huge Scorsese fan, even if I respect his films, but I did enjoy this. It has B-Movie material, but it does not feel like one. Tarantino's practically are because they look and feel like B-Movies. But this did have some interesting cinematography. I thought it was a very intelligent popcorn thriller. The plot twist towards the end had me yelling "What the hell"...Oh, and the musical score WAS quite good as well.

  • Also Shutter Island was brilliant. The critics don't seem to like it, but it's really genius in the way it was shot. It's something that deserves to be viewed twice to really see the masterpiece come together.

  • @biggles1111 the 'crappy' cinematography was purely intentional. the continuation errors etc was supposed to emulate the way films were shot back in the 50s/60s to create the tone of the context it was set in.

  • Movie was decent enough, but it was, through a filmmakers point of view, horribly shot! Alot of continuing errors and such, really sloppy work. Not okay for a highbudgetfilm!

  • @biggles1111

If you watch most Scorsese movies closely (from Raging Bull onwards, certainly including Goodfellas) you'll find a great deal of continuity errors.

Scorsese adressed that in an interview once and justified it in some way. I remember thinking that that makes sense for brutal, fast-paced docudramas like Casino, but less sense for conventional story movies like Shutter Island.

  • @biggles1111 "through a filmmakers point of view" lol. good one.

  • A lot of critics don't seem the praise Shutter Island as much as I think it should be! I though this film was fantastic and one of Marty's best pieces of work.

  • Richard Gere Dies!! Classic!!

  • I loved it too, but for completely different reasons, I didnt think it was silly at all

  • "Oh no, nymphos!" *cue laughter from Mayo*

  • interesting that mark drew a comparison between the music in shutter island and the music in the shining. they both use bits of krystof penderecki (sp?) in their respective soundtracks.

    good ear mark!

  • @deliman Some Penderecki in The Exorcist soundtrack too.

  • I very much enjoyed this, loved the old school conventions bit of noire aswell

  • shutter island was a great movie

  • Scorcese's obsession with stuffing in as much music as possible into his films really bothers me, and it does increasingly so. At least he uses Penderecki in Shutter Island, but the music in films like Goodfellas, Casino, and going back to Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore seem incredibly self-indulgent.

  • I didnt see the twist coming...but then I really wasnt trying lol. I really liked Shutter Island though.

  • haha didn't imagine them to look so cool

  • I loved this movie, although I must be too young to recognize the typical B-movie conventions, the twist really got me at the end. The honking music made me laugh, throughout the movie I didn't hear a few lines of dialog. Great movie, great review

  • @mermaydlondon i must agree. as mark says, it's quacks

  • I really enjoyed this movie. It was interesting and always kept you with the mystery. My favorite part was the ending because it fucks with your mind and almost makes you question reality.

  • I thought this was gonna be a great movie, but, unfortunately, this has to be one of the worst movies i have seen all year. Not even Leonardo DiCaprio and Ben Kingsley can save this. First 20 minutes were gud, but then it became very boring and confusing. The ending, instead of being straightforward, had to be muddled up (I only got a tiny gist of it), although if the book did this then i cant blame the movie. To compare the two Leo DiCaprio 2010 movies, Inception is 10 times better than this!

  • @MbFilmReviews apparantly the movie follows exactly the same plot as the book, dicaprios last line of dialogue was added in though.

  • I didn`t find the music too pervasive but the film was a real disappointment.

  • Shutter Island is brilliant. The score is great too.

  • the movie was stunning but unfortunately for me I guessed the whole plot during the first scene on the boat. not bragging but it was really easy from the start.

  • That sounds like the plot of Charles Dexter Ward.

  • While you're at it Marty why not do"JFK- THE SUICIDE","RFK- THE FALL OFF THE LADDER" then top it off with your masterwork "LITVINENKO- FROM KGB TO E.COLI". I would have expected this sort of revisionist effluence of Cretin Twattingtitfuck but not Marty. I know I know £17 more fool me...

  • Just seen it.Pile of pwp. I enjoyed the feverish frothing mouthed 2hrs Scorsese wrote but when he was hauled away in a white coat Nick Rockefeller wrote a pitifully lobotomised 15mins ending. It didn't work in Identity, kpax or dallas so why do it again? Psychology students may sniff their own farts over this but I want my £17 back! Btw if you believe operation paperclip,mk ultra happened apparently you are delusional. Nice! Phoenix films hmm? So the men in white coats are always right?Shillout!

  • Simon Mayo essentially fills the role of Donny in The Big Lebowski.

  • Having seen quite a few of these reviews I have to ask has Simon Mayo actually ever seen a movie? Mind you has Mark ever introduced Too Shy by Kajagoogoo quite liderally folks?

  • Sorry Mark i really liked it.

  • mayo is an arsehole. kermode should do this show on his own, itd be far better, because mayo doesnt even have any constructive input anyway, all he does is detract from the show in general with his un-funny un-witty little comments, usually showing his serious lack of film knowledge

  • @GoinDownToJunkieTown

yes, he's the exact extreme opposite of mark who is bright, intelligent, witty , funny, its a shame they are paired like this, he completely drags the fun out of it all with his pointless, boring 'grown up' responses to marks spontaneity

  • I didn't see it coming :-/

  • "Oh no, nymphos!" xD

  • @JackRabbitSlim

Please God, make that film with Jason Statham.

  • Kermode is spot on about Scorsese having fun with what is basically "kitsch" material, but does it so much better than pretenders like Tarantino, who has based his whole career on repackaging "kitsch" , yet trying to market it as "art" in itself..Tarantino has neither the chops nor the knowledge to bring it off like Scorsese does, and Marty does it with love and acknowledgement for cinema and film history whilst Tarantino simply wants to point out repeatedly how clever he is

  • I think Kermode keeps overlooking the aesthetic aspects, but then again, he's only giving his oppinion of the movie, as a whole, and perhaps that's what a critic should do.

