I do maple syrup as a hobby and looked into doing birch. While we have a good amount of birch trees around here they all seem to be quite young and thin. Its rare for me to see one of tappable size in the woods, I only really see them in peoples yards.
Guess if I wanna taste some I'm just going to have to order it.
does the birch sap season start before or after the maple season , cause ive noticed that they dont run at the same time , but wen im done with the maples im to tired to do the birch
Anyway I can get birch syrup online, sure as hell can find it in N.Y. How does this compare to Maple Syrup, is it cheaper, Maple is expensive and with the financial times we are living a cheaper alternative is welcomed(or a better tasting one).
Great video! thnkx 4 posting! This is my first year tapping birch trees & i was wondering why some sap is a golden color like apple juice ? is it still drinkable?
I am currently tapping birch for syrup in Thompson Mb. First time and it is costing me a small fortune. Learning lots and making a few costly mistakes.(burning syrup)... Learning lots anyways... Will do it again but much differently.
That's great! I hope the season ended up okay for you. It's tricky making birch syrup as it scorches easily. I hear you about the costs and learning curve. Good on ya to try it out!

So the birch sap starts after the maple sap is done? Hmmm, maybe I'll try making it next year. Will order some first to see how it tastes!

whats the best birch to tap?, i have heard that black and yellow are the best.
shillelaghslaw 3 years ago
We tap white birch but one can tap any birch really. I'm not sure which is the "best", but I'd say white birch is pretty darn good!!

Amazing process, thank you for sharing your life's work. I am envious.

Takes a lot of fire-wood to boil it down doesn't it?
How much does it sell for? Heard the prices are up to 5 times more expensive than maple syrup..
Anyways great video :0)

It does take a lot of firewood, about 6-8 cords in two weeks.
It sells for more than maple but certainly not 5 times. A 125mL bottle can sell for $10-$17 CAD.
Thanks!
