@weboyz158 nope any dog is capable of being aggressive remember that. Look up aggressive golden retriever and aggressive lab. Thats why when you see a "friendly" breed of dog you should still ALWAYS ask before you pet it. Just because most are known for being nice doesnt make them all nice. Its how they are raised and trained. My lab hated people. He would growl if they tried to pet him but he wouldnt go out and attack and bark at strangers only if they hurt me or touched him.
I would sap the taste out of this dogs mouth if he tried to bite me. It's great to see a working breed work, but this is the wrong dog for protection. Maybe in sport and competition he does well, but as far as true protection, which schutzhund is not, hunting dogs should never be used.
@Knucklehead281 What's so wrong in using other dogs in schutzhund o_o If your dog has the drive for it, why not? I did schutzhund with my Siberian Husky and proved everyone wrong when they saw she was really good at it.
@gwenleblanc Here is the problem, your husky has almost double the bite pressure scientifically of labs and retrievers. I have seen many huskies in work actually, not my personal choice but they can do well, especially females. However, humans also have a higher bite on average than a lab or retriever, they were not bred to bite hard, in fact it is the contrary, they were bred to "retrieve" dead game and not puncture the flesh. Than there is the complete lack of drive to "naturally" defend.
@Knucklehead281 I don't see the problem there? Ive seen labradors and goldens do damage to people when they bite, as much as they drew blood. Yes, they were bred to retriever, however schutzhund is a sport, it is a GAME, Ive seen labs/Goldies/Chesapeake Bay retrievers do it without a problem, they aren't biting someone's arm, they are biting a sleeve. Hey, it's not natural for Siberian Huskies to work in schutzhund, they were bred to run, but heck, some do it. It's all about the individual dog
@gwenleblanc I basically said that earlier if you read my first comment. I said that because of their athletic ability they do well in sport work, I was pointing out that schutzhund is no longer the standard for protection, there are many impractical things in schutzhund work. This is where a true guardian breed and true working breed will beat a hunting dog every time.
@Knucklehead281 Well then why all this talk about labradors doing bad as protection dogs, since I was clearly talking about the schutzhund sport on my first comment. [my comment about a lab that drew blood was directed at the person who said they can't do damage.] I'm sorry if I didn't read comments you posted to other people, I was reading was you were responding to me.
@gwenleblanc Huskies are working breeds, and they have a more powerful bite. And yea a dog may have the drive but if they dont have the build it does no good!! Especially when someone's LIFE is on the line! For example my Pomeranian has a drive, he's fearless and up for a challenge, he even acts like a bite work dog around ppl he doesn't know, but the big problem is he's under 10 lbs if someone kicks him reguardless of his DRIVE, he'll be a dead dog or a seriously injured.
@nikigurl08 What? Who's LIFE is on the line o__O It's a freaking SPORT, a GAME. The dogs bite a SLEEVE. There's a HUGE difference between a labrador and a Pomeranian, if you haven't noticed.
@Knucklehead281 SO true!! That's what im sayin!! This dog doesn't have the agility or the strenght of a true working breed. Not to mention Labs are breed for soft mouths, so once the dog loses grips of the attacker it gonna get the crap beat outta of it! You gotta consider that!! I mean if someone feels really threaten do you really think their going to just lay there and take it!! That's why the dog gotta have a nasty bite!!
@nikigurl08 Very good point, however I would not say they do not have the agility, they are very athletic breeds and very agile, not on the level by any means of a dutch shepherd or malinois. And I agree I stand a much better chance at surviving a vicious lab attack, opposed to my friends 155 lb presa canario haha. If you people need to see a true working breed, search presa canario, or caucasian ovcharka, malinois, dutch shepherd, there are so many but these are solid breeds.
@Knucklehead281 Yes im familiar with all those breeds. But im from the states so their not a common dog to see workin in bite work, because there not AKC breeds and a lot of them have to be imported which means their gonna be VERY expensive!! But yes they are good in their line of work, but so are Dobermans, Shepherds, Rottweilers and Cane Corsos, and other bully breeds which are easier to get a hold of and not NEARLY as expensive.
@nikigurl08 Yes those breeds do fine, but you have to remember the reason those particular breeds, (excluding the cane corso) have found success mainly in protection sports. Now IMO there is a difference between a sport work dog and a protection dog, particularly personal protection. And as far as availability, there are very few if any quality working lines anymore in a lot of American bred dogs unfortunately. Overbreeding and the show ring have diminished much of the former glory of many dogs.
@Knucklehead281 Well that's why you buy a working line of dog and not a show or pet line dog. We got our Doberman from a breeder who breeds European Dobes with American Dobes. Now provided ours maybe only half if that European but the traits are pretty dominant in him. He's got the thicker frame, darker markings and he got a drive to protect. Now we got him as a pet and as a dog who would keep the house safe. I can only imagine a drive tho in 100% European Dobe tho or even a Rottie.
All of you who says Bozsó is not that good, come see him in 2010... I go to the same dogschool, and trust me he is damn good... I was amazed when first seen him.. and FYI he has won competitions... :)
@gregmarton Y would you use a lab tho? I mean their not breed to be bite dogs. And not only that, there not intimidating!! If you look at a lab your not like oh big scary lab!! And their bites suck for this type of work!! I can rip a tug of war toy right out of their mouth because their design to carry stuff! I mean that's great if he keep your house safe but he's not intimidating. And I personally would never invest my safety in a lab im stickin with Dobes and Rotties!
@Menarson Its not that hard, there design to have "Soft Mouths" their teeth arent as sharp, as the average dog so they cant sink their teeth into something. So your dog may have the drive but without the bite it doesnt matter! Besides Labs arent exactly intimidating!
thats really cool i never new that thanx i thought labs werent even guards but i didnt know they could be trained