  • i loved the film the twist messed me up lol

  • MRS preston

  • I was thinking all the way through the movie. The only twist that could really surprice me, is if it WASNT all in his head.

The whole movie is one long cliche, but never the less, I have to agree with the good doctor, actually quite entertaining. Scorsese knows how to build suspense, even if you figured the "twist" 10 minutes in... which you will.

  • @donjehova

It fooled me completely! I don't think everyone will figure out the twist 10 minutes in it was quite well done I thought!

  • @donjehova spoiler alert!!!!!

  • oh no, hymphos!

    classic

  • I like Kermode but IMHO he's way off the mark (no pun intended) with this one. Scorsese is better than "throwaway". I really didn't like this film one iota. The music was incredibly annoying and for a critic who rightly lambasted Transformers 2 for being insulting it seems strange that he would be so quick to defend SI for being the same. This director gave us Raging Bull, Goodfellas and King Of Comedy for goodness sake!

  • @Barrbarian He doesnt say Scorsese is throwaway, just that this film is.

  • @Barrbarian

Yeah but he also gave us that other great emperor without clothes, The Departed - another of his genre pieces that, like this, fell completely flat for me.

  • "Richard Gere dies." HA! I laughed my ass off at that. Bravo, Mr. Kermonde, Bravo!

  • its funnier in the podcast as he does hachi just before he does shutter island and says there is 2 tear moments but doesnt reveal them then he does shutter island and ends it on that

  • best movie in the ho fuckin world god movie rock its so fuckin bad fuckin love it 5star movie L c youer the shit man

  • Eh?...speak English!

  • Most enjoyable film I've seen in months.

  • the good doctor spot on as usual.

    enjoyed the film alot.

  • I thought it was absolutely incredible film, of course if all you hear is "look out for the twist, look out for the twist" it's going to take away from the overall experience and distract you from the actual film.

I thought the acting, special effects, soundtrack and storyline were all excellent, and am glad Mr Kermode finally got around to saying he enjoyed it.

  • I wasn't trying to see the big twist but.. It was impossible XD

    good movie tough..

  • i wasn't trying to see the big twist.. but it was impossible XD

  • I wasn't trying to see the big twist.. but It was impossible XD

  • This is a great movie. I saw it last night and it really affected me and I was really immersed. It did it's job and it was terrifying.

There is denfinitely music from 'The Shining' at the start. The music form where Danny is on his trycle.

  • Richard Gere dies! HAHA!

  • Totally agree with the Ben Kinglsey comment xD

  • NOW I GET THE GERE THING YAY !!!

  • I know it's been said elsewhere, but Di Caprio looks like a child wearing his dad's suit...

  • Average film. Leonardo overacts and can never keep his accent consistent. He is overrated. The carefully crafted sequences with music call for too much attention and don't flow with the rest because Scorcese is trying hard. He isn't the cinema master whom many people are calling. His films are brutal and lack sensibility and subtlety, that is why his gangster films are good, and anything else he attempts turns out to be over the top, campy or average.

  • @DoctorHello

What about Raging Bull!? I disagree with you but there's really no point in arguing as your opinion will most definately not change and we'll only annoy each other hahah.

  • @DoctorHello I take it you have never seen Raging Bull? King of Comedy? Age of Innocence? New York, New York? Put it this way, you are talking crap. Get back to watching Independence Day

  • It's an average film. Leonardo overacts and can't keep the accent on. The carefully-crafted cinematic sequences call for too much attention and don't fit with the rest. It's because Scorcese isn't trying hard and is too self-conscious of the fact that he 'must' create a masterpiece. People who say Scorcese is a master of cinema are simply overstating. He is excellent at American gangster film period

  • i thought this was a good film and i wasnt expecting the ending but it was still good. although id rather the story ply otu how it appeared i think itt would hve been good

  • Fun reviews. Good work as always Mark.

  • Wow. The honking does sound like the shining initial scene! Watching this movie on wednesday! cant wait!!!

  • "Richard Gere dies." LOL

  • Really well executed and atmospheric, but too predictable for my liking.

  • @RockBottomRiser21

Just wondering here foegive me. Were you informed there was a twist before hand and maybe therefore looking out for it? It completely fooled me you see heheh. It made for a great cinematic experience but when I read of everyone calling it predictable I start to feel pretty damn inadequate hahah.

  • @benwaddelling Don't feel inadequate. No one could have predicted the things that were revealed at the end. At the very most, they figured something was off with Leo's character. Did they figure out what his partner's role was? Did they figure out Dr. Cawley's motives? It's an illogical ending, so I doubt anyone just came to that conclusion while sitting in the theatre. When folks say they figured out the twist, they need to indicate what PERCENTAGE of the twist they supposedly figured out.

  • cape fear is GREAT, couldn't disagree more

  • Oh no.... NYMPHOS!

  • "Lots of hand action at the moment" LOL

    I love it.

  • Session 9 is a very similar film, but much much better. If you want the best horror film set in a creepy asylum, that's my pick.

  • 'Richard Gere dies.' HAHHAH omg that was hilarious.

  • great film

  • anyone else this caprio is channelling liotta in goodfellas with that voice?

  • @DanzNewzMachinima Not in shutter island, he crawls from the wreckage dragging the dog to safety in his teeth.

  • i listened to the whole show this is a reference to earlier when he wouldnt ruin the new gere film about that dog
